  • Is Government Providing Fair Subsidy To Local And Foreign Stallholders?

Is Government Providing Fair Subsidy To Local And Foreign Stallholders?

I went to this stall because of their signboard.

As I asked about the subsidy as shown, I receive the following reply.

The stall owner Aunty raised her tone at me with her angry pointed-up eyebrows, which look like an angry bird in red.

I asked about the written subsidy meal.. She shout :’ Government help one, I am private. Different, u dun understand??!!’

I told her :’ Your attitude is bad, I do not want to order your food.’

I walk to another economic stall. The boss explained, I am not the 1st person to feedback on her bad attitude. He explained, the boss of the stall is a PRC lady. She receives 5k subsidy assistance per month.

    Isn’t this a 100% profitting business?

Why is so much help cater to prc, but how about local hawker entrepreneurs?

We have to go through approval n approval and check n checks.

I kinda felt the unfairness to other hawker entrepreneurs whom just start out their noble hawker business.

To start a hawker stall, a $30k to 40k is needed. His stall rental is 1.7k per month.

My outcoming stall rental is 1.8k.

Is a hawker entrepreneur life easy?

How many plates of rice do we need to sell to cover the basic cost price. The long working hours too.

My morning is indeed a memorable one.

    Regards,
    Aunty Pan

  • Daughter Of Uncle Abused At Hawker Centre – Self-Entitled Brats Will Get What They Deserve

Daughter Of Uncle Abused At Hawker Centre – Self-Entitled Brats Will Get What They Deserve

Today, no words can express my outrage and disgust to learn of an incident that happened to my dad. The incident took place on 21st April (this past Fri night) and I only got to know of it through several online postings and after watching the video. (For my peeps on the other side of the globe, you can read about it in the link I’ve posted below. Now that it has gone viral, even YouTube has the video..oh geez…ikr.. it’s pretty shameful but it happens….)

What I find unbelievable is for the entire 2 days, my dad never for once mentioned a word of it. When I ask him why hasn’t he made it known to us? Why hasn’t he made a report? In his own words, he tells me he didn’t think anything will come out of it, will the police even act on it? ..does it make sense to pursue it?.. Furthermore, will anyone even going to believe him? It will be just his words …So what can he do? He figured he will have to just brush it off, and move on..so no point mentioning……I was stumped for a moment, only then it dawned on me that there are folks out there, like my dad, who fell victims to similar unruly behaviors, and yet do not think they have a voice or view that any appropriate action will be taken for all it’s worth… what my dad didn’t know (since he is not exactly the most tech savy person) is the whole incident was captured and recorded on video…over the course of 2 days, multiple eye witnesses have stepped forward and filed police reports …and for that, I am forever grateful to Manny who posted the video and the ones who brought to light of this incident and also for those (like Janice ,Trish and the netizens) who righteously have the courage to stand up, to speak up, and to take action against the bullying.

Our hawker and food centres are public places. Seatings are first come first serve basis. While I understand it’s common practice for many of us (including myself) to leave an artifact to reserve seats while queuing for food, since when does this equate to entitlement or ownership of these public items? To get in depth with Singapore’s infamous “chope seat” system will require a whole separate discussion, which I am not about to get into here ….Bottom line is (doesn’t matter who is there first) , my dad only wanted to share the table, there were only 2 of them (the couple) and their food wasn’t even ready….Will it kill them just to share the seats??! I mean ..seriously??!! Not only the woman was uncouth with her hurling of abusive profanities, her companion just had to despicably ram my dad from behind, trying to knock him off his feet!

Last but not least, thank you all for the heart warming support, the vigilantes who keep a watchful eye on the wrongdoings, and took care to lookout for those who are vulnerable. The culprits are still Scot free. If any of you can kindly identify them or have someone in mind, (please NO cyber posting of names or bullying). .. just notify the police at 1800 -255 -0000 at your own discretion…the police will verify the identities of the culprits first in any case, so that we don’t falsely accuse the innocents.

to the ugly couple who did this to my dad, you know who you are..what goes around comes around.. even if we don’t find you.. God sees everything.

  • Filipina Scolds Woman Who Questioned Her For Having ‘Singapore’ Emblazoned In Shorts

Filipina Scolds Woman Who Questioned Her For Having ‘Singapore’ Emblazoned In Shorts

A reader sent us a video of a commotion in a hawker centre. According to the reader the woman, a Singaporean, questioned the Filipina about why she had ‘Singapore’ emblazoned in the back of her shorts. The Filipina who got upset with the woman’s question went ballistic with her attracting many onlookers.

According to the reader, the woman is a maid who had engaged in a game of weekend netball before the incident.

Do you think the word ‘Singapore’ should be better respected?

  • Singaporeans Support Petition To Retain Sungei Road Flea Market

Singaporeans Support Petition To Retain Sungei Road Flea Market

The Sungei Road flea market’s last day of operation is on July 10 but the hawkers are hoping to be given an alternative or temporary site that will allow them to continue their business.

On Thursday (Feb 23), Mr Koh Ah Koon, 76, the president of the Association for the Recycling of Second Hand Goods, unfurled a banner at Sungei Road calling for the site to be conserved.

Speaking to The Straits Times later, Mr Koh said he was saddened but hopes an alternative site can be allocated for the hawkers.

“We don’t need a permanent location and can move. We hope the government can give us a temporary site so that our lifestyle and this aspect of local heritage can be retained.”

He said he has printed 10 banners and plans to collect signatures till July to support calls for the site to be “conserved” or retained. By 7pm on Feb 23, he had collected about 200 signatures.

The Government said the free hawking zone has to make way for future residential developments in a multi-agency statement last Tuesday.

Mr Koh’s association, which represents about 70 of 200 vendors at the flea market, had previously proposed four alternative sites – next to Rochor River, at Kampong Bugis along Kallang River, behind Sim Lim Tower and a roadside near Jalan Kubor Malay cemetery.

But the authorities said the four sites had been zoned for parks and residential use under Master Plan 2014.

After the Government announcement, the association submitted a fresh appeal to extend the deadline until the end of the year. If that fails, it hopes to secure a temporary site in Jalan Besar behind a hawker centre.

Mr Kalay V., 45, a businessman who signed the petition said: “This provides the elderly hawkers a legitimate source of income and can be seen as an engagement programme for seniors – not that different from those run by community centres.”

  • “Educated” Man Mocks Hawker’s Low Education, Threatens To Fake Report To NEA, In Front Of Own Children

“Educated” Man Mocks Hawker’s Low Education, Threatens To Fake Report To NEA, In Front Of Own Children

Dear family, friends and teachers. How many of you feel that our society is getting colder and colder? I used to think that it wasn’t until today. Today when I was helping my parents to tend their business around 1930 hrs, this guy’s daughter took my parent’s stall utensils without seeking for permission and of course without purchases any food from us. Naturally my mother told the girl to return the utensils after returning, the girl cried and guess what did the guy said to her? “It’s alright, I will cause trouble for this stall and tell NEA there were cockroaches in the stall”

I can’t believe this! A father of 2 children actually taught his daughter that this is the right thing to do.

Of course my father wasn’t happy and he yelled at him as to us we did not even have roaches in our stall. He then took a picture of my parent’s stall then said he will definitely report us. My father instructed me to do the same thing and thus the pictures. Another thing was that, he said it was fine if we report him as he isn’t doing business like us. To me so what if he actually had more education compared to my parents? Does he thinks that my parent’s can’t understand english? and lastly just because my parents are fighting under the heat to support a family whereas he is working in a air-condition environment? Is he looking down on hawker workers? I would wish to express my thoughts to this “xia suay” man.

My answer: I know you are more educated but who are you to insult people who work in hawker center? They earn money decently. I am speaking up on behalf of all hawker workers and not only my parents. Just because you might earn more money then them just because you are more educated, you still have no rights to insult them. Where have your education gone to? You think you are the only one who can speak english is it? and if you think that you are rich why get your food at hawker center? Why don’t you want to dine in in some restaurant? You know what? Because people like you, this society is getting way colder and I am really ashamed for you because of the way you teach your child. I am really disgusted.

My dear family, teachers and friends do share about this as I really hate it when people look down on hawker workers and people who is as “xia suay” as him.
