Woodlands Crash Victim Was A Father Of Two, Who Just Moved Into New Flat With Family

Mr Muhammad Khairman Mohamed Sabari and his wife had planned an open house this weekend at their new four-room Woodlands Rise flat which they had moved into just a week ago.

Instead, around 100 people gathered at the home on Tuesday (Aug 8) to bid farewell to the 30-year-old delivery driver, who was killed at about 7.30pm on Monday (Aug 7) after a car crashed into the motorbike he was riding.

The car had been travelling in the opposite direction when it mounted a divider before crashing into Mr Khairman near the junction of Woodlands Avenue 12 and Woodlands Avenue 1. The driver of the car has since been arrested.

Mr Khairman’s wife, Ms Nur Elina Sukhaimi, 31, told The Straits Times that she first suspected something was wrong when she called him and found his mobile phone turned off.

Typically, Mr Khairman, the youngest of three male siblings, would pick his wife up on his way home from work. But on Monday, she had gone home herself as he was running late, said Ms Elina, who is in customer service.

In her last text message to him at around 6pm, the couple discussed what to buy for their new home.

“I tried calling him around 7pm to confirm what he wanted for dinner. He had earlier agreed on fried rice. But his mobile phone was off, which was very unusual,” she said.

At around 9pm, her brother told her that a motorcyclist had been involved in an accident in Woodlands. Ms Elina, who had been married for almost five years, was still unable to contact her husband, who worked for DFS Venture Singapore in Kallang.

Worried, she went to a nearby police station while her brother and cousins headed to the crash site. It was at the station where Ms Elina received the news from her brother that her husband had been killed.

The accident had been filmed on the dashboard camera of a nearby car. It was making the rounds on the Internet on Monday night.

Ms Elina said she watched the clip only after she received the bad news and has been unable to forget what she saw. She recognised him on the Yamaha RXZ motorcycle he had owned for two years.

She said: “He was a very safe road user. He was a driver for the longest time from national service till now… But judging from the video (clip), there’s no way he could have escaped.”

She met her husband when they were in Woodlands Ring Secondary School. She described him as a quiet person who loved being around family.

“He would help people in trouble and give them advice,” Ms Elina said. “People looked up to him like a big brother. I’m really going to miss his smile.”

The couple have two children – a three-year-old daughter named Nur Rihanna and a six-month-old son named Reyhan Luhaidan.

Ms Elina said that the children do not yet know about the accident.

“Rihanna doesn’t know about her father’s death,” she said. “She just thinks it’s Hari Raya because there are many visitors to our home.”

  • 1 Dead, 4 Taken To Hospital After Car Flips Over In Fatal Accident At Woodlands Avenue 12

1 Dead, 4 Taken To Hospital After Car Flips Over In Fatal Accident At Woodlands Avenue 12

A motorcyclist was killed and four other people, including a one-year-old infant, were taken to hospital after a car flipped over onto the opposite lane at Woodlands Avenue 12 on Monday evening (Aug 7).

Channel NewsAsia understands the driver of the car was trying to avoid another vehicle when his car hit a traffic light and overturned.

Police said they were alerted to an accident involving a car, a lorry and two motorcycles at the junction of Woodlands Avenue 12 and Woodlands Avenue 1 at around 7.30pm.

A 30-year-old male motorcyclist was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. The other motorcyclist, a Malaysian, and a married couple in the car were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. The driver of the car is in his early thirties.

Police said that the couple’s one-year-old child who was in the car as well, was taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

    Police investigations are ongoing.

Dashcam footage circulating on social media showed a dark-coloured car flipping over a road divider onto the lane opposite. One motorcyclist appears to be knocked into the path of the lorry and the other motorcyclist rams into the overturned car and falls over.

Members of the public were seen rushing forth to help. One man pulled the infant from the overturned car, and another passenger appeared to crawl out of the car.

Other pictures on social media showed debris and what looked like vehicle parts scattered across the junction, as well as what appeared to be a dislodged pedestrian crossing light.

Facebook user Wilson Lee shared video of the aftermath of the accident. He said that there was “massive congestion” when he took the video at around 10pm.

  • SDP Member: Marsiling Residents Indifferent To Halimah’s Presidential Candidacy, Wants By-Election

SDP Member: Marsiling Residents Indifferent To Halimah’s Presidential Candidacy, Wants By-Election

We continued our house visits at one of the HDB blocks in Marsiling this evening.

We asked the residents 2 questions:

    1. The incumbent, Mdm Halimah Yacob, has indicated her interest to contest the next Presidential Election (PE). She claimed that she has received a lot of encouragement & blessings from Marsiling constituents. Are you supportive of her presidential bid?

Most of the residents we spoke to appeared lukewarm to this question & did not seem really bothered if she would contest or not- let alone support her.

    2. If Mdm Halimah contests the next PE, she will have to resign from the PAP & vacate her parliamentary seat. Do you think a by-election should be called thereafter so that Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC residents have a chance to elect a full slate of 4 new MPs?

All the residents we spoke to unanimously agreed that a by-election should be called.

The residents’ sentiments are in sharp contrast to what Minister Chan Chun Sing has said in Parliament (https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/…/no-by-election-if-minor…/).

In the last General Elections in 2015, the PAP campaigned based on the slogan: “With You, For You, For Singapore”.

It will be interesting to see how they can continue to keep the above election promise when they deny the voters of Marsiling-Yew Tee their constitutional rights to elect new political representatives via a by-election.
