I Am A Victim Of Fake News, Cyberbullies, Says Rosmah Mansor, Wife Of PM Najib Razak

I have been a victim of fake news and cyberbullying, says Rosmah Mansor, wife of Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“There have been a few Facebook account created in my name when I actually don’t have any social media accounts and am not good at social media.

“I don’t even have a smartphone,” said Rosmah at a seminar on cybercrime at Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

She said those who spread fake news aimed to create conflict and discord in Malaysia.

As the country moved towards becoming a “thinking society”, she said Malaysians must be more discerning and not to be influenced by those who use social media to confuse and poison minds.

On cyberbullying, she said an estimated one in four children daily experienced cyber bullying, which could cause emotional stress and  anger, fear, anxiety, and depression.

She added adults, including highly educated professionals, were also vulnerable to cyberbullying.

“Due to the fear of shame, many are afraid to come forward,” said Rosmah.

Between January and June, 379 cases of cyber harassment were reported, according to statistics from CyberSecurity Malaysia, an agency under the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.

The National Council of Women’s Organisations Malaysia (NCWO) and CyberSecurity Malaysia organised the one-day CyberSafe seminar todayl to raise awareness of security, particularly of children and women, on the internet.

The Dewan Rakyat passed the Sexual Offences Against Children Bill in April to better protect children against sexual abuse.

The law came into force in July,

Topics addressed in the seminar today included internet addiction, laws and policy responses to cyber crimes, and psychological and social perspectives of cyber crimes.

  • [Fake News] A US Article Claims Singaporean ISIS Fighter Was Spotted In Tampines And Police Warn Not To Approach

[Fake News] A US Article Claims Singaporean ISIS Fighter Was Spotted In Tampines And Police Warn Not To Approach

In the fake article from Houston News, it wrote about how one of Singaporean most wanted fugitives, Megat Shahdan Abdul Samad, thought to have been at large in Syria, has apparently been spotted in Tampines, a planning area and residential town located in the East Region of Singapore.

“Megat Shahdan, 39 has reportedly been seen at Tampines, with police warning the public not to approach the dangerous bloody ISIS member and also help the police with any vital information to trace his hideout. He is wanted most recently for his alleged links witht the ISIS ranks.”

“It’s the disguises, it’s his criminal entity network and it’s his ability to blend into the community,” the assistant commisioner said of the Megat Shahdan’s ability to avoid apprehension.

“He is a master of disguise so he may jave camouflaged himself in so many appearances.” Megat Shahdan is Singaporean “number one” fugitive, the senior officer added. “This man is dangerous… he has a significant criminal history.”

    Editor’s Note:

It was reported in the news a few days ago that Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam issued a statement confirming that Megat Shahdan is still believed to be in Syria, not in Tampines.

Megat Shahdan left Singapore in 2014 to work in the Middle East, where he is believed to have been radicalised, the ministry said in its statement.

“He subsequently made his way to Syria to join ISIS’ ranks. He is believed to still be with ISIS in Syria.”

  • PALSU: Artikel ‘Presiden Halimah Ditolak Warga Etnis China, Sultan Brunei Ancam Beli Singapura’ Tidak Benar

PALSU: Artikel ‘Presiden Halimah Ditolak Warga Etnis China, Sultan Brunei Ancam Beli Singapura’ Tidak Benar

  • Minister Of Education (Higher Education) Ong Ye Kung Has Been Dubbed As “Fake News” By Netizens

Minister Of Education (Higher Education) Ong Ye Kung Has Been Dubbed As “Fake News” By Netizens

This photo was captured somewhat 18 years ago in 1999 by one Ralph A Clevenger, a professional nature and underwater photographer. According to Clevenger, the image is a composite of four different photos taken at different locations around the planet. The images were then pieced together in Photoshop.

Our Minister Ong Ye Kung who posted that same photo lied saying he’d gotten the photo “from a former colleague, who in turn got it from a rig manager working on an offshore rig at Newfoundland on 12.9.2017″. He added, “The sea was calm, sun directly overhead, and the diver managed to get a perfect shot. It shows how small we humans are compared to the creations of Mother Nature.”

On a separate but related note, in June this year, Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam said that news laws will be introduced to combat the “very serious” nature of fake news. The laws may involve working with online platforms to track and debunk falsehoods.

  • Cherian George: Mainstream Media Cannot Be Trusted With Delivering National News

Cherian George: Mainstream Media Cannot Be Trusted With Delivering National News

Just wasted an hour of my life watching CNA’s Primetime Asia for news of #HouseOfLee.

Not a word. Granted this is an outward-focused programme. Still, they found time for a Singapore-angled segments about a healthcare-related survey and training dogs. The crawler had a few Singapore items, leading with “SCIENCE PARK ONE VISITORS CAN RENT E-SCOOTERS”. But nothing about the story of the year.

This is reminiscent of the national media’s tongue-tied reaction to Lee Hsien Loong’s health scare during last year’s National Day Rally speech.

This won’t do. If we can’t count on our national media during periods of controversy and confusion, what are they there for? Our mainstream editors go through years of socialisation to understand where the OB markers are. In spite of that, if they are not trusted (or don’t trust themselves) to exercise initiative and provide timely news and analysis at a time like this, what’s the point?

We have heard a lot of warnings about fake news lately. The government and mainstream media should realise that if it doesn’t care to allow real news to circulate, their complaints about fake news will ring hollow.
