    Ustazah Syifaa Mansor, pioneer batch alumni Irsyad under principalship of Sohibusamaha Dr Ustaz Fatris. Ustazah graduated from Al Azhar University with double degree and master from UK university. As a Research Assistant, she vets NIE students’ thesis.

    Wow ! She has license to fly a private airplane, and license to drive a speed boat. Most important, she is very humble, always achored to her strong values.

    Alhamdullillah, I had great pleasure and honor to be seated as panelist with this dynamic Khalifah fil ard at Warna 98.7 FM, Edisi PSLE at Orchard Hotel yesterday.

    Ironic That Hijab Is An Issue For Parents At Montessori School

    I refer to the report “Employers should list dress code policies clearly, says TAFEP” (Feb 26). It points to a shocking social reality.

    The notion that some parents might feel uncomfortable about women wearing the hijab handling their children is ironic. Parents pay top dollar to enrol their children in Montessori schools so that they, among other outcomes, are groomed with sound social skills. However, such a curriculum can evidently fail to impart tolerance, apparently because of parents themselves.

    Preserving a tolerant society is not the sole responsibility of the Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices, the Government, nor schools. We want various institutions to encourage tolerance towards issues that can potentially divide us, but as Dr Maria Montessori put it, “the child builds his inmost self out of the deeply held impressions he receives”. Home is where most of these impressions are unconsciously imitated then internalised.

    We must realise it is imperative to prepare children to face uncomfortable circumstances, especially those at conflict with deeply rooted beliefs. Parents should strive to make every moment a “teachable moment”. That way, we nurture a generation that seeks the greater good in the face of adversity, instead of avoiding it.

    As Dr Montessori said: “Preventing conflicts is the work of politics; establishing peace is the work of education.”

    Madonna’s much-hyped Rebel Heart concert at the National Stadium tomorrow night could be remembered as the hottest gig of the year, or as the most contentious, depending on how you see it.

    The most recent flap: the statements from the Roman Catholic Church here and the National Council of Churches of Singapore, urging believers to reconsider attending the show and not to support those who “denigrate and insult religion”.

    We look back at all the times the 57-year-old US pop icon caused a commotion in her three-decade career.

    WHEN MDNA concert tour (2012)

    WHAT During a video collage for the song Nobody Knows Me, the face of Marine Le Pen, a French far-right politician and leader of French party National Front, appeared on screen with a swastika superimposed on her forehead.

    WHO Le Pen and National Front party members, who threatened to sue Madonna if she went ahead to use the image in her concert in Nice, France. Madonna subsequently removed the swastika from the video and replaced it with a question mark.

    WHEN Girl Gone Wild video (2012)

    WHAT The raunchy black-and-white clip contained scenes of grinding, naked men in stiletto heels, same-sex kisses, an implied orgy and Madonna in a bondage suit.

    WHO YouTube viewers who rated it as “inappropriate”. The video-sharing site then slapped it with an age restriction, allowing only those aged 18 or older to watch it. Madonna was also blocked from uploading the video onto her Vevo account.

    WHEN Coachella Music Festival (2015)

    WHAT She locked lips with a stunned Canadian rapper, Drake, for a good three seconds on stage during the latter’s headlining set. At the 29-year-old’s invitation, she made a cameo appearance when he performed one of his songs titled Madonna.

    WHO Likely Drake himself, who – rather amusingly – appeared repulsed and horrified after the intense snog. And probably Drake’s fans too, who created a slew of hilarious memes mocking “grandmother” Madonna for “sucking the life force” out of their idol.

    The management of Encik Tan have contacted us and issued this reply to give their account of the events that took place that day.

    It appears that your complain of poor service relates to the incorrect amount of money change given to your husband and the “purported” charging of replacement drinks.
    We have looked into the matter and have also verified the incident with the staff in question. We actually have a rather different account of the incident which can be backed up by CCTV footage.
    We have attempted to contact you for a meeting to clarify the actual details of the incident but to no avail
    We sincerely hope you can get in touch with us to set up such a meeting.
    You have also alleged that the staff in question may be a Chinese woman wearing a tudung for the sake of halal certification.
    We would like to put on record that the staff is a Chinese muslim (as verified from her identity document).
    Further, MUIS will issue Halal Certication to a food and beverage outlet based on a set of strict Criteria set out by MUIS and not in the matter you have alleged.
    We are also prepared to arrange for a consultant from the Halal certification to be present at the Meeting to clarify the matter as we have build a strong bonding with our Muslim community all these years . We do not allow accusations of any form to damage our good standing.
    We look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible as we would like to amicably resolve the matter and clear up all the misunderstandings

    Majlis Bahasa Melayu Singapura Gunakan Teras 4M, Mantapkan Penggunaan Bahasa Melayu

    Majlis Bahasa Melayu Singapura (MBMS) akan terus melanjutkan usaha untuk memantapkan lagi penggunaan Bahasa Melayu di negara ini melalui teras 4M – Memangkin, Menghubung, Memperkukuh dan Memperdalam.

    Demikian ditekankan Pengerusi barunya, Profesor Madya Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim yang juga Setiausaha Parlimen Pendidikan merangkap Pembangunan Sosial dan Keluarga dalam sidang media MBMS, petang tadi (24 Feb).

    Tahun ini, ketua-ketua baru juga dilantik bagi tiga jawatankuasa kecil MBMS.

    Jumlah penyertaan dalam pelbagai kegiatan Bahasa Melayu saban tahun, semakin menggalakkan. Lanjutan daripada usaha-usaha sedia ada, MBMS mahu meluaskan lagi pendekatannya menerusi empat teras, iaitu:

    EMPAT TERAS

    1) ‘Memangkinkan’ kegiatan-kegiatan bahasa, sastera dan budaya dengan kerjasama badan-badan Melayu, agensi-agensi pemerintah, institusi dan individu

    2) ‘Menghubungkan’ orang ramai dengan kegiatan Bahasa Melayu melalui pelbagai wadah termasuk media sosial

    3) ‘Memperkukuh’ usaha untuk mengenal pasti aktivitis muda yang berpotensi menjadi pelapis bahasa, sastera dan budaya Melayu,

    4) Menyediakan wadah untuk orang ramai ‘Memperdalam’ minat terhadap bahasa, sastera dan budaya Melayu.

    Dr Faishal berkata: “Saya melihat MBMS sebagai penghubung di mana dengan adanya landasan ini, kita boleh menjadi penghubung untuk memberikan maklumat dari platform Facebook, Instagram dan lelaman MBMS.

    “Kami juga akan meningkatkan tahap dan mengemaskini lelaman MBMS supaya ia mesra dengan pengguna telefon bimbit. Ini dijadualkan siap pada Julai tahun ini.”

    JAWATANKUASA KECIL MBMS

    Duta Bahasa 2010, Cik Rahayu Mahzam yang juga Anggota Parlimen GRC Jurong, adalah di kalangan tiga orang yang dilantik untuk menerajui tiga jawatankuasa kecil.

    Cik Rahayu, Ketua Jawatankuasa Masyarakat dan Bulan Bahasa, berkata: “Kita gunakan Bulan Bahasa sebagai satu wahana untuk melibatkan segenap masyarakat pengguna Bahasa Melayu.

    “Jadi, ini harus dipertingkatkan dalam konteks kehidupan masa kini kerana masyarakat sering berubah. Ada beberapa inovasi dan teknologi yang berubah. Ini bermakna mungkin kosa kata kita perlu berubah, perlu ditambah.”

    GALAK KREATIVITI, PERKEMBANGAN BAHASA

    Selain untuk menyuntik kesegaran kepada Bulan Bahasa tahun ini, tiga jawatankuasa kecil MBMS juga akan memberi tumpuan kepada penggalakkan kreativiti dan perkembangan bahasa, meningkatkan mutu program dan bersifat lebih inklusif agar keindahan bahasa dapat lebih dihargai.

    Antara kegiatan baru yang akan dianjurkan termasuk Bengkel Kritikan Sastera dan Bengkel Rentas Media.

    Dua lagi ketua jawatankuasa kecil ialah Profesor Madya Dr Hadijah Rahmat dan Pengetua Sekolah Menengah Balestier Hill, Encik Abdul Harris Sumardi.

    Sesi taklimat Bulan Bahasa akan diadakan pada Jumaat ini.
