  • Man Arrested Over Deaths Of Wife, Daughter, On Chinese New Year

Man Arrested Over Deaths Of Wife, Daughter, On Chinese New Year

Singapore police arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the suspected murder of a 39-year-old woman and her 4-year-old daughter on 28 January, the first day of Chinese New Year. The suspect is believed to be the deceased woman’s husband and was arrested from his flat, where the incident happened.

The police were asked for assistance at a sixth-floor unit at Woodlands Drive 52, Block 619, at around 6.35pm, following the SCDF sent one fire engine, one red rhino, one ambulance and a support vehicle to the scene. The two bodies were discovered in the bedroom and the paramedics declared them dead at the scene. However, the cause of death still remains unknown.

According to Straits Times, police said there was a burning smell in the air at the site. A 47-year-old transport supervisor also said that he noticed the smell of burning plastic when he left the house at around 7am that day. “At first, I thought people were burning things for Chinese New Year, but when I returned in the evening around 5pm the smell was still there,” he said, as reported.

The supervisor also said that he last saw the woman, identified as Madam Choong Pei Shan, on Monday or Tuesday morning hanging clothes.

It was also reported that another neighbour, who lives a few units down, said the couple moved into the unit about five years ago and they mostly kept to themselves. However, the woman, who was a housewife, used to greet and smile at people.

The neighbours also said that they were completely unaware of the incident as there were not sounds, shouting or screaming. Police have ordered an investigation into the case.

  • Car Lands Up In Woodlands HDB Lift Lobby After Driver Loses Control

Car Lands Up In Woodlands HDB Lift Lobby After Driver Loses Control

A Toyota shot down a flight of stairs from a multi-storey car park and ended up at the lift lobby of a block in Woodlands on Friday (Sep 16), after its driver lost control of the vehicle.

A caller to Mediacorp’s news hotline alerted Channel NewsAsia to the incident, saying that he was “shocked” to see the car at the lift landing of Block 791, Woodlands Avenue 6.

A second-storey resident, who wanted to be known as Madam Low, said: “At about 3.15pm, I was preparing my dinner when I heard a loud sound. I came down and saw this uncle get out of the car.” She added that the car had come to a stop diagonally from the lift, and that nobody appeared to be injured.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that it received a call for an ambulance. Paramedics assessed that a Chinese man in his 60s had minor injuries but refused to be taken to a hospital.

When Channel NewsAsia visited the scene at around 5pm, the car was being towed up the stairs and back to the car park.

The driver, who wanted to be known only as Mr Tan, told Channel NewsAsia that he was trying to leave the car park at around 3pm but that he had stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes. “I got the brakes wrong (sic), then I accelerated too much,” he said.

The 62-year-old self-employed man added he was in the area for work. “I came to work here only. I was taking someone here.”

The driver said that he was unsure what to do next. “How to get a new car now?”

The police said investigations into the incident are underway.

  • Don’t Complain About Food At Geylang Bazaar

Don’t Complain About Food At Geylang Bazaar

Why are people complaining about the food at Geylang Bazaar? It has never been worth going since the last time I went there in 2010.

The food is getting more expensive but the quality is getting worse. I can’t blame the sellers there because I understand the rental is extortionate, food prices are going up and their profit margins are razor thin these past few years.

If you decide to bother going there, it’s caveat emptor. Those who don’t bother about wanting to be seen there (ie. step handsome or jambu) have already taken to ordering our Hari Raya provisions online.

I pity the sellers there. Just hawk your wares on the Internet. There will still be plenty of customers, believe me. Makcik yang tak pandai pakai Internet ke Facebook, sila belajar. Gi tanya anak ke sedara yang ikut trend anak muda hari ini.

All in all, the bazaars at Geylang, Tampines and Woodlands are hot, cramped, dirty and ridiculously expensive places to shop.

The experience is priceless, for some. For everything else, there’s Mastercard.

Malik is buying stuff for Hari Raya.
Malik knows the bazaars are horrible. He doesn’t go there and complain about the trip once he gets home.

Malik uses the Internet and his Mastercard. Malik knows how to use bank transfers.

Malik is smart. Be like Malik.
