Owners Of T Bob’s Corner Donating Some Earnings To Help Autistic 11 Year Old Boy

The owners of a Western food restaurant are donating part of its proceeds to help an 11-year-old boy who has autism.

Miss Nurul Jannah Saharuddin, 23, and Miss Indah Nabielah Zulkarnain, 24, who run T Bob’s Corner in Bedok, are giving up 30 per cent of the eatery’s takings from Oct 18 to 23 to help the boy, Akid, after hearing about his plight from a musician who performed at their restaurant recently.

Earlier this year, The New Paper reported on how Akid had become more aggressive and violent because of his condition. (See report below.)

The women bought over the business at Block 527, Bedok North Street 3, two months ago with the help of their fathers.

Miss Indah said that donating a sizeable chunk of their week-long revenue would hit their take-home income, but both of them shrugged it off.

Miss Jannah told The New Paper: “We thought 30 per cent was a good number. If you want to help, it has to be a substantial amount, even if it hurts a little.”

Miss Indah said: “Well, businesses come with risks, right?”

Only their income will be affected as their staff of two chefs and three part-time waiters will continue to draw their full wages.

Miss Jannah, an RMIT University business management graduate, said: “It would demoralise them otherwise. So we both decided we would make the sacrifice so Akid can benefit from it.”

They estimate that they will lose about 15 to 20 per cent of their take-home income for that week.

It’s their way of giving back, they said.

    VOLUNTEER WORK

Miss Indah, a life sciences graduate, became involved in fund-raising activities while studying at the National University of Singapore.

Her experience in volunteering at an orphanage in Indonesia five years ago also played a part in making her want to help Akid.

“Five years later, the children (at the orphanage) are still messaging me on Facebook, asking me when I’m returning to visit. The fact that these kids remember us means that they treasure every little bit we do, even if we didn’t do much,” she said.

Agreeing, Miss Jannah said: “My parents told me, ‘You don’t need money to be nice’.

“(Indah) didn’t have to fork out a million dollars to have the kids remember her. It’s just the things we do that matter.”

Miss Jannah’s path to volunteering was more personal.

A decade ago, she was a beneficiary of a South East Community Development Programme financial aid programme.

Her mother, who has fought thyroid cancer for close to two decades, was also a source of inspiration.

“She never saw her condition as something to hold her back. She still gave back by volunteering on weekends,” Miss Jannah said.

She plans to ask her musician father, Mr Saharuddin Jalil, to invite some bands to perform at the restaurant next week in the hope of attracting more customers.

Asked if they are worried about coping with the expected crowd, Miss Indah said with a smile: “That will be a good problem.”

  • Gilbert Goh: Thank You Singaporeans For Contributing To Betterment Of Child Refugees In Lebanon

Gilbert Goh: Thank You Singaporeans For Contributing To Betterment Of Child Refugees In Lebanon

Had a very interesting time spending half a day interacting with the refugee children at Shatila camp Beirut yesterday.

They appear happy and contented when classes resume after a one-week Haji break. The classes are managed by the Palestinian NGO based in Beirut – National Institution of Social Care & Vocational Training.

You can look through their activities at www.socialcare.org.

I remember my parents took me out of a kindargarten permanently as we were very poor and couldn’t afford the school fees then. I would walk past the school regularly and peep inside marvelling at those who are so priviledged to attend the classes.

The kids spend 6 years here in a refugee childcare facility before moving on to the government schools.

Its the only fun time kids have before they return home to their shoddy apartment. Some are orphans and will return to the orphanage.

The school hours are from 8am to 1pm and most kids are Palestinian refugees with some coming from Syrians and others.

Its a priviledge knowing the kids and they appear strong in the face of adversity. Kudos also to the teachers who show dedication and commitment in their line of duty.

Most of the teachers are refugees themselves.

Sometimes you find tears rolling down your cheek unknowingly when you move around the centre – its that emotional.

It only takes USD $150 to sponsor a refugee child per annum to ensure that he has a decent pre school education before he ventures into the government school. We have so far collected close to $3000.

We are targetting 100 children and it can be a one-off thing.

Let us try to make a small Singaporean dent in this part of the war-torn world…

Visited another kindargarten centre at Bourj AlBarajneh Beirut today.

    childcare-in-lebanon

Its a 2-storey building full of kids from age 3 to 6 years old.

Some just enter the nursery yesterday for the new school term and are abit bewildered.

I am glad to catch them before they leave at 1pm.

Both the centres I visited yesterday and today will be funded by the many Good Samaritans who donated to the refugee cause.

The school also requested for gas heater as winter is approaching and it can be quite cold at 15 deg average. We went around sourcing and will try our level best to donate a few sets to the centre soon.

Each gas heater costs around USD $100 to $120.

Thanks alot Singaporeans as we have made our little significant mark here in Beirut Lebanon.

We may be a small country but we have a big heart!

  • Masjid Dan Yayasan Rahmatan Lil Alamin Pungut Dana Bantu Mangsa Gempa Bumi Nepal

Masjid Dan Yayasan Rahmatan Lil Alamin Pungut Dana Bantu Mangsa Gempa Bumi Nepal

  • Wearwhite Official Statement: Ways Muslims Can Show Support to Palestinians

    Singaporeans Palestine gaza

Let us show compassion and extend our help to our Muslim brothers and sisters who are being brutally oppressed and mistreated – in Gaza specifically and also elsewhere like in Myanmar, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Kashmir, Iraq, Syria, indeed fee kulli makaan (wherever they may be). We can do this in the following ways:

    1) If possible, on a daily basis perform the Taubah and Hajat prayers. Do so wholeheartedly. Let the tears of remorse and repent flow and wet your cheeks.

    2) Find out the reality of what is happening in the affected countries. Do not merely depend on Mainstream Media. Make an effort to get information from other more reliable sources of information – especially from genuine Islamic resources.

Find out the historical and political background of the places in conflict. Spread the word through FB postings, etc. Talk to your friends and family members.

    3) Boycott products of any company that support tyranny openly and directly in whatever capacity possible.

    4) Recite the Qunut Nazilah regularly. It can be done in all fardh prayers – alone or in congregation. As it constitutes part of one’s salat, it must be done in Arabic. Find out how. It can also be done outside of solat.

    5) Recite the zikr with all your heart and mind; Ya Muntaqim (Oh Ye Avenging One), Ya Qahhar (Oh Ye Imposing One) & Ya Jabbar (Oh Ye Powerful One).

    6) Support and provide financial assistance/donations to aid organisations that practice transparency.

    7) Liberate our hearts and minds, and any other form of attachment (financial or otherwise) to whatever parties directly or indirectly associated with the aggressors.

    9) Let us close rank and build alliance between Muslim groups. Support any group that opposes the oppression by lawful means in Islam. Do not limit or narrow down the struggle. Any and all parties that show even tacit approval to the oppression, hold them accountable!

    10) Avoid debates and arguments in issues of genuine khilaf (difference of opinions among ulama mu’tabar). Advise those who are engaged in the never-ending and unproductive debates to refrain from doing so. We need to come united and channel our energy in combating against bigger threats.
