    Woman Charged With Hurting Religious Feelings Of Her Neighbours In Tampines

    A woman was charged Wednesday (25 January) in the State Courts with hurting the religious feelings and harassment of her neighbours at an HDB block in Tampines last year.

    Lee Dji Lin, 63, faces one charge of wounding the religious or racial feelings of Marliah Jonet for throwing a piece of raw pork from a lift to outside the victim’s flat at Blk 247 Tampines Street 21 on 18 June 2016. If convicted, Lee faces a jail term of up to three years, or a fine, or both.

    The accused also faces two other charges of harassment. One charge alleged that Lee waved a pig-shaped figurine and shouted insults in Malay at one of Marliah’s daughters including “pig, pig, pig, piglet, one by one (your) children die” on 24 April 2016. The other charge alleged that Lee used a bamboo pole attached with a female underwear and swung it towards Marliah’s flat on 14 June 2016.

    Lee faces a fine of up to $5,000 for one harassment charge, and a jail term of up to six months, or a fine of up to $5,000, or both for the other harassment charge.

    In July last year, Yahoo Singapore interviewed Marliah about the incidents. According to Marliah, Lee had been harassing her family for six years.

    Former model Hanis Hussey, Marliah’s sister-in-law, posted a video on YouTube last year allegedly showing Lee being caught in the act.

    A woman was seen shouting in the direction of Marliah’s ninth-storey flat from a floor below in the video. She also used a water hose to spray water towards Marliah’s laundry poles. CCTV footage showed the woman throwing a plastic bag allegedly containing pork onto the corridor of Marliah’s flat.

    Marliah had reported the matter to the police and other relevant authorities about the incidents. She said that she had also sent an email to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who then referred her matter to the Tampines town council.

    Lee was ordered by the court to be remanded for two weeks to undergo psychiatric evaluation. When asked for her response to the court order, the petite and frail-looking Lee claimed that she was innocent.

    The case will be mentioned again on 8 February.

    Malaysian Cops Hunting For “Thaipusam Moral Police”

    Malaysian police said they are trying to track down those behind a Facebook group that threatened to spray paint the bodies of Hindu women who dress “inappropriately” during the Thaipusam festival next month.

    In a report by The Star Online, the police urged the public to inform them of any relevant information regarding the “Thaipusam Spraying Group”.

    “What these individuals are planning to do is unlawful, and we will not allow it.

    “If anyone is caught breaking the law, they will be dealt with,” Selangor police chief Commissioner Abdul Samah Mat told the portal.

    Mr Abdul Samah assured the public that the police will maintain security during the festival, celebrated with processions towards temples such as in Batu Caves and George Town.

    Meanwhile, Hindu Sangam Religious Advisory Board member Dr Thilagavathy Kanagaretnam was reported defending the group, claiming that its intention to prevent women dressed inappropriately was not wrong.

    Despite that, Dr Thilagavathy admitted that their planned actions were “drastic”.

    Thaipusam Task Force coordinator G Gunaraj was also reported saying that it will not condone such vigilantism.

    “There is a dress code that should be followed and we can only educate people to follow it. We can’t force them and it is not right to do so,” Dr Gunaraj said.

    The public Facebook group called “Thaipusam Spraying Group” was recently created by one “Henry Barnabas”, with more than 140 members at the time of writing.

    I just want to share an opinion which i think maybe i think too much or deep. Just recently, a viral video about cruelty of police officers towards the Rohingyas was captured on tape. To make it worst, a Myanmar police was the one filming their activities without showing any sign of guilt. The officers abused and kicked the Rohingyas who were seated on the ground in a line. After some investigating the Myanmar government have come out to say that 4 officers have been caught for the incident and will be taking action against them. This is good right?? But actually it is really not so let me explain. A few weeks back in the news, a man claimed to be Islam and purposely crashed a lorry in an act of terrorism. He drove the lorry into a Christmas market and killed several people. The police in Germany end up catching the wrong person and because the runaway is a muslim, the case became even bigger and is all over the news. So what is my point? I don’t know how to make comparison of one muslim guy with a entire muslim community (rohingya) anyway but if you look properly how come the one single guy gets more attention instead of the Rohingyas?? Then also what if the video was never captured, will we ever get to hear the Myanmar government admitting to abusing their community because this is rare. Senang cakap, orang melayu sudah kene tindas. Can’t you see that we Muslims have been suppressed?

    Myanmar detains cops over Rohingya abuse video

    YANGON • Myanmar’s government yesterday said it has detained several police officers over a video apparently showing Rohingya civilians being beaten, a rare admission that the authorities may have carried out abuses against the Muslim minority.

    Tens of thousands of people from the persecuted ethnic group – loathed by many of Myanmar’s Buddhist majority – have fled a military operation in Rakhine province launched after attacks on police posts in October.

    Bangladesh says some 50,000 Rohingya have crossed its borders over the past two months. Many have brought harrowing accounts of rape, murder and arson at the hands of Myanmar’s security forces. Their stories have raised global alarm and galvanised protests against Myanmar’s de facto leader, Ms Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been accused of not doing enough to help the Rohingya.

    Her government has said troops are hunting militants behind deadly raids on police border posts, denying claims of atrocities and launching a dogged information campaign against reports of abuse.

    However, the authorities yesterday pledged to take action “against police officers who allegedly beat villagers during area clearance operations on Nov 5 in Kotankauk village”.

    Ms Suu Kyi’s office named four officers who were involved in the operation, including constable Zaw Myo Htike, who filmed the “selfie-style” video.

    “Those who (were) initially identified were detained,” it said in a statement. “Further investigations are being carried out to expose other police officers who beat villagers in the operation.”

    Dozens of videos have emerged apparently showing security forces abusing Rohingya, but this is the first time the government has said it will take action over them.

    The footage shows police hitting a young boy on the head as he walks to where dozens of villagers are seated in rows on the ground, hands behind their heads. Three officers then start attacking one of the men, beating him with a stick and kicking him repeatedly in the face.

    A Rohingya activist contacted by Agence France-Presse said the footage had been verified by a refugee from the nearby camp, Shilkhali.

    Around 600 people have been detained since the military operation, according to state media, including six who have died in police custody.

    Buddhist-majority Myanmar has long discriminated against the stateless Rohingya, who rights groups say are among the most persecuted people in the world.

    More than 120,000 have been trapped in squalid displacement camps since violence erupted in 2012 in Rakhine, where they are denied citizenship, access to healthcare and education.

    More than a dozen Nobel laureates wrote to the UN Security Council last week urging action to stop the “human tragedy amounting to ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity” in northern Rakhine.

    Last month, UN rights commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein criticised the government’s “callous” handling of the crisis, describing it as “a lesson in how to make a bad situation worse”.

    Under Myanmar’s junta-era Constitution, Ms Suu Kyi’s civilian administration has limited power over the army, which maintains control of the defence, home and border ministries.

    Five restaurant operators in VivoCity yesterday discovered their premises had been burgled.

    One owner, who declined to be named, told The New Paper: “(It seems) the burglars targeted open-concept restaurants as there are no doors and people can just walk in and out.”

    He added that the restaurant’s closed-circuit television footage showed a pair who “looked like a young couple”.

    “They tried opening the safe, then tapping the back of the cash register but it was too heavy to be moved,” he said.

    “So they took the tip box, which was beside the cash register and inside a locker. They opened it with a screwdriver.”

    He estimated that the tip box had about $300.

    An employee at Japanese restaurant Monster Curryfound the floor in a mess when she arrived at 10am. She alerted her management immediately.

    Her manager said: “Everything was on the floor and she felt something was amiss. Then she saw the safe on the floor.

    “We use barricades only when we close off the restaurant and there are no doors because our restaurant is meant to have an open-concept design.”

    Luckily, nothing was stolen.

    TIP BOX

    The supervisor of hotpot restaurant Jpot said walkie-talkies and a tip box with about $50, were stolen.

    The other affected restaurants are Shin Kushiya and Paik’s Bibim.

    The mall management said the police had been alerted.

    “As police investigations are still ongoing, we will not be able to provide further details pertaining to the case,” they added.

    A police spokesman said: “On Dec 22 at 10.26am, the police were alerted to a case of theft in dwelling at Vivocity.”

    Investigations are ongoing.
