    History of Halloween

    Saints

The Roman Catholics typically celebrate the anniversaries of their saints. Saints who have been officially recognised by the Church are people who are considered purified or holy and is therefore believed to be in Heaven.

According to their beliefs, the worship of saints is a show of devotion so that they can be asked to intercede or pray for those still on earth.

    Calendar of Saints

Early Christians commemorated the day of the death of their Saints by having an annual feast. The number of recognized Saints increased until eventually every day of the year had at least one saint who was commemorated.

To deal with this increase, some dates were moved while others were completely removed from the calendar. These Feast Days were also ranked in order of importance of the respective Saints where some commemorative feasts became obligatory while others remained optional.

    All-Saints’ Day

With the huge deluge of Saints, a day was selected to commemorate all the Saints (the remainders who were not afforded a day to call their own) in a single swoop. This day was named All-Saints’ Day and falls on the 1st of November.

All-Saints’ Day was also known as All Hallows’ Day (“Hallow” means “Saint”) and is considered a Holy Day of Obligation for the Roman Catholics.

    Halloween

The term Halloween was derived from “Hallows’ Eve” which is the eve of All Saints’ Day (All Hallows’ Day).

The celebration was basically adopted from Pagan rituals called “Festival of the Dead” when it is believed that the border between this world and the other world becomes passable to spirits of the dead.

    Haul Commemorations in Islam

Similarly, there has never been remembrances of death anniversaries (haul) in Islam. If there were, the death anniversaries of Prophet Muhammad & his Companions would have been of utmost importance.

However, following in the footsteps of the Shi’ites who commemorate the death anniversary of Hussayn among others, many amongst Sufis have adopted the Pagan ritual to commemorate the death anniversaries of their own revered shaykhs whom they glorify and consider infallible.

May Allah give us His Taufeeq and Hidayah so that we may be among those who seek knowledge to ascertain the truth.

  • Unfair NTUC Put Halloween Decoration But Not Deepavali

Unfair NTUC Put Halloween Decoration But Not Deepavali

    A reader shared this post.

“I am clearly disappointed at the sight of a Halloween decoration taking precedence over the Deepavali displays at your Sportshub branch.

May I humbly know when did a commercial celebration that’s not even been recognised as a public holiday in Singapore has become a festivity that overshadows our Ethnic & Cultural importance in Singapore? Is this how you advocate racial respect & harmony of Singapore to visitors & residents in our country?

I’m extremely disheartened that a country that’s hailed for it’s diverse races, in the recent years has become a more greedy commercial hub with focus on main ethnic groups and forgetting the minorities.

Do you know what’s the meaning of Deepavali & Halloween? Deepavali’s not a new year as widely misinterpreted. It’s a Festival of Lights (bringing in joy, happiness & peace to our family) whereas Halloween is dedicated to remembering the dead. Even the meaning of Halloween has been lost over the years & it’s being celebrated as a day to invoke fun, fear & tricks.

Fairprice is a well known local groceries merchant with multiple branches throughout Singapore. Being part of the National Trade Union Congress I’m ashamed to say you have failed to show unity in our National Celebration. I’ve always been proud of my country & always will be. Therefore I hope you will also learn to take pride in giving equal importance to all ethnic celebrations. I hope our Citizen’s pledge is not only remembered by it words but by it’s meaning.

Insensitive MH370 Halloween Costume Causes Furore

PETALING JAYA (The Star/Asia News Network) – Insensitive, rude and heartless. These are just some of the remarks expressed by Malaysians shocked at seeing “bloodied MH370 costumes” of Halloween party-goers on the internet.

“Morons. Jerks. What the hell are they thinking?” said Aishah Khumaira who could not contain her disgust for their costume choices.

“I wish I could throw a grenade to them. I’m bursting out like crazy because of these idiots. Do they even know the word ‘respect’? Bloody non-educated people!”

Chris Sim condemned the revellers for demonstrating “zero respect” for passengers and crew of MH370, as their families are still yearning and longing for their return.

A search for #flightmh370 on Instagram and Twitter by The Star Online on Sunday, showed at least six individuals who made Halloween costumes related to the tragedy.

One of them, Instagram user nystone01, had uploaded a picture of three zombie-like individuals in cheongsams, while showing off their cabin crew identification cards, bearing the Malaysia Airlines logo.

The picture was accompanied with a hashtags such as ‘something wrong’, ‘Malaysianairlines’, and ‘flightmh370’.

Arif Sharimie said it reflected “a low class mentality”, and “the the two most common elements in the universe are “hydrogen and stupidity”.

Australian National University student Michael Loo said his institution’s newspaper also came up with the poor idea: “How bloody inconsiderate.”

Hilmiah Ahmad said their actions did not consider the feelings of families affected by the tragedy.

“Shame on them. Guess it never occur to them that similar tragedies could happen to members of their family too,” she added.

To Nicholas Lin, the insensitive actions stemmed from a lack of empathy with Malaysians and other nationalities affected by the mysterious disappearance of Flight MH370 on March 8.

“Because its nothing to do with their country. Try making fun of 9/11 and see how they react?” he added, suggesting that no national tragedy should be made light of.
