    Mufti: Beware Of Messages That Misquote The Quran, Prophetic Sayings And Traditions To Justify Acts Of Violence

    Singapore’s top Muslim leader has called on his community to be wary of messages that misquote the Quran as well as prophetic sayings and traditions to justify acts of violence.

    In his Friday (Sept 29) sermon delivered at all mosques here, Mufti Fatris Bakaram squarely refuted messages in ISIS’s recent propaganda video featuring Singaporean fighter Megat Shahdan Abdul Samad – and highlighted how they have grossly distorted Islamic teachings.

    The 39-year-old, who has been fighting on the frontlines in Iraq and Syria for four years now, had in the clip urged others to join him on the the terror group’s path of destruction, calling this “the path of the prophets”.

    Shahdan also claimed that Muslims must be hostile to believers of other faiths, and claimed he had answered the call of jihad and was under the leadership of a caliph.

    He also believed that anyone who followed ISIS and died while fighting for the terror group would die a martyr, noted Dr Fatris.

    “All of this is completely wrong. Islam has never considered the killing of innocent lives as jihad,” he said. “Islam does not allow for violence and oppression to prevail, places of worship to be destructed and heritage sites to be destroyed and blown up.”

    Those who participated in these crimes are under the “skewed impression” they will die as martyrs.

    And even worse, said Dr Fatris, they justify these heinous acts by misquoting Islam, the Quran and prophetic traditions.

    “It is obvious that what is being committed by ISIS is not just a crime towards Islam, but towards the global community,” he added.

    The Mufti made clear that ISIS’ actions are fundamentally against ethics and guidelines taught by the Prophet Muhammad.

    Dr Fatris said: “Now, more than ever, we will need to ensure that ourselves, families, and our beloved community have the religious resilience to challenge the messages that violates Islamic teachings and endanger the lives of humanity.”

    It is the responsibility of every Muslim to understand religious texts comprehensively, and the community should not simply and uncritically accept information from unknown sources without verification, he added.

    “Failure to comprehend the context of religious texts can lead to problematic and inaccurate interpretations,” said Dr Fatris, pointing out that various verses in the Quran have specific context, and cannot be applied to all circumstances.

    He added: “Applying these texts that are meant to be specific in nature to any situation is considered a deviance.”

    Dr Fatris urged the community to find out where and from whom their family members are obtaining religious instruction from in the hopes of protecting them from deviant teachings.

    The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) in a statement on Friday expanded on Dr Fatris’ sermon, pointing out the problematic aspects of the ISIS video.

    Among other things, it highlighted how Shahdan intended to encourage and justify violence against non-Muslims, even when Muslims live in peace and harmony among them – which “goes strongly against the Quranic principle of reciprocating peace and harmony”.

    It added: “What Megat Shahdan has done is therefore blasphemous and un-Islamic, as it taints and distorts the intentions of our prophets to suit ISIS’ violent narratives.”

    Shahdan had parroted ISIS doctrine of encouraging Muslims to migrate to “Islamic territories”, noted Muis.

    “However, credible Muslim scholars worldwide have always maintained that Muslims should continue to be contributing citizens and co-exist harmoniously with other communities in diverse, multi-religious societies,” it said, adding that scholars in both the classical and contemporary periods, have said that there is no need for Muslims to migrate if they can practise their religion where they live.

    In Singapore, it said, the community is privileged to have the Administration of Muslim Law Act, which helps guide, support and ease religious life here.

    The Association of Adult Religious Class Students (Perdaus), citing the ISIS video as well, also released a statement on Friday, saying it rejects and condemns any expressions of religious violence and hatred.

    It believes an “open, consultative and evidence-based discussion on sensitive issues” is the way forward, and stressed the imporatnce for both Muslims and non-Muslims to learn about Islam from credible teachers under the Asatizah Recognition Scheme.

    Perdaus added that it regularly ensures teachers’ and students’ understanding and practice of Islam are deeply rooted in the local context.

    “We strongly believe that an Islamic education with an accredited institution and under credible teachers is an essential part of life in multicultural Singapore and should be made accessible to all,” it said.

    “Education plays a critical part in stomping out radical ideas and teachings, especially amongst those who have no one to turn to for answers.”

    Footage has emerged from China of a police officer slamming to the ground a woman holding a child.

    In the video, which was filmed in Shanghai on September 1, the woman holds a toddler with one arm as she argues with a police officer.

    When the woman begins to push the officer, he later slams her and her child to the ground hard.

    Two passersby rush to help the distressed child as the police restrain her mother with force.

    Some infuriated by the incident allegedly attacked the officers involved and was recorded in a separate video.

    The police officer has been suspended, according to local news.

    It is believed that the confrontation was over a parking infringement.

    Twitter user harleen shared disturbing photos of her murdered cat along the HDB stair well at Bukit Batok West Ave 7. She claimed that a neighbour could be responsible for this heinous act. The cat allegedly had its head smashed against the wall and threw down the stairs from the trauma at the right side of its head.

    “My cat was murdered at Bukit Batok West Avenue 7. We suspect that my cat somehow sneaked out of my house and a neighbor smashed his head and threw him down the stairs. There’s a trauma at the right side of his head where most of the blood is coming from. He’s only 10 months fucking old i swear to god whoever who did this to Dan i hope you fucking rot in hell.

    honestly we’re in shock but they never dare to venture out of the house. the furthest they went is always at our shoe rack. my cats aren’t ever a nuisance. they stay in my bloody house and never go around meeting other strays or even disrupting other homes

    update: so I’ve met up with the police and ava officer and while the police checks the cctv, we’ve hand over Dan’s body to the awa for post mortem to figure out his cause of death. we’ve ruled out poisoning and falling from my house window as i live on the 10th storey. currently undergoing investigation and I’ve handed over my cat for post mortem to find out cause of death

    Ketika  tentera kerajaan Myanmar semakin menghampiri kampung Pwint Phyu Chaung, penduduk hanya mempunyai beberapa pilihan.

    Noor Ankis, 25 yang membuat keputusan untuk tidak melarikan diri mengatakan beliau dipaksa melutut dan kemudian dipukul sebelum dibawa ke suatu tempat rahsia untuk dirogol tentera kerajaan.

    Rashida Begum, 22 pula memilih untuk terjun ke dalam sebuah sungai bersama tiga anaknya. Seorang anak Rashidah yang masih bayi hanyut dan gagal dijumpai dalam kejadian tersebut.

    Cerita-cerita dari pelarian Myanmar ini yang kini tinggal di Bangladesh memberikan gambaran jelas mengenai keganasan tentera kerajaan sejak beberapa bulan lepas.

    Kisah mereka juga selari dengan laporan yang didedahkan oleh pertubuhan-pertubuhan hak asasi manusia.

    Dalam laporan tersebut, tentera kerajaan memasuki kampung-kampung di utara Rakhine dan melepaskan tembakan secara rawak, menembak pelancar roket dan memusnahkan kediaman sementara kanak-kanak dan wanita dirogol secara sistematik.

    Dari imej satelit yang didedahkan Humans Right Watch (HRW), kira-kira 1,500 kediaman telah dimusnahkan.

    Kempen kekejaman kerajaan Myanmar pula kini beralih ke arah selatan dan didakwa tidak akan berhenti sehingga kumpulan etnik Muslim, Rohingya dihapuskan.

    “Kami tak tahu langkah tentera kerajaan seterusnya, tapi kami tahu serangan ke atas orang awam sedang berterusan, kata Matthew Smith dari kumpulan Fortify Rights, dipetik laporan Irish Times.

    Lawan pengganas konon

    Sebuah suruhanjaya yang ditubuhkan kerajaan minggu lalu menafikan dakwaan pembunuhan beramai-ramai yang dilakukan tentera kerajaan di kampung-kampung yang telah dikepung.

    Para wartawan dan para penyiasat dari kumpulan hak asasi manusia pula dilarang menjejakkan kaki ke kampung-kampung tersebut.

    Myanmar menafikan melakukan sebarang pencabulan hak asasi, kecuali kejadian polis Myanmar yang dirakam membelasah penduduk Rohingya.

    Penerima Hadiah Nobel, Aung San Suu Kyii pula dikecam kerana berdiam diri dan ketawa apabila soalan-soalan berkenaan penindasan etnik Rohingya ditujukan kepadanya.

    Kempen kekejaman kerajaan dilaporkan bermula pada Oktober selepas sembilan anggota polis dibunuh dan dipercayai dilakukan kumpulan pemberontak bersenjata dari etnik Rohingya.

    Sehingga kini, tiada sebarang suspek kejadian dikenal pasti.

    Kerajaan Myanmar menyifatkan orang ramai ‘tersalah anggap’ mengenai kempennya yang menyasarkan penduduk etnik Rohingya.

    Sehingga kini, dianggarkan 65,000 pelarian etnik Rohingya sudah melarikan diri ke Bangladesh, kata laporan Organisasi Migrasi Antarabangsa (IOM).

    Semua dirogol, semua dibakar

    Tentera kerajaan dilaporkan pergi dari rumah ke rumah untuk menangkap lelaki dewasa dan kemudian merogol wanita dan membakar rumah.

    Kampung Kyet Yoepin yang mengandungi 245 kediaman musnah dalam operasi dua hari pertengahan Oktober lepas, kata HRW.

    Muhammad Shafiq yang berusia 20-an mengatakan askar kerajaan akan membariskan lelaki berasingan dari wanita.

    Ketika seorang askar memegang tangan kakaknya, Shafiq melawan dan beliau dibelasah dengan teruk oleh tentera kerajaan dan ditinggalkan untuk mati.

    Shafiq kemudian melarikan diri bersama anaknya sambil dihujani peluru yang dilepaskan tentera kerajaan.

    Beliau kemudian bersembunyi di sebuah jelapang padi dan melihat dari jauh kampung Kyet Yoepin dibakar oleh kerajaan.

    “Dah tak ada rumah lagi. Semua sudah dibakar,” kata Shafiq.

    Tentera kerajaan suka wanita muda

    Noor Ankis mengatakan tentera kerajaan membongkar semua rumah pada waktu pagi untuk mencari wanita muda.

    “Mereka kumpulkan kesemua wanita beramai-ramai dan membawa mereka ke satu tempat.

    “Yang mana mereka suka, mereka rogol. Di tempat itu, hanya ada tentera kerajaan dan wanita, tiada orang lain,” jelas Noor Ankis.

    Sufayat Ullah, 20 terjaga dari lena tidur selepas dikejutkan dengan bunyi tembakan.

    “Tentera menggunakan parang apabila mereka sudah dekat dengan penduduk.

    “Kalau jauh, mereka tembak,” kata Sufayat mengingati kejadian ngeri berkenaan.

    Sufayat melepaskan diri selepas terjun ke dalam sungai dan berenang sejauh yang boleh.

    Beliau tinggal di dalam air selama dua hari sebelum mendapat tahu tentera kerajaan telah membakar kediaman keluarga. Ibu, ayah dan dua adik beradiknya ditinggalkan di dalam rumah yang sedang dibakar dan maut.

    “Saya rasa tidak tenteram. Mereka sudah bunuh ibu dan ayah saya. Apa lagi yang tinggal untuk saya di dunia ini?” katanya sambil mengelap air mata.

    A Singaporean Ms Melisa Liu Rui Chun just lost a life in a terror attack in Bangkok and here we are carrying on with life as per normal. No one-minute silence, no mark of respect. Very little reflection. The government will tell you that it is a good sign that the community can carry on depite such a tragedy but is there really no room to think about what happened?

    Thai Police still have not identified the culprit and the motive. Whatever it is, this is a terror attack not just on Thailand, but also other countries whose citizens have been a victim of this attack. The perpetrator does not have be a bearded, AK-47 wielding mad man for this to be called a terror attack. This is someone using violence to force authorities to submit to them. Selfish people who only think about their self-interest.

    Violence, for whatever reasons cannot be justified. If there is no rule of law and everyone who doesn’t get their way resort to violence to achieve their objectives, how iwll the world turn out?

    What was supposed to be a happy occasion for her turned ot to be a nightmare for her friends and family. Within seconds, lives were changed. Lives were destroyed and may not recover even after years.

    Even as we go on with our busy lives, let’s reflect about what happened. Reflect on why the Singaporean life is lost bcause of an act of senseless violence. Do not let her death be in vain.
