  • Indonesian Maid Jailed For Abusing And Stealing From Sick, Elderly Employer

Indonesian Maid Jailed For Abusing And Stealing From Sick, Elderly Employer

An Indonesian maid threatened to kill her employer’s bedridden husband if he did not reveal the personal identification number (PIN) of his DBS ATM card to her, a district court heard.

Eko Alviah, 30, held a pair of scissors to Mr Chew Seng Mun’s neck and also threatened to cut his nipple when she demanded the 60-year-old’s PIN.

The victim, who was in his flat in Woodlands when the incident occurred on Sept 23 last year (2016), gave her a false PIN number. She then bound his hands and sealed his mouth with duct tape to stop him from shouting for help. She knew that Mr Chew, who had Parkinson’s disease and could only move around slowly, could still shout for help.

Eko, who had been working here for about a year at the time of the incident, then forced open a drawer in the master bedroom that contained her passport, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Jaime Pang.

When she found a box inside the drawer with 25 pieces of jewellery worth a total of $2,648, she took them together with her passport.

She also stole $100 that was on the living room table before leaving the flat.

She went to Woodlands North Plaza and tried to withdraw money from the ATM using Mr Chew’s ATM card. Realising she could not withdraw any money, she threw the card away.

She then boarded a ferry for Batam, Indonesia, where she sold the stolen jewellery to a makeshift stall for about $140.

Meanwhile, Mr Chew’s son found his father taped and bound after unlocking the bedroom door with a spare key.

Mr Chew died on Dec 30, 2016.

DPP Pang said Eko remained in Indonesia for the next seven months. In April this year, she applied for a new passport and made private arrangements to work for an employer in Singapore. She was screened at immigration and when she tried to return here on May 9, she was arrested.

Investigations further revealed that Eko had stolen $700 from Mr Chew’s wallet sometime in December 2015 when she was taking care of him.

The day before, Mr Chew asked Eko to count the money in his wallet. She told him there was $1,300 instead of the actual amount of $2,000, as she intended to steal $700.

She hid the money in her cupboard, and later transferred the cash to one of her shoes. She spent the money on a mobile phone and other personal items.

On Wednesday (July 26), Eko pleaded guilty to three charges. She was given four years’ jail for robbery; six months for criminal intimidation; and two months for theft as a servant.

District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt ordered two of the sentences to run consecutively, making her sentence a total of 50 months. He also imposed an additional 12 weeks’ jail in lieu of caning and backdated her sentence to May 11.

Eko, who had four other charges taken into consideration, could have been jailed for up to 10 years for robbery but was spared the six strokes because she cannot be caned. She could have been sentenced to seven years or more for criminal intimidation; and for theft as a servant, seven years and a fine.

  • Maid Suspected Of Bedok Murders Arrested In Indonesia, Admits To Murders

Maid Suspected Of Bedok Murders Arrested In Indonesia, Admits To Murders

The Indonesian maid who was on the run for almost a week after her elderly employers were found bound and dead in their Bedok Reservoir flat has been caught.

Khasanah, 41, was arrested on Tuesday night when police in Indonesia’s Jambi province raided her hotel room.

Among the items found in her possession were several pieces of jewellery, watches, mobile phones, a laptop computer and cash in various currencies, Jambi police spokesman Kuswahyudi Tresnadi said yesterday.

It was reported that money and valuables were missing from the home of Mr Chia Ngim Fong, 79, and his wife, Madam Chin Sek Fah, 78, when their bodies were found.

Local police were tipped off on her whereabouts on Tuesday by residents in Tungkal Ilir, a rustic town located in West Tanjung Jabung regency on the east coast of central Sumatra, Mr Kuswahyudi added.

Khasanah was overheard talking on the phone at an Internet cafe and saying: “How is their condition? I don’t know if they died. I’m willing to repent by staying at a pesantren (Islamic boarding school).”

Her phone conversation raised suspicion because Indonesian counter-terrorism police have in recent months arrested several pesantren staff and students suspected of being extremists.

It was not clear who Khasanah was talking to on the phone or asking about, but when the police arrived at the Internet cafe, they found out that she had been browsing online reports on the Bedok murders, said Mr Kuswahyudi.

Jambi province is located more than 300km away from Singapore.

  • Philippines: Gunman Dead After Shooting At Resorts World Manila

Philippines: Gunman Dead After Shooting At Resorts World Manila

A man who fired shots inside a casino in the Philippine capital apparently killed himself on Friday (Jun 2), the national police chief said, after initially claiming police shot the assailant dead.

“The lone gunman is already neutralised. He is dead. He burned himself inside the hotel room,” police chief Ronald Dela Rosa told reporters outside.

“He lay down on the bed, covered himself with a thick blanket, apparently poured petrol on the blanket and burned himself.”

Dela Rosa made the comments about an hour after claiming in a television interview that police had shot the gunman dead.

“He’s dead. He was killed by our troops,” Dela Rosa had told the GMA television network.

Dela Rosa did not explain to reporters why he initially claimed police killed the man.

    LIKELY MOTIVE ROBBERY: POLICE

Earlier, people ran screaming out of Resorts World Manila, which is across a road from one of the main terminals of the Philippines’ international airport, after the gunman fired what police chief dela Rosa said was an M4 assault rifle.

“There hasn’t been anyone shot … there are only injuries from people who tried to escape in a stampede or from smoke,” Dela Rosa said on DZMM radio.

Officials said at least 30 people were hurt, some seriously, as they rushed to escape.

Police have said that the likely motive was robbery.

Dela Rosa said the gunman, who appeared to be acting alone, walked into one of the gambling rooms and fired the rifle at a large television screen then poured gasoline onto a gambling table and set it alight.

He said the man then fired again at a stock room containing gambling chips and filled a backpack with them. The man then left the room and went upstairs to a hotel section of the complex, according to dela Rosa.

Windows were smashed on the second floor of the complex just before daylight broke, but it was unclear why and by nearly 6am police did not report any breakthrough in the hunt for the gunman.

The Islamic State group immediately claimed responsibility.

IS said “lonewolf soldiers” from its group carried out the attack, according to the SITE Intelligence Group that monitors terrorist organisations.

But dela Rosa said: “We cannot attribute this to terrorism.” He said it may have just have been an attempted robbery, pointing out the gunman tried to steal the gambling chips.

    TERRIFIED

People inside the casino recounted feelings of terror when the shooting occurred.

“I was about to return to the second floor from my break when I saw people running. Some hotel guests said someone yelled ‘ISIS’,” Maricel Navaro, an employee of Resorts World, told DZMM radio.

“Guests were screaming. We went to the basement locker room and hid there. People were screaming, guests and employees were in panic,” Navaro said.

“When we smelled smoke, we decided to go for the exit in the carpark. That’s where we got out. Before we exited, we heard two gunshots and there was thick smoke on the ground floor.”

The local Pasay Chapter of the Philippine Red Cross said 25 people had been taken to hospital.

Jeri Ann Santiago, who works in the emergency room at the San Juan de Dios hospital, close to Resorts World, said 13 people were being treated, but more were on the way.

Most of the patients were suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and some had injuries such as fractures, she said, adding that none had gunshot wounds.

Local media reports said that police, fire trucks and a SWAT team were in the area.

Resorts World Manila is currently in lockdown following the reports of gunfire from unidentified men, the company said earlier on its Twitter account. It added that it was working closely with the Philippine National Police to ensure that all guests and employees were safe.

“We ask for your prayers during these difficult times,” it said.

ABS-CBN cited eyewitnesses saying that armed men, wearing masks and black shirts, fired shots and burned tables.

Another employee told GMA News said that five shots were fired from the third floor before they were told to leave the establishment.

Resorts World Manila chief operating officer Stephen Reilly subsequently told local journalists in a media conference: “We’re searching the area as much as we can, to make sure the building is clear.”

However Mr Reilly would not confirm how many gunmen were in the building, and said that he did not yet know of any reported injuries.

A casino worker from the third floor of the complex, named Julio, told DZMM radio he heard many gunshots and saw people running up the stairs from the second floor.

Ronald Romualdo, a maintenance worker at Resorts World, told the station he saw a woman fall from an upper floor while trying to escape. “Several people were injured,” he said.

Resorts World Manila is a popular tourist destination opposite Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3. It comprises hotels, a casino complex and a shopping mall.

The US State Department issued an alert for travellers to avoid the area.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law last week across the southern region of Mindanao to crush what he said was a rising threat of Islamic State there.

He declared martial law shortly after militants went on a rampage through the southern city of Marawi, which is about 800 kilometres south of Manila.

Security forces are still battling the militants in Marawi, and the clashes there have left at least 171 people dead.

Duterte said last week he may need to declare martial law across the rest of the country if the terrorism threat spread.

A Muslim separatist rebellion in the southern Philippines has killed more than 120,000 people since the 1970s.

The main Muslim rebel groups have signed accords with the government aimed at forging lasting peace, giving up their separatist ambitions in return for autonomy.

However a range of hardline militants groups have rejected the peace process and in recent years have sought to unite behind IS.

The robber waited for the victim to walk out of the lift before tugging at her handbag. • Young Couple Caught On CCTV During Robbery Spree At VivoCity

Young Couple Caught On CCTV During Robbery Spree At VivoCity

Five restaurant operators in VivoCity yesterday discovered their premises had been burgled.

One owner, who declined to be named, told The New Paper: “(It seems) the burglars targeted open-concept restaurants as there are no doors and people can just walk in and out.”

He added that the restaurant’s closed-circuit television footage showed a pair who “looked like a young couple”.

“They tried opening the safe, then tapping the back of the cash register but it was too heavy to be moved,” he said.

“So they took the tip box, which was beside the cash register and inside a locker. They opened it with a screwdriver.”

He estimated that the tip box had about $300.

An employee at Japanese restaurant Monster Curryfound the floor in a mess when she arrived at 10am. She alerted her management immediately.

Her manager said: “Everything was on the floor and she felt something was amiss. Then she saw the safe on the floor.

“We use barricades only when we close off the restaurant and there are no doors because our restaurant is meant to have an open-concept design.”

    Luckily, nothing was stolen.

    TIP BOX

The supervisor of hotpot restaurant Jpot said walkie-talkies and a tip box with about $50, were stolen.

The other affected restaurants are Shin Kushiya and Paik’s Bibim.

The mall management said the police had been alerted.

“As police investigations are still ongoing, we will not be able to provide further details pertaining to the case,” they added.

A police spokesman said: “On Dec 22 at 10.26am, the police were alerted to a case of theft in dwelling at Vivocity.”

    Investigations are ongoing.
