Sex blogger Alvin Tan has landed himself in hot water again following yet another sedition probe against him for postings on his Facebook page where he had also superimposed pig snouts on the faces of several Malaysian leaders, including the prime minister.

Astro Awani reported that police have launched an investigation against Tan, who had skipped bail and fled to the United States to seek asylum.

Tan had previously been charged along with his former partner Vivian Lee under the same Act for an offensive and controversial Ramadan greeting the couple had put up on Facebook in July last year.

“Members of the public have lodged reports against Alvin Tan. Upon this, we initiated an investigation under the Sedition Act,” deputy federal CID chief Datuk Amar Singh was quoted as saying.

In a Facebook posting on September 26, Tan had slammed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, calling the latter a “coward” for the recent sedition dragnet which he called an effort to “cling on to the top post”.

He had also superimposed pig snouts on the images of Najib, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

In a show of defiance, Tan also tagged the five, telling their supporters to not bother alerting them of the “sedition” nature of the posting.

“Come jail me, please!!! Don’t bother tagging your leaders here just to alert them of “sedition” happening over here. I’ve done it beforehand to save you the hassle,” the posting read.

He had also likened Khalid, the nation’s top cop to Germany’s SS chief Heinrich Himmler, who was responsible for building Nazi concentration camps and had directed the killing of some millions of Jews during the Second World War.

“Yes, Khalid Abu Bakar, you’re like the Nazi SS Commander Heinrich Himmler, no less, and let me tell you why: because you abused your power just because someone called you names you didn’t like. You’re a bully, a coward.”

“Zahid Hamidi, you’re the closest thing to true evil, and your day will come. I promise. There will be no mercy (tip: google ‘Qaddafi’),” he said.

Khalid had earlier vowed to go all out to look for Alvin despite the fact that he was in the US, promising to search every “worm hole” for the 26-year-old fugitive.

Tan, the IGP said, was rude and could not be forgiven because he had shamed some Malaysian leaders with his offensive pictures and status posts on his Facebook account.

“He thinks he can run. But every country has its own regulations and we will not give up looking for him,” Khalid was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

The former law student at the National University of Singapore, and his then partner Vivian Lee, first came under the spotlight after uploading raunchy sex postings on their blog in 2012.

But it was their bak kut teh posting during Ramadan last year that landed them in hot water, and even in jail briefly – after they were charged under the Sedition Act and the Film Censorship Act.

Tan violated his bail conditions while on a supposed working trip to Singapore and is now on Interpol’s wanted list.

After lying low for a while, he recently emerged on social media to make known his plans for asylum in the US and is believed to be in Los Angeles, California.

Tan told The Malaysian Insider recently that his decision to flee his homeland was to escape the government’s “tyranny” as well as the “ignorance” of ordinary Malaysians.

Top Lawyers Disagreeing Over Gay Sex Law

The subject of universal human rights took a local turn at a university forum on Tuesday night, with two top lawyers disagreeing over whether an anti-gay sex law should be done away with.

National University of Singapore (NUS) law don Walter Woon said he was in favour of repealing the law because of what he sees as a “constitutional problem”.

The Government has said that the law will not be proactively enforced. But Prof Woon, a former attorney-general, cited Section 35(8) of the Constitution to make the point that the powers to prosecute lie with the Attorney-General.

“So we have a very dangerous precedent here where the political authorities are saying to the Public Prosecutor – who is supposed to be independent – there are some laws that you don’t enforce,” he said at the 12th NUS Tembusu Forum attended by about 250 students.

“I find that very uncomfortable,” he added.

Section 377A makes it a crime for men to commit acts of gross indecency with other men, whether in private or public. It carries a jail term of up to two years. The law, enacted in 1938, has been in the spotlight in recent years following Parliament debates and constitutional challenges.

Prof Woon said that homosexual sex was “absolutely impossible to prove” as a practical matter. He added: “As a matter of principle, if these are consenting adults, why should it carry a jail term?”

While considered a sin by certain religions, it could be accorded similar treatment to adultery and fornication, which are not crimes under the law, he said, adding: “If it is a sin, it is between you and God.”

NUS Centre for International Law chairman Tommy Koh agreed that the provision should in principle be done without, but said abolishing it was “not so simple” given potential political pushback.

A majority of Singaporeans were against a repeal going by opinion polls, Prof Koh said.

“The compromise is a law in the book, but Singapore will not enforce that law,” he said, adding that the Government’s difficulty in balancing opposing opinions “should not be underestimated”.

The panel at the two-hour forum titled Are Human Rights Truly Universal? also included Ms Braema Mathi, president of human rights group Maruah, and Mr Bernhard Faustenhammer, who heads the political, press and information section of the European Union delegation to Singapore.

They concurred that the idea of human rights is universal, but its application hinges on local contexts, such as culture and history.

Ms Mathi cited the example of Brunei’s recent passing of the hudud law, an Islamic penal code that calls for death by stoning for adultery, which she said appears to contradict both regional and global human rights declarations.

Non-degree Holders Can Have Successful Career and Become Senior Management

SINGAPORE: Human resource practitioners say non-degree holders can have a successful career and a shot at senior management positions if they continue to upgrade themselves. The Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI) observed in particular that local companies are more open-minded about hiring workers without a degree compared to global firms.

In his National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong cited Keppel Offshore & Marine as an example of a company that values workers and helps them develop skills to advance in their careers, whether they have a degree or not.

Said SHRI President Mr Erman Tan: “Local bosses are more open-minded. Part of the reason for that is they face the challenge of recruiting talent and they are more open-minded in the sense that they believe on-the-job training, they believe in grooming them. From there, they build bonding with the employee and the employee would typically grow with the organisation. Local SMEs also believe in long-term relationships. They see that on-the-job training and job performance count more than paper qualifications.”

SHRI says employers also look for other important attributes like relevant experience, a proven track record, people skills and leadership qualities, as well as the individual’s ability to work in a team. The institute notes that global MNCs may not be as flexible because they could be tied to a more prescribed global HR policy.

“I think a lot employers still use paper qualifications as a filtering process,” said Mr Tan. “Typically the employer tends to give those with a degree priority. Part of the reason is because in the selection process they have to filter out some candidates, and one of the more convenient ways to filter out people is to base selection on qualifications. Unfortunately that is still the practice at this moment.”

However, there are some positions that require a degree. HR consultancy Robert Walters cites certain roles within the finance industry as an example, but says there are opportunities for non-degree-holders to take on jobs at the more operational level.

Said Joanne Chua, Associate Director, HR, Business Support, Robert Walters: “Steps must be taken along the way where training and development is being provided by the organisation, whether internally and externally, to up-skill the capabilities of these individuals. Because they may be technically savvy in a particular area, such as fixing of aero turbines, but when the individual is expected to step up to take on a managerial or leadership role, then that’s where the up-skilling of qualifications would be required.”

    EDITOR’S NOTE

Steady lah Jannah Jakasha and Perutusan Asia for speaking up!

For a non-Muslim/non-Malay who can’t even speak like a native, we find it rather strange that a motivational speaker like Adam Khoo have the guts to write on a topic that we doubt he is familiar at all.

We have seen this many times where non-Malays and non-Muslims, speak of our communities and cultures like as though they are living it.

Studying our culture, religion, language, or even staying in a Malay or Muslim country doesn’t make you (non-Malay/non-Muslim) an expert in our cultures, languages, religion, and race. Those experiences just makes you have a better understanding of the intricacies. Makes you wiser.

So for now, don’t pandai-pandai (smart aleck).
