National Day Babies: Four Families Welcomed 3 Boys and 1 Girl

SINGAPORE- Singaporeans may be getting ready for a big national day party, but several families started celebrations early.

At least four mothers gave birth to their new babies at midnight Saturday, marking the start of Singapore’s 49th birthday.

Mrs Melissa Fathie was one of them. She gave birth to Elijah Fathie, a 2.9kg baby boy. “I was shocked, we thought he would be born maybe 10 or 11pm or Aug 8,” she said. Her labour contractions started at about 9pm, when she was rushed to Thomson Medical Centre. She had been given a pill to induce the birth earlier in the day as the baby was growing quite heavy in her tummy. Any bigger and the it would be “difficult for the mother to push”, said husband Muhamad Fathie, 37.

At Parkway East, Mrs Suhailah Said gave birth to her first baby girl 20 seconds after midnight. At Mount Alvernia Hospital, lucky baby boy Logan was born to parents Brandon and Emmeline Lim. At Raffles Hospital, a 2.95kg bundle of joy, Akif Rifqy Fadzil, was born to parents Amirah Mazlan and Fadzil Sultan.

Mrs Fathie has given birth to two daughters seven-year-old Deirdra and a four-year-old Isabelle. But Elijah’s was the hardest so far, she said. “I wanted an epidural but there was no time for that,” the property agent said. Still, when she heard son’s first cry, she was overwhelmed with joy. “It always feels like the first time,” the 35-year-old said.

The Fathie family will be catching the National Day Parade tonight at the ward in Thomson Medical Centre. Said Mr Fathie: “My son will know that there will be fireworks to celebrate his birthday every year. It could not be more fantastic.”

SINGAPORE — Two religious organisations — the Singapore Buddhist Lodge and the Taoist Federation of Singapore — have made a donation of an undisclosed amount to help Syrian refugees in Turkey.

They are the latest non-Muslim religious organisations to step forward, after Abbot Venerable Sik Kwang Sheng from Bright Hill Temple pledged support for the Aid to Syrian Refugees in Turkey (ASRIT) initiative last month. ASRIT is a joint initiative by two Muslim organisations, SimplyIslam and the Muslim Expatriates Network.

Mr Tan Thiam Lye, chairman of the Taoist Federation of Singapore, said both the Taoist and Buddhist organisations enjoy a “close working relationship” with their Muslim counterparts.

Their donations came on the heels of a call by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean last month for all Singaporeans to extend aid to Syrian refugees. So far, ASRIT has raised more than S$420,000 from donations collected in mosques, during roadshows and from online contributors. The money raised will go towards building a school for refugee children and buying food packs, school and healthcare supplies for the Syrian refugees, who number almost a million.

Meanwhile, ASRIT will be sending more than 10 volunteers to the Syrian refugee camps in Turkey in September in its first overseas mission.

  • RTM Encrypted Signals to Ensure Commonwealth Games Coverage Exclusive to Malaysia Only

RTM Encrypted Signals to Ensure Commonwealth Games Coverage Exclusive to Malaysia Only

    rtm1

SINGAPORE – Singapore did not block the airing of Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) news to Singapore households.

Rather, it was RTM that had encrypted signals to ensure that its coverage of the Commonwealth Games was confined to Malaysia only.

“It seems like the mystery of the alleged blocking of RTM1 news by Singapore is, in fact, the encryption of signals by RTM,” said Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr Ong Keng Yong, in comments provided to the New Straits Times yesterday.

Mr Ong’s statement addressed Singapore viewers’ complaints that RTM1 broadcasts had been blocked from their homes.

Earlier this week, Malaysian Broadcasting Department technical services director Abdul Wahid Hamid explained that some blockage of RTM1 broadcasts had occurred. But this was to protect the broadcasting rights for the Commonwealth Games in Glasglow.

Claims that the Singapore government had blocked coverage of the violence in Gaza were unfounded, he added.

Mr Ong also denied that the blocking had anything to do with Singapore’s stand on the Gaza issue because it was allegedly pro-Israel, according to the New Straits Times.

  • Old Man Finds Boy “Very Cute and Handsome”, Then Molest Him at Void Deck

Old Man Finds Boy “Very Cute and Handsome”, Then Molest Him at Void Deck

    pedophile

SINGAPORE: A 10-year-old boy who was sitting at the void deck and playing with his handphone was molested repeatedly despite pushing his perpetrator away.

The perpetrator, Teo Koon Tian, 57, was sentenced to 20 months’ jail on Thursday (Aug 7). At about 4pm on July 18 this year, Teo purchased three cans of beer from a provision shop and was drinking at the void deck. As he was drinking, he spotted the boy, who cannot be named as he is a minor.

Teo told the boy that he was “very cute and handsome” and touched him on the cheeks. However, the boy ignored Teo and continued to play with his handphone. Teo then walked around the void deck and touched the boy’s cheeks again, and the boy once again ignored him.

Subsequently, Teo sat behind the boy and used his right hand and patted and rubbed the boy’s left thigh. Though the boy immediately pushed his hand away, Teo continued to use his right hand to touch the boy’s thigh, proceeding higher up the thigh. The boy was very scared when Teo touched him, the court heard. The boy continued to push Teo’s hand away, after which Teo walked away.

The boy then immediately went back home and told his elder sister about the incident. They went down to look for Teo but could not find him. They later called their mother and filed a police report that night.

During the hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Joshua Lim argued that the offence was committed in broad daylight and the boy was “simply trusting in the safety and security of his own housing estate”.

“In no uncertain terms, he (Teo) has to be told that he has to pay for his crimes against innocent, vulnerable, defenceless young boys,” said Mr Lim.

He also urged the court to send the message that the criminal justice system will “come down hard” on child molesters who commit such offences. “You will be appropriately censured, castigated and dealt with,” added Mr Lim.

Dalton and Brunger were found murdered at 4.15am Wednesday with stab wounds on their chest and back after an early morning quarrel with four local men at Abell Road.

A restaurant worker had alerted the police after witnessing the incident.

A quarrel is alleged to have taken place between the victims and suspects while both parties were drinking at a pub. When the students left the pub on foot, the suspects pursued them in a car and one of the suspects attacked victims.

At 6am, police arrested three of the suspects at their homes and seized the car, a knife, mobile phones. They have been remanded for seven days. The fourth suspect was arrested at 4.45pm and will be remanded today.

Dalton and Brunger arrived in Sarawak in June to undergo a six-week placement at a local hospital there. They were due to complete their placement on Thursday and planned to return to Britain later this month.
