    Singaporeans In Ringgit Buying Spree

The Malaysian ringgit tumbled to a 12-year low in offshore markets yesterday, sending some Singaporeans into a buying frenzy.

One Central District money changer told The New Paper that his stock of RM300,000 (S$96,000) was sold out in four hours.

Emerging stock markets and their currencies have been hit by fears that once Mr Donald Trump assumes the US presidency, higher interest rates would spark capital outflows from this region.

At 10am yesterday, the ringgit was trading at 3.1504 per Singdollar according to currency conversion app XE Currency. The rate shown on the app is usually higher than what is offered at the money changers.

By noon, it was at 3.0351 at AR Money Exchange at Junction 8. By 2pm, it was between 3.035 and 3.05 at eight money changers at The Arcade in Collyer Quay.

Money changers there told TNP they saw a surge of customers buying ringgit yesterday .

Aksha Exchange opened its shutters at 10am and ran out of its stock of RM300,000 by 2pm.

Its owner said: “We didn’t expect to run out. So many people came to buy.

“One week ago, S$1 was RM3. Today, it is RM3.04.”

Since Mr Trump won in the Nov 8 election, the money changer has noticed a 30 per cent increase in the number of customers buying ringgit.

This was echoed by Arcade Plaza Traders’ administration manager, Mr Deen: “Forty to 50 per cent of our customers today bought ringgit. ”

Mr Trump’s pro-growth message in his acceptance speech had sent US stock markets and the US dollar soaring. (See report below.)

The president-elect even had a cordial midday meeting yesterday with US President Barack Obama that had a positive impact in the US. (See report below.)

But it was bad news for emerging markets, including Singapore.

Even in the queues, there were winners and losers.

Shop manager Niel Hoh, 28, who makes a trip to Malaysia every two months, saved more than $200.

    “I bought RM10,000 for S$3,278.69 today. Two weeks ago, I bought only RM1,500, S$1 was around RM2.90.”

But permanent resident David Wong, 55, who works in a Malaysia real estate firm, felt the pinch.

He sold RM20,000, and got about S$6,500 – about S$200 lower than what he would have got four weeks ago.

Money Changers Association Second vice-president Danny Yoong, 48, observed that ringgit-buying remained stable in the past few weeks.

Mr Yoong, who also owns Bon Voyage Money Changer, said: “But there are signs that the ringgit is weakening, and demand for ringgit may become high.

“There are also some customers who wait to see whether the ringgit rate will go down even further.”

He added that the Singdollar is not doing well against the US dollar, and sees a 10 per cent increase in people selling US dollar.

    ELECTION

“Before the election, Singdollar was trading at 1.38 to 1.39 per US dollar, but it became around 1.400 to 1.415 after the election,” said Mr Yoong.

At 8.56am, the Singdollar was trading at 1.4135 per US dollar – down 0.57 per cent from its close of 1.4054 the previous day.

Bank Negara Malaysia governor Muhammad Ibrahim sought to assure Malaysians that the ringgit’s fall is due to speculation among investors and not the country’s fundamentals.

But senior economist at Mizuho Singapore, Mr Vishnu Varathan, said the plummeting ringgit will have a short-term impact on the cost of living of Malaysians and Singapore.

He said: “We have many cross-border transactions and involvements. The ringgit also features heavily in Singapore’s basket of currencies, so the Singdollar will also be affected.”

The Singapore stock market continued its fall following Mr Trump’s victory.

After Wednesday’s knee-jerk losses, The Straits Times Index continued its downtrend and ended 19.49 points, or 0.69 per cent, lower to 2,814.6, taking the year-to-date performance to -2.36 per cent.

Security Guard Protected Muslim Couple As They Prayed In Stadium

Yesterday my husband and i attended a football game, it was Duhur time and we needed to pray. Finding a place to pray at a football stadium is tough, but we managed to find an empty corner. I was a bit nervous to pray because it wasn’t private at all, particularly in front of everyone, maybe i’m silly but i’m always paranoid i will get attacked while focused in prayer.

My husband started praying and i get approached by stadium security. I thought in my head, here comes this guy, he’s gonna escort me out and tell us we can’t do this here. I was wrong, he came up to me and said “i am going to stand here and guard you guys to make sure nobody gives you any problems, go ahead and pray.”

He allowed us to pray and stood in front guarding us to make sure we are safe. When i finished he came up to us shook our hands and told us to enjoy the game. SubahanAllah, an amazing experience i will never forget.

Yuna Tegas Kekal Di Amerika Di Sebalik Kebimbangan Tentang Sentimen Anti-Muslim

  • Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood: Advice For PAP – No Need For Presidential Grandstanding, Just Adopt Fair And Non-Discriminatory Policies

Mohamed Jufrie Mahmood: Advice For PAP – No Need For Presidential Grandstanding, Just Adopt Fair And Non-Discriminatory Policies

Now that the amendment to the constitution has been passed by parliament we Singaporeans, whether we like it or not, will have to brace ourselves with the inevitability of having an “elected” Malay President who in actuality is selected. And since the bar has been set so ridiculously high no other candidate except those from the establishment would qualify to stand.

Ironically the passing of the amendment coincides with the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States.
It is not hard to guess who the Malay candidate would be in view of the scacity of qualified Malays. My guess is it would be either Puan Halimah or Encik Zainal Abidin Rasheed. Should it be Encik Zainal, who would have become Speaker had he not lost the election in 2011, would he be as proud as Donald Trump who had fought a long and bruising battle before clinching the presidency?

Would Ebcik Zainal, assuming he is the candidate, be able to command the respect of all Singaporeans in a skewed system tailored and reserved for him?

Would the Malays be proud of him? It would also be a slap on his face if as a Malay Muslim president he cannot even get the government to allow Muslim women in uniformed groups to dorn the tudung and rid Singapore of all forms of discrimination against Malay Muslims.
We don’t yet know what the actual PAP agenda is for instituting this ridiculous move. We don’t need to have a Malay, Indian or Eurasion President to tell the world that we are a multi racial and not a Chinese country. People of the world are not stupid. Come to think of it why should we worry about this? Can it guilty conscience for mistreating the Malays? Is the PAP leadership trying to con and impress the Malay world. My advice is, just adopt the right policies which are fair and non discriminitory to the minorities. And stop padding up our population with large numbers of PRC aliens if you really are concerned about being mistaken as a Chinese state. Let our population grow naturally and bond as a united nation. Your logic in instituting this amendment cuts no ice. It sounds so hollow and nothing but a scam. No self respecting and dignified Malay would want to partake in the scam.

Should Donald Trump carry out his threat to bar Muslims from entering the US Singapore’s head of state cannot even visit the country.

Walid J. Abdullah: World Has To Deal With Failings Of American Democracy

Perhaps 2016 will teach us not to adopt a holier-than-thou approach towards those who disagree with us. Dismissing everyone who is a Trump supporter as a racist, xenophobic idiot evidently did not work out well.

Sure, there are racists and deplorables amongst them. But there were people with genuine concerns that were not addressed, and instead of having their sentiments understood, they were dismissed as racists. Of course they would turn to Trump afterwards!

The media especially has blood on its hands. In spite of not being a Trump fan, i found the media coverage – particularly by Huffington Post – to be absolutely disgusting. Clearly one-sided. If i were an undecided voter, the media coverage would push me towards Trump. I hope the liberal media is proud of itself now.

Trump has won. Whether we like it or not, those are the rules of the game. We have to deal with a President Trump.

Unless you’re the US government (democrat or republican). Then you don’t have to respect other people’s aspirations. Just dismiss them as Islamic fundamentalists and then engineer a coup.

For peasants like the rest of the world, we have to deal with the failings of American democracy.
