    Khoo Teck Puat Hospital: Sister Is Not Family, Get Out Of A&E Room

    Dear A.S.S. Editors

    Here’s the story about my terrible experience at KTPH. My Brother was rushed to the A&E at KTPH due to high fever, severe vomiting and chest pains. We arrived at the Hospital at 4am. While waiting, my Father asked the nurse “around what time can my Son see the doctor?” And the nurse simply glared at him and walked away.

    My Brother was still vomiting non stop and had hyperpehia due to severe pains. Did X-ray and blood test. Doctors couldn’t diagnose the problem and suspect that it is food poisoning and said that maybe can be discharged at 4pm.

    At 9am, my Brother was finally warded to the EDTU and put on IV drip. My brother’s right hands were ice cold so we asked the nurse, and the nurse said “you touch my hand, my hand also very cold.” laughed and left. So we had no idea what was going on and we waited patiently for the results.

    Finally at around 5pm, results came out. Doctor say it might be food poisoning but it cannot be confirmed. What? Then, proceeded to say that his white blood count is too high and have to do blood test again. Cannot be discharged and have to stay until tomorrow morning for further observation.

    At around 8pm the doctor said that the test results are out, the blood count has been reduced slightly but not enough to be discharged. And the x-ray shows that my Brother’s left shoulder is dislocated and have to do second x-ray. What?

    Brother was then wheeled to do the second x-ray and then the x-ray was cancelled because another doctor said it wasn’t necessary because it is just “flexible joints” and my Brother can be discharged. And that we had to wait 1 hour to get the MC and the discharge summary.

    While waiting, A&E patient relation associate Mohd Yusof came in and suddenly asked my Mother if she’s the parent. Then he asked me “who are you?” I said I’m the Sister. He said “Sister is not family, you get out” So I said “huh? Sister is family. We are waiting for him to be discharged, he will be discharged soon.” And he said “no, Sister is not family, you get out. doctor can just talk to the Mother”

    So I had to wait outside because apparently “Sister is not family” at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Absolutely ridiculous. Terrible terrible experience at KTPH and will never go back again.

    Man In Khoo Teck Puat Shooting Faces Two More Charges

    The man accused of firing three rounds from a police revolver at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital was charged with two more offences on Monday.

    Muhammad Iskandar Sa’at, 23, faces the death penalty for allegedly discharging three bullets from a .38 inch calibre Taurus revolver with intent to cause physical injury to Staff Sergeant Mohammad Sadli Razali, 31, on June 20 between 7.03pm and 7.06pm.

    He is now charged with hitting Mr Sadli multiple times with t-baton and with a metal pole used for securing an IV drip at 6.53pm and 7pm the same day, with intent to deter the policeman from discharging his duty.

    The other fresh charge states that he tried to escape from police custody after he was arrested for stealing a lorry.

    The prosecution applied for him to be remanded at a medical centre for psychiatric evaluation.

    His family members have instructed lawyer Shashi Nathan to act for him. Mr Nathan’s colleague, Ms Tania Chin, appeared for him in court on Monday.

    Muhammad Iskandar will return to court on July 20.

    The maximum punishment for causing hurt to a public servant is seven years’ jail, a fine and caning. The punishment for attempting to escape from legal custody is one year’s jail and a fine.

    23 Year Old Muhammad Iskandar Sa’at Charged With Unlawful Discharge Of Firearm At Khoo Teck Phuat

    A 23-year-old Singaporean who allegedly snatched the revolver of a police officer at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital on Saturday has been charged under the Arms Offences Act.

    Muhammad Iskandar Sa’at had allegedly tried to escape from the hospital. In the struggle that ensued, three shots were fired and the 31-year-old policeman was wounded in his left thumb and right foot.

    He had allegedly fired three rounds from a .38 inch calibre Taurus revolver that belonged to policeman Mohammad Sadli Razali sometime between 7.03pm and 7.06pm, with the intent to cause physical injury.

    Under Section 4 (1) of the Arms Offences Act, any person who is convicted of using or attempting to use any firearm faces the death penalty. The case will be mentioned again on June 29.

    71 Year Old Woman Leg Stuck Between Bus Doors At Marsiling, Injured After Being Dragged

    71-year-old Madam Ang Kim Seng was alighting from SMRT bus 903 when her right leg got stuck between the doors and was subsequently dragged along the road.

    This incident occurred on Mar 18, at about 8.45am, when she was alighting from a bus stop near Block 23 Marsiling Drive, according to Shin Min Daily News.

    Madam Ang recounted in an interview with the Chinese newspaper:

    “I was the only one to alight at that time.

    “I pressed the bell, the bus reached my stop, and I tapped my EZ-link.”

    She stretched her right leg out to step out of the bus, and before her leg touched the ground, the bus doors closed.

    “I lost my balance and fell backwards. The bus started moving off.

    “I immediately shouted loudly for help.”

    She was inside the bus, but the bus doors had closed on her right leg and it was being dragged outside.

    A passenger who was also on the bus at that time said, “The bus drove for about 1-metre before it stopped. Many people were crowding near the door.”

    Blood could be spotted flowing non-stop from the elderly woman’s 10-cm long gash.

    Madam Ang sustained injuries to her right foot, right elbow, and head.

    She was sent to Khoo Teck Puat hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

    Her daughter shared, “My mother’s wound has an infection.

    “She’s currently being monitored by the hospital, and might need to undergo a skin graft to cover up the wound.”

    PRC Nurse At KTPH Showed No Empathy For Family By Claiming Audibly That A Patient Was Gonna Die

    Dear CEO of KTPH Hospital

    I received your service acknowledgment letter. And regrets i am not accepting your apologies for the incident which had happened to myself on 30 December 2014.

    The past 17 days of my late mum being hospitalized in the hospital indeed had been very traumatizing for us as a family in whole. I had rushed all the way from abroad to be with my mum and stood vigil by her daily on every morning at 0600 hrs till late nights without fail. The hope of seeing someone you love dearly to get better made me brushed away all hecticness, jet lags and all other challenges i faced during these critical period. Mind you, i have to go through the emotional roller coaster and also taking care of my 6 mth old infant at night and my daddy too. Nevertheless faith and pray kept me and my family together albeit all these.

    1. On 30 December as i was in the process of getting my dad the family room next to ICU ward, one of your nurse (a china national) by the name of Cong from ICU unit ward answered a phone call in my presence at the ward’s reception. She probably didnt know i was related to patient she was talking about which is my late mum.

    Someone from a control centre called her up and she can cheekily answered in mandarin, “na ge patient ha yao se liao” which is clearly translated in English as “that patient going to die already.” These comments was relayed without abit of remorse and not an inch of empathy.

    Here we are going through grievances, and your “foreign talent nurse” who had been assigned to “nurse” my late mum passed such a remarks.

    A. Dont your nurses know of words taboo especially when working in such environment? The words i.e. die, mati, se is very very sensitive especially for a patient or their family be it in at any ward. And what made it worst, when my mum is fighting for her life.
    B. How can i be really sure your nurses who had been nursing my m been competence enough to handle my mum for the past 17 days?
    C. Your foreign talent nurse passed such remarks bluntly without considering the presence of member of public?

    3. How i can be sure that she or the nurses there had been compassionate and dedicated their service to the patients without being racists?

    2. On 24 Dec 2014, it was also brought to my attention that my family members had witnessed my mum who was in coma suffered blood loss while the nurses did a procedure on her. There was a pool of blood on the bed and under the bed. When i came, i saw my late mum’s hand between fingers were all covered with blood. When questioned we were told that bandage was not “tight” enuff and nurses had to rush to another patient at a nearby bed for resuscitation. My mum temperature dropped tremendously to 33 degrees for the night. Please iron my doubts below.

    A. Does that made my mum condition less important, hence she can suffer these lost of blood?
    B. If your nurses are competent why the assigned nurse did not ensure that my mum was well taken care first and then proceed with the resuscitation?
    C. How qualified are your nurses to handle such situations? Is there any contigency plannings when hansling of critical emergency in an ICU ward?

    I am truly purturbed with these incidences and very very traumatized when i hear someone being admitted to the same hospital. Until this very moment as i am writing these, i cant help recalling the words your nurse had muttered and the sight of my late mum’s blood.

    This is mind depressing for me and i hate to remind myself that things could have been better handled.
