Sultan Johor Response To Muar’s Muslim-Only Laundrette: ‘Nonsense, This Is Not A Taliban State’

Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has ordered the Muslim-only laundrette in Muar to stop its controversial policy or risk being shut down.

“I cannot accept this nonsense. This is Johor, which belongs to Bangsa Johor and it belongs to all races and faiths. This is a progressive, modern and moderate state.

“This is not a Taliban state and as the head of Islam in Johor, I find this action to be totally unacceptable as this is extremist in nature,” the visibly upset Johor ruler said, as quoted by The Star.

He has since ordered the state Islamic religious affairs committee chairperson Abdul Mutalip Abd Rahim, the religious council and the district council to investigate the matter.

The ruler also confirmed that he had spoken to the state’s mufti, Mohd Tahrir Samsudin, as well as state executive councillor for religion Abd Mutalip Abd Rahim over the matter.

“I want the owner to apologise to me and the people of Johor. He has made Johoreans very angry and embarrassed because this is not the Johor we want.

“The owner has gone against the vision of a united, harmonious, moderate and tolerant Johor. If he still insists on carrying on the Muslim-only practice, he can leave Johor.

“I suggest he set up shop in Afghanistan. His thinking is sick and goes against everything that Johor stands for.”

Confirming that he and his family members were “deeply appalled” by the action of the laundrette owner, the Johor ruler said it would lead to more narrow-minded actions in the name of Islam if such actions were not stopped.

On the owner who, in the wake of the controversy, has since put up a new sign to say it was “Muslim-friendly”, the sultan said: “Don’t try to be clever. It’s still the same. The owner needs to have his brains cleaned up.

“I want to put a stop to such extremism. Extremism has no place in my state. We take pride in being Bangsa Johor and I want to know where the owner of this launderette learn his Islam?

“Islam teaches the faithful to be tolerant and respect other people and faiths,” he said at Istana Bukit Serene yesterday.

Pointing out how mosques in Johor were open to non-Muslims as long as they were properly dressed, the sultan said he could not imagine non-Muslims being banned from entering mosques, saying he was concerned over rising religious extremism.

“I wonder where this launderette owner washes his clothes when he is overseas? Is he saying only the clothes of Muslims are clean and those of non-Muslims are unclean? That’s what he means, I believe.

“From now on, I am directing the state executive council and all the councils to insist that any business owners who carry out such blatant discriminatory practices should have their licences revoked. Don’t mess around with your narrow-minded religious prejudices.”

He said he could not keep quiet on the issue, as if this was allowed to go unnoticed, “then next we will have taxis for only Muslims or non-Muslims”.

He added that he also did not want other races to carry out similar actions.

Pictures of the Muar laundrette went viral last week, when it was reported that a sign on the premises reminded customers that only Muslims were allowed to use its laundry machines.

Johor prince Tunku Idris Sultan Ibrahim had expressed shock over the laundrette’s policy while several others, including Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin and prominent banker Nazir Razak, criticised the move.

The operator of the laundrette, however, denied being a racist and insisted that he only wants to ensure that cleanliness be maintained at all times

  • Islam Keeps Me Calm, Says Johor Princess’ Future Hubby

Islam Keeps Me Calm, Says Johor Princess’ Future Hubby

The Dutch-born future husband of Johor princess Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandaraiah, who embraced Islam in 2015, says the religion keeps him calm.

Dennis Muhammad Abdullah (pic) said he started getting close to Islam in 2014 when he was in Amsterdam.

He said that was when he started to receive advice and views from Muslim friends residing there about the religion. He even asked them to take him to the mosque.

Dennis said he was curious about Islam and wanted to experience how they prayed at mosques, and began learning about the religion in Dutch.

“My heart is open to accepting the religion and I am grateful to Allah for being able to catch up on all the knowledge that has been given to me, without any obstruction.

“Even my parents have given me their support to embrace the religion,” he told the Royal Press Office in an interview at Istana Bukit Serene.

He said he had become a calmer person since embracing the religion.

Dennis, who embraced Islam on May 31, 2015 at Pejabat Kadi Johor Baru, said he was an avid reader of reference materials related to the religion on the Internet besides visiting the mosque frequently to pray.

“After obtaining the blessings of Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar to have his daughter’s hand in marriage, I was told to gain deeper knowledge about the religion,” he added.

Dennis said he began attending Fardhu Ain classes and tried to memorise the shorter surah passages in the Quran since the beginning of the year.

“I also managed to fast throughout the whole month of Ramadan since 2015 and performed the terawih prayers at the mosque,” he added.

Born Dennis Verbaas on May 1, 1989, in Lisse, a town near Amsterdam, he said he had also learned Jawi.

“I was advised by religious experts not to rush into the religion and take it slow to gain deeper knowledge,” he said, adding that he would take heed of the advice to become a good Muslim.

Tunku Tun Aminah and Dennis are set to marry on Monday.

The public can follow the royal wedding “live” from Istana Besar on video screens at Dataran Bandaraya and the Johor Baru City Council building.

  • Animal Father Videos Own 21 Year Old Daughter Bathing, Jailed 4 Months

Animal Father Videos Own 21 Year Old Daughter Bathing, Jailed 4 Months

A man who recorded a video of his 21-year-old daughter bathing was jailed for four months on Monday (July 31).

The 48-year-old Malaysian pleaded guilty to insulting the modesty of his biological daughter in the toilet of a flat in Toh Yi Drive in July 2016.

At the time, the accused and his daughter were living in the same rented room.

Sometime in July last year, the complainant, now 22, was bathing when she saw a black mobile phone tied to the pipe below the basin inside the toilet.

She removed the phone and saw that it was in video recording mode. She stopped the recording and played back the video, which captured her nude body as she was bathing.

She then checked the phone and saw a few other videos capturing the accused’s face, and him adjusting the camera’s angle.

When confronted, the accused admitted that he had been doing this for the past two weeks.

She angrily deleted all the videos from the phone and returned it to him.

She subsequently left to stay with her colleague.

The accused admitted that he recorded the video for personal viewing. He had about 20 other similar clips of his daughter bathing in his phone but said that he had misplaced the device.

On April 5 this year at about 3.10am, officers responded to a message at Block 840 Jurong West Street 81 and arrested the accused for attempted suicide.

A second charge of using threatening words and behaviour towards his daughter by saying that he wanted to jump down while having his arms and left leg on the parapet was taken into consideration during sentencing.

  • Sultanah Johor: Show Equal Respect To Non-Muslim

Sultanah Johor: Show Equal Respect To Non-Muslim

PETALING JAYA: Muslims must show the same respect to their fellow Malaysians of other faiths, as given to them, says Permaisuri of Johor Raja Zarith Sofia Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah.

In a Facebook posting, she said Muslims in Malaysia are very lucky because they do not know what it is like to be part of a minority group.

“Those of us who have studied or lived abroad know what it feels like to be a minority, and we learn to adapt. At the same time, we see the kindness and the acceptance of those who are Christians, Jews, or of other faiths, when we are in their countries.

“I remember seeing photos of Zaharah Othman, the NST London correspondent, at a church, wearing her hijab. And she’s also told me how she was offered to perform her prayers in churches,” she said.

She also shared how her eldest son Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ismail, when he was leaving India after ending his service with the Indian army, was taken to the army mosque by his fellow officers.

“They were Hindus but they covered their heads with their handkerchiefs, and took their shoes off.

“We Muslims must show the same respect to our fellow Malaysians,” she said.
