  • Two Trainee Malay SMRT Maintenance Staff Killed In Accident At Pasir Ris Station

Two Trainee Malay SMRT Maintenance Staff Killed In Accident At Pasir Ris Station

Two SMRT maintenance staff have died after an accident near Pasir Ris station, the transport operator confirmed on Tuesday (Mar 22).

“At around 11.10am today, there was an accident involving two SMRT maintenance staff along the track at a servicing point near Pasir Ris station,” said SMRT spokesman Patrick Nathan in a statement.

“SCDF was immediately activated and they have confirmed that the two SMRT staff have passed away. We convey our deepest condolences to their families and will be providing support to them at this very difficult time,” he said.

DECEASED STAFF WERE UNDERGOING ON-THE-JOB TRAINING

The deceased staff are Nasrulhudin Najumudin, 26 and Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24. According to SMRT, both of them “joined the company in January 2016 and were undergoing on-the-job training at the time of the accident”.

“(They) were part of a technical team that went down to the track to investigate a reported alarm from a condition monitoring device for signalling equipment. Permission to access the track was authorised,” said Mr Nathan.

“Initial findings indicate that before the accident happened, the team was moving in a single file on the walkway beside the track, on the way to the location of the signalling equipment.”

The brother of a signals officer who witnessed the accident told Channel NewsAsia that the signals officer was “traumatised”.

Pasir Ris resident Francis Dorairaj, who was at the scene, expressed shock and disbelief. “Why were maintenance people on the track when the train was operating?” he questioned.

    INVESTIGATIONS UNDERWAY

SMRT said it is assisting the Police in their investigations into how the accident happened. The Land Transport Authority has also said that it “will be be assisting with investigation into the incident”.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the transport regulator said it is “deeply saddened” by the deaths and where necessary, it will extend assistance to the next-of-kin of the deceased staff.

    TRAIN SERVICES RESUMED AT 1.56PM

Train services along the East-West Line were also disrupted for about 2.5 hours. Free shuttle bus services were available until service between Tanah Merah and Pasir Ris in both directions were resumed at 1.56pm.

  • Caring Malay Bus Captain Was Superhero, Took Care Of Woman Struggling With Toddler

Caring Malay Bus Captain Was Superhero, Took Care Of Woman Struggling With Toddler

This morning at about 10.15, I took a SMRT bus 859B (Licence plate no SMB 3149 X) at the bus stop opposite Blk 491 Admiralty Link. The driver, a Malay man in his twenties ( I couldn’t get his name) seemed reluctant to continue and kept looking towards the back of the bus.

After about a minute of waiting, he walks towards the back and tells a female passenger who is standing to have a seat. The passenger is carrying a toddler. Despite her declining, he politely tries to persuade her to sit down, telling her that it may be uncomfortable and dangerous to stand. This prompts another passenger to persuade others to give up their seats. Someone gives up his seat and the passenger sits down. The journey continues uneventfully.

Prior to boarding the bus, I had been watching the trailer of the new Captain America movie, a cinematic project filled with an assortment of super heroes.

I couldn’t help but think that this young man could have turned a insouciant blind eye to the passenger’s discomfort and the possible danger facing her. He instead chose to address it. This prompted others to rise up and help her. He may have not realized it, but he inspired others to act with civic consciousness.

Now that’s who I call a superhero. It is therefore fitting that I couldn’t even catch his name and he remains a mystery.

  • Jurutera Wanita Lihat Cabaran Sebagai Peluang Timba Ilmu

Jurutera Wanita Lihat Cabaran Sebagai Peluang Timba Ilmu

  • Unsung Heroes: SMRT Tanjong Pagar Malay Stn. Manager And Indian Assistant Stn. Manager Led 7 Commuters To Safety During Fire

Unsung Heroes: SMRT Tanjong Pagar Malay Stn. Manager And Indian Assistant Stn. Manager Led 7 Commuters To Safety During Fire

Some of you might have seen the news that a huge fire broke out at the construction site of Tanjong Pagar Centre last Thursday, and we’d like to share a behind-the-scenes story about the heroic acts of our staff:

When Tanjong Pagar’s Station Manager (SM) Rahmat Bin Aman and Assistant Station Manager (ASM) Amutha D/O Subramaniam heard that there was a huge fire close to an exit, they instinctively grabbed fire extinguishers and ran towards it.

7 commuters were affected and the top priority for our staff was to get them to safety immediately. Being familiar with the station, SM Rahmat hurriedly led the way while ASM Amutha ensured that no one was left behind. ASM Amutha placed the commuters’ safety above her own even though she was asthmatic and had inhaled quite a bit of smoke.

Fortunately, everyone, including the staff were safe. Great work from our staff at Tanjong Pagar station!

  • Leaking Air-Con Unit “Floods” Train Travelling From Sengkang To Outram Park MRT Stations

Leaking Air-Con Unit “Floods” Train Travelling From Sengkang To Outram Park MRT Stations

Stomper Lim was travelling on the North East Line towards Outram Park when he noticed that water was leaking from the roof of the train.

According to him, the leak is a result of the air con unit dripping.

From the video the Stomper sent, the floor of the MRT cabin was filled with water making it look like it was flooded.

In a phone interview with Stomp, he said: “The air-con unit was leaking for a quite a few minutes, all the way until Outram Park.

“All the passengers just walked away from it, I mean there was nothing much that we could do.”

He added that he is unsure as to what had happened after that as he alighted the train.

Earlier this morning, another Stomper sent in a photo of a water strewn all over the floor of a NEL train.

It is unclear as to whether the cause of the watery mess is related to the air-con unit dripping.
