    Dear The Real Singapore,

    I took a video of a potential pedophile or gay pervert at Citylink Mall Toilet trying to catch young school boys or even working adults using the toilet. I work in the area and this is not the first time I saw this guy loitering around suspiciously in the toilet.

    Today when I was peeing in the urinal i quickly got ready my phone and turn it into video mode and quickly take the video of the pervert in action. I believe he is actually committing a crime by looking at other guys peeing or shitting in the toilet cubicle. He is staring at the next door cubicle for like a few mins the whole time ever since I entered the toilet.

    Even though he is a man in the man’s toilet i strongly believe it is still illegal. However, I do not want to make this incident very big because my job might be affected as I do not want my boss to know I am video-ing some other pervert in the toilet as it is still a very weird thing to do.

    Please keep my identity strictly confidential but I hope some action can be done against this pervert always lurking around in the men’s toilet at Citylink Mall.

    I know some of your readers might scold me why did I film another guy in the toilet but I believe sharing this video online is okay because Firstly, he is a adult and Secondly he is in the act of committing a crime. Even though it is not a serious crime such as molesting a girl or peeping at a girl he is still committing a crime even if it is a guy peeping on a guy. It infringes the privacy of others. Thirdly, I did not film any private part of the guy as I only want to capture his face in the act so as to use it as evidence to proof other people he is a pervert.

    SINGAPORE — A 25-year-old woman is on trial for attempting to murder her lover, a 22-year-old woman whom she allegedly stabbed twice in the chest after the accused’s pleas to patch up were rebuffed.

    On the first day of trial yesterday, the High Court heard that the couple had a tumultuous relationship and quarrelled frequently.

    Giselle Shi Jia Wei is alleged to have stabbed Ummul Qurratu ‘Ain binte Abdul on July 22, 2012, in a hotel room in Geylang.

    She later stabbed herself in the chest with a knife. The charge of attempted suicide was dismissed.

    Testifying yesterday, Ummul said the two were acquainted in 2010 before becoming romantically linked in July 2011.

    She later moved into Shi’s house without Shi’s parents’ knowledge.

    As a result of this, Ummul confined herself almost exclusively to their room.

    In May 2012, Shi’s mother found Ummul in the house and asked her to leave. The couple then moved to Malaysia and later returned to Singapore.

    Ummul told the court that Shi was possessive, calculative and insecure. The accused even restricted her career options and asked her to terminate her Facebook account.

    Ummul also testified that they would squabble over the use of toiletries and the smallest of things, such as financial issues, jealousy and over things that Ummul had said.

    On July 14, 2012, Ummul said Shi blew up inside a toilet cubicle at the Mink Club after a male friend hugged Ummul, causing her to spill her drink on Shi’s heels. Shi later said that she wanted to end the relationship, before boarding a taxi.

    At about 11pm on July 21, 2012, Ummul agreed to meet Shi for the last time at the latter’s request, believing that Shi wanted some closure.

    After supper, the couple headed to a hotel room in Geylang and engaged in “physical relations”.

    The next day at around 5pm, Shi repeatedly asked Ummul if they could start afresh while she watched television in bed.

    But Ummul rejected the idea because of their frequent fights and disagreements. Shi then said that she would be together with Ummul, whether in life or death.

    “She became more desperate and frustrated,” said Ummul.

    Shi later whipped out a knife from her handbag and pierced the knife into Ummul’s chest.

    Ummul put up a struggle and the knife was pulled out of her chest in the process before Shi stabbed her again.

    However, she managed to escape and sought help from a couple. Ummul was later conveyed to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment.

    The trial continues.

    The subject of universal human rights took a local turn at a university forum on Tuesday night, with two top lawyers disagreeing over whether an anti-gay sex law should be done away with.

    National University of Singapore (NUS) law don Walter Woon said he was in favour of repealing the law because of what he sees as a “constitutional problem”.

    The Government has said that the law will not be proactively enforced. But Prof Woon, a former attorney-general, cited Section 35(8) of the Constitution to make the point that the powers to prosecute lie with the Attorney-General.

    “So we have a very dangerous precedent here where the political authorities are saying to the Public Prosecutor – who is supposed to be independent – there are some laws that you don’t enforce,” he said at the 12th NUS Tembusu Forum attended by about 250 students.

    “I find that very uncomfortable,” he added.

    Section 377A makes it a crime for men to commit acts of gross indecency with other men, whether in private or public. It carries a jail term of up to two years. The law, enacted in 1938, has been in the spotlight in recent years following Parliament debates and constitutional challenges.

    Prof Woon said that homosexual sex was “absolutely impossible to prove” as a practical matter. He added: “As a matter of principle, if these are consenting adults, why should it carry a jail term?”

    While considered a sin by certain religions, it could be accorded similar treatment to adultery and fornication, which are not crimes under the law, he said, adding: “If it is a sin, it is between you and God.”

    NUS Centre for International Law chairman Tommy Koh agreed that the provision should in principle be done without, but said abolishing it was “not so simple” given potential political pushback.

    A majority of Singaporeans were against a repeal going by opinion polls, Prof Koh said.

    “The compromise is a law in the book, but Singapore will not enforce that law,” he said, adding that the Government’s difficulty in balancing opposing opinions “should not be underestimated”.

    The panel at the two-hour forum titled Are Human Rights Truly Universal? also included Ms Braema Mathi, president of human rights group Maruah, and Mr Bernhard Faustenhammer, who heads the political, press and information section of the European Union delegation to Singapore.

    They concurred that the idea of human rights is universal, but its application hinges on local contexts, such as culture and history.

    Ms Mathi cited the example of Brunei’s recent passing of the hudud law, an Islamic penal code that calls for death by stoning for adultery, which she said appears to contradict both regional and global human rights declarations.

    It is unsettling that there is ambiguity about the legality of surrogacy here, especially when surrogacy has been shown to have a negative impact on children. (“Greater clarity needed on legality of surrogacy in S’pore: Lawyers”; Aug 14)

    The Centre for Family Research at the University of Cambridge published a study last year, having followed 30 families who had used a surrogate, 31 who had used egg donation, 35 who had used donor sperm and 53 who had conceived naturally.

    It showed that surrogate children were more likely to suffer depression than those carried by their real mother.

    The professor who led the research said: “Signs of adjustment problems could be behaviour problems, such as aggressive or antisocial behaviour, or emotional problems, such as anxiety or depression.”

    Some people who were born from surrogacy arrangements have questioned the practice.

    For example, the blogger of The Other Side of Surrogacy wrote: “I’d love to see couples who are considering these methods to pause and ask themselves, is this really what’s in the best interest of a child?”

    To promote the best interests of children, Singapore should follow Thailand’s lead and pass laws to ban surrogacy.

    SINGAPORE: A 10-year-old boy who was sitting at the void deck and playing with his handphone was molested repeatedly despite pushing his perpetrator away.

    The perpetrator, Teo Koon Tian, 57, was sentenced to 20 months’ jail on Thursday (Aug 7). At about 4pm on July 18 this year, Teo purchased three cans of beer from a provision shop and was drinking at the void deck. As he was drinking, he spotted the boy, who cannot be named as he is a minor.

    Teo told the boy that he was “very cute and handsome” and touched him on the cheeks. However, the boy ignored Teo and continued to play with his handphone. Teo then walked around the void deck and touched the boy’s cheeks again, and the boy once again ignored him.

    Subsequently, Teo sat behind the boy and used his right hand and patted and rubbed the boy’s left thigh. Though the boy immediately pushed his hand away, Teo continued to use his right hand to touch the boy’s thigh, proceeding higher up the thigh. The boy was very scared when Teo touched him, the court heard. The boy continued to push Teo’s hand away, after which Teo walked away.

    The boy then immediately went back home and told his elder sister about the incident. They went down to look for Teo but could not find him. They later called their mother and filed a police report that night.

    During the hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Joshua Lim argued that the offence was committed in broad daylight and the boy was “simply trusting in the safety and security of his own housing estate”.

    “In no uncertain terms, he (Teo) has to be told that he has to pay for his crimes against innocent, vulnerable, defenceless young boys,” said Mr Lim.

    He also urged the court to send the message that the criminal justice system will “come down hard” on child molesters who commit such offences. “You will be appropriately censured, castigated and dealt with,” added Mr Lim.
