Fugitive Former NTUC Chairman And PAP MP Finally Charged In Court

Former chairman of the National Trades Union Congress and Member of Parliament Phey Yew Kok appeared in court on Wednesday (Jun 24), after being on the run for almost 36 years.

Phey was charged on Dec 10, 1979 with four counts of criminal breach of trust of a total of S$82,520, and other offences under the Trade Union Act. He was out on bail at S$100,000 but did not have his passport impounded. Phey failed to turn up in court on Jan 7, 1980, and a warrant of arrest was issued on the same day. His two sureties lost S$95,000 of their bail bonds as a result.

Investigations revealed Phey had left Singapore for Kuala Lumpur by train on Dec 31, 1979, and proceeded to Bangkok where he disappeared. He surrendered at the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok on Monday, and officers from Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau accompanied him back to the Republic on the same day.

State Courts heard that the charges still stand and investigations will resume. Additional charges may also be tendered.

When the charges were re-read to Phey before the State Courts on Wednesday, the accused said to District Judge Eddy Tham that “if my memory still does not fail me, I don’t think the money was transferred to my personal account”. Phey also had to ask the court interpreter to read the charges to him slowly as he said he was hard of hearing.

There will be no bail, and Phey will be remanded pending further investigation.

Phey is scheduled to appear in court again on Jul 23 at 2.15pm.

For the charges, Phey faces a prescribed punishment of up to seven years’ jail for criminal breach of trust by a public servant, and is liable to a fine.

For the Trades Union Act charges, Phey faces a prescribed punishment of a fine up to S$1,000 unless the offences warrant another form of punishment under the act.

    “ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CORRUPTION”

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that a “clean and non-corrupt system” has been maintained in Singapore for fifty years “because we have zero tolerance for corruption”.

“We will not allow any cover up, even when it is awkward or embarrassing for the Government,” added Mr Lee.

In response to media queries, Mr Lee said: “He has been charged in court, and the law will have to take its course.”

“This will bring closure to a long outstanding case involving a person who was holding public office as an MP and a senior union leader,” he added.

NTUC acknowledged Phey’s surrender to the authorities. “We must now let the law take its course,” the labour movement said in a statement.

Phey was general secretary of multiple trade unions including the Singapore Industrial Labour Organisation (SILO) and the Pioneer Industries Employees Union (PIEU) from 1970 to 1970.

He was also a People’s Action Party Member of Parliament for Boon Teck between 1972 and 1979.

  • Stern Warning For Grassroots Leader Who Threatened Amos Yee

Stern Warning For Grassroots Leader Who Threatened Amos Yee

After two months of police investigation, the police has decided to issue a “stern warning” to Jason Tan Kok Whee, a grassroots leader over a threatening statement he made online, directed at 16-year old Amos Yee.

Amos was being charged with harassment, and with allegedly wounding the religious feelings of Christians in a YouTube video. He has since been judged guilty of the offences and currently held in remand, awaiting his sentence.

Mr Tan had posted the comment earlier in March (shown above), “For me, I would cut his dick and put in his mouth for blemish Jesus Christ.”, referring to Yee.

Mr Tan’s comment was posted under the Facebook handle of “Cookie Tan” on the Facebook page of The Real Singapore.

After netizens got hold of the fact that Mr Tan is a grassroots leader at Telok Blangah., a letter of complaint was subsequently sent to the People’s Association (PA), which oversees all grassroots organisations in Singapore, about Jason Tan’s threatening post. There has been no response from the PA thus far and Jason Tan has since restricted his Facebook page from public view.

Apart from a letter of complaint to PA, TOC also understands that a number of police reports were made against Mr Tan over the statement he made.

One of the people who filed the reports, Mr Lee said he was offended by Mr Tan’s comment and decided to file a police complaint against him. He said that Mr Tan’s statement was a criminal threat to Yee.

Mr Lee said in April, “I am seriously distressed by Jason Tan’s statement that bears the intention to harm Amos Yee physical and sexually. I have checked the penal code of Singapore and it seems that Jason Tan have breached the laws and should be liable to be arrested and be charged in the courts.”

Mr Lee also explained that Mr Tan has likely breached the law in making that comment against Yee, particularly penal code section 503, 504, 507 and 508.

Mr Lee added that Mr Tan should be punished according to the penal code section 506.

Soon after Mr Lee had made his report, he was called up by the investigating officer from the Tanglin Police station for an interview.

He said that the investigating officer had informed him that “quite a few police reports” have been made against Mr Tan.

Mr Lee also shared that the police officer had asked why he felt distress about Mr Tan’s Facebook comment. He replied that any ordinary person would feel distressed when they see someone threatening bodily harm against another and Mr Tan’s offence is worse than Amos’ as Amos didn’t threaten anyone with physical harm.

After close to two months of investigation, the police wrote letters to the people who have filed the police reports against Mr Tan and said that the police has closed the case with a stern warning given to Mr Tan.

One of such letters was sent to the social-political blog, TR Emeritus and was published.

The letter writes, “After careful considerations of the facts and circumstances of the case and in consultation with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, it has been decided that a stern warning be administered to the defendant in lieu of prosecution. On 10/06/2015, the defendant was warned by Chief Investigation Officer, DSP Tan Put Seng in the presence of Senior Investigation Officer, Henry Chua.”

It is understood that the warning letter would be recorded in police records but would not turn up in regular screening by Police.

  • Are PAP Goodies Enough To Secure Your Votes?

Are PAP Goodies Enough To Secure Your Votes?

The PAP is sparing no expense to buy votes and win the next GE under the guise of celebrating S’pore’s jubilee year.

If S’poreans vote for them again because of this $500, it would be akin to taking the money and slapping themselves because this political model is just not sustainable.

The PAP’s hegemony built on political bullying and ruthless and methodical marginalization of political opposition and critics has both intimidated and alienated a significant segment of the population who would otherwise have joined politics and made valuable contributions to the growth of this country.

As one can see over the last 10 years, this is not healthy as S’pore reaches a plateau in terms of economic and social development based on a paradigm that revolves around boosting GDP by importing cheap labour and keeping a docile population attuned to and quietly and unquestioningly following the dictates of the ruling Party.

In fact, under Lee Hsien Loong the future looks bleak as he continues to draw on his military fraternity to fill up ministerial posts. How many of these ex-generals have impressed you or performed up to the standard one expects of anyone who draws more than a million dollar in salary?

Is this the kind of environment you want your children to grow up in?

    Let’s think about it.
    Carefully.

Is your children’s future worth only $500 which in effect represents a drop in the ocean considering the billions that this Government collects in the form of various taxes from ERP to COEs to Stamp Duties?

  • PAP Gaining Political Mileage From National Day Funpack Giveaway

PAP Gaining Political Mileage From National Day Funpack Giveaway

Partisan political mileage on state budget? Got signature from my “grassroots advisor” (read PAP, MP or otherwise) some more, so personalised. We got our NDay fun pack last year when we went for one of the NDP shows. It was fun and my boy and I played with the items for a long time.

This year cannot go but never mind, “grassroots advisor” want to give me funpack to celebrate NDay with her. Not quite appropriate leh. Just give lah, why must stick “grassroots advisor” name and signature to it. A bit the spoil mood. Wonder who is “giving out” the funpacks in Aljunied, Hougang and Punggol East … “stand united” …

Fact: Minister Ng Eng Hen announced during Budget this year that every Singaporean and PR household, 1.2 million, will each receive the funpack. Total cost is $10 million, partly covered by corporate sponsorships.

  • Is PAP Still Relevant Today?

    Is PAP Still Relevant Today?

    Dear Editors,

Last time PAP members fought for Singaporeans’ rights. Dr. Tan Cheng Bock push for us to be able to use our CPF to fund higher education because it was good investment for the future. It was small things like that which cause us to improve our lives. Let’s think about it really.

At that time, parents won’t be financially strained from university fees and the result of having a better educated workforce also helped boost Singapore’s knowledge-based transformation in that era. People are thankful and voted for Dr. Tan for 5 terms with average 77%. Now people are angry!
Today, PAP has changed and now spend more than $240 million a year of taxpayer’s money on scholarships and tuition grants to foreign student. Locals have to suffer from the opportunity costs of a 2-year NS and they are burdened with loans long after graduation.

Look at all these millionaire ministers who don’t even talk sense because they are too disconnected with the ground thanks to their million dollar salaries. How will they add value to the policy making processes as compared to those people in parliament in the 1980s who are so much more hands on?

Some netizen said that opposition movement was censored by PAP and LKY so badly that no one had the balls to act as a check on their “20/20” lack of foresight. Even as PAP try to make changes after GE2011, BTO is still not affordable and country still have infrastructural strain like crowded MRT.

PAP government and their supporters have also start to act arrogant and self-entitled. They have spoken on high grounds and as can be seen in their “words of wisdom” like Tin Pei Ling and Koh Poh Koon. If you are paying top dollar for such quality of people then it really becomes a cruel joke!

Nicholas-Seth Leong who himself is no big deal degrade MRT commuters as “common people” and “peasants” just because he had to take the MRT. Later he was so embarrassed that he had to deactivate his FB after people found out that he drove and old Honda Civic anyway.

It’s like choosing to work for a company which not only the bosses are incompetent, damn show off but also push all the work and blame to you, talk down on you all the time and then when things go well they enjoy the rewards themselves, receive high bonus while they don’t care about you at all!

Why do we need such people? If PAP cannot improve our lives then maybe time to vote them out.
