Halimah Yacob Has Word Of Advice For NDP Bird Boy

The precocious Henry Park Primary School Pupil who made headlines for raising his middle finger at the camera during the National Day Parade on Wednesday has not only attracted the attention of netizens but has earned some advice from presidential hopeful Halimah Yacob, as well.

Halimah – who has been dominating headlines herself after resigning from her elected MP role and from her seat as Speaker of Parliament to contest the reserved presidential election that has been mired in controversy – had this to say to the boy’s parents when she was asked about the boy in an interview with a local news website:

“I have a word of advice for his parents, if I could.
“I’m also a mother, I’m a mother. Maybe should just call aside the boy and tell him this is not the right thing to do, and explain to him!
“I think that would be the ideal. The parents would come in, counsel him, and say “look this is not the right thing to do” and why. You need to explain why, you know.
“I always feel that instilling values in young people is a job for parents. Because they are born, and the day they were born, they were with us. We have a duty to instill values in them, you see.
“And so I think, that’s what the parents should do.”

The establishment favourite hopeful also had the following words of wisdom for the boy himself:

“You made a mistake, learn from it, and move on.”

The boy is reportedly “deeply apologetic” for his actions, according to Henry Park Primary School’s principal who also told a local daily that the boy has been counselled.

  • Project Chulia Street Reminds Us That National Day Is Also About Caring For Migrants Who Help Built Singapore

Project Chulia Street Reminds Us That National Day Is Also About Caring For Migrants Who Help Built Singapore

Sometimes all it takes is a little child to say it like it is.

“I think my butterfly is very beautiful. And I think the uncles will like it.”

“The uncles worked very hard to build Changi Airport. And I want to say thank you.”

“Thank you uncle for the hard work!”

These children were part of a Project Chulia Street event for migrant workers at Westlite Woodlands dormitory. The children created gift bags, while the other members organised a carnival for the workers.

“A lot of what we have today was not built by Singaporeans alone. It was through these migrant workers, toiling under the hot sun. That’s why when we celebrate our nation building they should be part of this.”

    – Eva Lim Sng, co-founder of Project Chulia Street.

Amidst the terrible stories we hear of migrant worker abuse or mistreatment, this initiative by Project Chulia Street reminds us that a celebration of Singapore is not complete without the workers who build it.

Watch the video on Project Chulia Street’s initiative, produced by the Singapore Kindness Movement here.

By the way, Project Chulia Street derived its name from Chulia Street, which was home to the earliest immigrants from Southern India known by the name Chulia. That’s a bit of history for you!

  • Tamil Translation Errors On NDP Pamphlets Were Made By Printers: Ng Eng Hen

Tamil Translation Errors On NDP Pamphlets Were Made By Printers: Ng Eng Hen

The erroneous Tamil translations of this year’s National Day Parade theme that were found on some National Day Parade (NDP) publicity pamphlets were made by the printers of the pamphlets, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said in a written Parliamentary reply on Tuesday (Aug 1).

The Tamil version of this year’s slogan, #OneNationTogether, saw a number of characters switched around, and others missing.

Dr Ng said the original Tamil translation submitted to the printers had been correct, but the errors came about as the pamphlets were not proofread after they were printed.

The incident came to light last month after pamphlets with the incorrect translation were distributed to Primary 5 students attending the National Education shows.

Dr Ng added that printed pamphlets will now be proofread, and that the step has been “incorporated as standard procedure for all translated texts in NDP distribution”.

He added that the NDP executive committee will ensure that the publishing companies it engages in future are equipped with reliable computer software, so the different languages used will be printed accurately.

The NDP executive committee apologised on Jul 11 for the error.

“Such typographical errors are avoidable and should not have happened. We apologise to all Singaporeans for our oversight, in particular to our Tamil community, for the unhappiness this error has caused,” said committee chairman Colonel Ong Yoke Lam Melvin.

The apology follows one by Speak Mandarin Campaign organisers, after the wrong Chinese character was used in its tagline at the campaign’s launch.

  • NDP Ticket Applications Open Next Tuesday

NDP Ticket Applications Open Next Tuesday

Ticket applications for this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) will open from next Tuesday (May 23) to Jun 4, the parade’s organising committee said on Thursday.

Singapore citizens and permanent residents can apply for tickets to the two preview shows on Jul 22 and Jul 29, or the NDP on Aug 9.

They can choose to apply for two, four or six tickets, although applicants should note that the lower the number of tickets applied for, the higher the chances of obtaining them, the news release said.

Successful applicants will be notified from Jun 26 to Jul 3 via the contact number provided in the application. They can collect their tickets from Jul 7 to 9 and Jul 14 to 16, between 10am and 9pm, at the National Gallery Singapore.

Those interested to ballot for tickets can do so via SMS, online, or at SAM and AXS stations.

For SMS, applicants may send a message to 8240 0050 with the format: <NRIC No> SPACE <Preview1/Preview2/NDP> SPACE <No of Tickets>

Each person is limited to one application, regardless of the mode used to apply. Tickets will be allocated via an electronic ballot, and not on a first-come-first-served basis. The balloting results are final and there will be no appeals, the committee said.

Each ticket admits one spectator to the parade, so children – inclusive of infants – must hold a valid ticket to be admitted to the parade.

Successful applicants to last year’s exercise will not be eligible for tickets to NDP this year.

This year’s parade will be the first at the Marina Bay Floating Platform since 2014. The parade’s theme, #OneNationTogether, as well as its theme song and logo were unveiled on Wednesday.
