Singapore Zoo Trials New Outdoor System That Cools Air To 24°C

The Singapore Zoo is trying out a new outdoor air-cooling system that can bring down temperatures to as low as 24°C, while using less energy than an average air conditioner.

The Airbitat Smart Coolers were developed by Innosparks, a subsidiary of ST Engineering. Four units were put on trial on Thursday (Aug 25) at the Singapore Zoo’s ticketing area, and they could be introduced to the other three parks managed by Mandai Park Holdings — River Safari, Night Safari and Jurong Bird Park.

The cooler has a “cold water core” that produces chilled water for a two-stage cooling process: First, warm air is drawn into the unit and cooled by the chilled water; next, the air is passed through an evaporative panel to produce “super-cooled” air.

Innosparks, which took 18 months to conceptualise and produce the units, said typical coolers chill air to an average of 27°C to 28°C, compared to Airbitat’s 24°C. Each unit has coverage of 45 to 60 sqm, depending on its specifications.

According to the firm, the unit can result in energy savings of up to 80 per cent compared to the average air conditioner of an equivalent capacity. The combined energy and water cost can be as low as S$2.50 a day, over an eight-hour cooling cycle.

During the trial period, Innosparks and Mandai Park Holdings will gather data and assess the performance of Airbitat under a variety of weather conditions.

“Singapore’s outdoor heat and humidity can discourage our guests from extending their stay. We would like to address this heat issue in a sustainable, energy-efficient manner,” said Mandai Park Holdings group chief executive officer Mike Barclay. “We are thus excited to trial the eco-friendly and energy-smart Airbitat Smart Cooler at the Singapore Zoo today and we look forward to the eventual roll-out of the Airbitat across our four parks in the near future.”

Said Mr Gareth Tang, vice-president and general manager of Innosparks: “Innosparks was excited to take on such a ‘cool’ challenge from one of Singapore’s top tourist attraction, the Singapore Zoo…the commercial and industrial uses for the Airbitat Smart Cooler are numerous and highly relevant in a hot and humid climate like Singapore.”

  • Bakal Pengantin Gigit Jari, Wang Cengkeram S$5,000 Dipercayai Dilesapkan Pekerja

Bakal Pengantin Gigit Jari, Wang Cengkeram S$5,000 Dipercayai Dilesapkan Pekerja

BAKAL PENGANTIN: “KITA TAK SYAK APA-APA”

CASE: TERIMA 3 LAGI ADUAN SAMA

  • A Thank You To PAP Supporters For Forcing PAP To Be Creative With Our Lives

A Thank You To PAP Supporters For Forcing PAP To Be Creative With Our Lives

I must admit, I never like PAP supporters. I’m actually jealous of them. When i look at them i always ask myself how can someone be so skillful in angkat buah? Like it is a full tull time job for them right until they are so well-versed.

But now i have a new-found appreciation for them.

It is not the opposition parties that keep PAP on their toes. It is actually their supporters right? Every single time PAP lose support from their own supporter base, they always become extra creative. Somehow after that, PAP will come up with some schemes to retain their supporters and to increase their vote share. This PAP creativity means that the Constitution is always updated. Don’t you feel thankful for that?

You ask yourselves, why was the NCMP (Non-Constituency MP) created? Why was the GRC scheme created? Why did they change the powers of the Elected Presidency back in 1994?

Now they want to make further constitutional changes to the Elected Presidency, to ensure minority representation even though for many years PAP keep harping on meritocracy. You know how stubborn they have been on their meritocracy but now suddenly, it is fine if we don’t hold on to this ‘meritocracy” too tightly. Wah the minorities must be very grateful for this.

How did that happen? of course because of PAP supporters lah.

So thank you PAP supporters for carrying their balls and squeezing their balls and forcing to be creative with the live of Singaporeans.

  • Chee Soon Juan: PAP Running Scared, Doesn’t Want Genuine Political Contest

Chee Soon Juan: PAP Running Scared, Doesn’t Want Genuine Political Contest

I have often pointed out that the PAP is never sincere in ensuring that there is genuine political contestation, it always raises the bar just when its opponents come close to beating it at its own game (think GRC, Cooling-off Day, Public Order Act, etc).

The most recent example is the tweaking of the EP. Ostensibly, it is to ensure minority representation in the presidency. The reality is that alarm bells went off when Dr Tony Tan won by just 0.34%-point over Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

As usual, the government goes through the exercise of conducting a “study” of the issue. “Expert” views are then sought to substantiate the recommendations in the study. http://www.todayonline.com/…/mixed-race-teams-presidential-…

The process goes like this. Step 1: Frame the issue, set the parameters. Step 2: Gin up debate in the local media and through various panels (within prescribed parameters, of course). Step 3: Legislate it.

Much time, effort and money is expended to legitimise a course of action on which the PAP has already decided. Remember the discussions about whether to have 9 or 12 NCMP seats or 3- or 6-member GRCs or which race Singaporeans prefer their presidents?

As Noam Chomsky points out: “The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum.”

What is troubling in this instance is that at a time when our country faces complex and enormous challenges – challenges where open and intelligent debate is so desperately needed – the PAP devices yet another scheme to further control the political process.

There is a price, a steep one, to pay for all this.
