    Discrimination Against Muslimahs Wearing Tudung Is The Number 1 Factor Inhibiting Them From The Nursing Profession

    AsSalaam’alaikum!

    There is a convoluted reasoning when it comes to the tudung. It is said that those who are calling for the end to the discrimination against tudung clad women are putting pressures upon Muslimah nurses such that these nurses are put into a spotlight thereby somehow such talk of tudung has disadvantanged and discouraged them from doing their work. The reasoning further goes to say that nursing is fardhu kifayah and thus must be encouraged.

    It is as if those calling for a stop to the ongoing discrimination are somehow at fault of inhibiting a fardhu kifayah which would benefit the society of which nursing is a prime example.

    Such a reasoning is flawed and can only be thought of by a muslim PAP cadre member who is trying to be too smart by half. Such reasoning ignores the fact that in the first place, it is the discrimination against muslimahs wearing tudung which is the number 1 factor inhibiting them from the profession which is a fardhu kifayah. Again to be clear, the fact is that those who promote and enforce the current policy of discrimination not allowing muslimahs to don the tudung are the ones inhibiting fardhu kifayah. Not to mention such discrimination against women belongs to the Dark Ages of Europe not the 21st century anywhere in the world.

    The fact is that the ongoing discrimination against women due to them choosing to wear the tudung is the policy denying them all sorts of working opportunities and professions. Such discrimination is totally indefensible. And yet some foolish people persist in their stupidity and indeed they are actually encouraging transgression against the Islamic prescription of covering the aurah. Their argument is invalid and exposes them as defiant of the Commands of Allah swt and the teachings of our beloved Prophet s.a.w.

    And as for the Muslim men who make such convoluted arguments and therefore allow such discrimination to continue, their hypocrisy lies in the fact that their own wives don the tudung in public.

    We can gladly say that our Minister Masagos Zulkifli has scored several political points this week (claps for him) and that he will never be the people’s choice or at least the Malay Muslim community’s as the EP of Singapore. Nope, out of the question, never gonna happen. We are disappointed and you have shamed the community. However, we thank Allah SWT for showing us your true colours. We pray not to be misled by you again.

    When you accused WP’s Faisal Manap of attempting to cause division in Singapore’s social cohesion by raising the issue of hijab again, you also made an indirect ad hominem towards him by guilt of association using a picture taken of Faisal Manap and Zulfikar Shariff years ago in a mosque. So what is the Minister implying, that it was tantamount to being radical? Anyone who has a picture taken with Zulfikar must be put under suspicion? That is just low, way low even for minister. Then what about you being in the same picture with Netanyahu or gracing his presence?? Lagi worst kan.

    Instead of character assassinating our MP who is merely representing the minority Malay community in his ward, why don’t you tell him what you can do for the people. A religious debate in parliament where both sides are showing what they have done for an issue. Not one raise, the other sweep it away. Or has it been cast in stone that you’ve washed your hands off us and our issues, Mr Masagos? 🙁

    Fatwa Saudi Bolehkan Wanita ‘Tok Kadi’ Jalankan Pernikahan

    Percaya atau tidak, wanita boleh menjalankan pernikahan.

    Demikian menurut fatwa yang dikeluarkan seorang anggota Majlis Masyaikh Arab Saudi, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Manea.

    Beliau memberitahu Okaz Daily bahawa tugas itu sekadar mencatat dokumen kontrak perkahwinan dan “jika Kementerian Kehakiman meluluskannya, maka tidak ada sebarang halangan dari segi undang-undang, lapor laman Arab News.

    Untuk melayakkan diri bagi mendapatkan lesen, pemohon perlu mempunyai tatasusila yang baik dan tiada rekod jenayah, mendapat sokongan daripada dua ulama Islam dan berusia 25 tahun ke atas.

    Ini bukanlah fatwa pertama yang dikeluarkan oleh Al-Manea yang menyebelahi kaum wanita.

    Pada bulan September lalu, beliau berkata wanita-wanita adalah penjaga diri mereka sendiri dan mempunyai hak untuk menguruskan semua ehwal berkaitan diri mereka kecuali dalam perkahwinan, lapor Arab News.

    Peguam Nojoud Qasim memberitahu Arab News tiada halangan dari segi undang-undang bagi wanita untuk menjalankan pernikahan.

    Terdapat permintaan bagi kerjaya itu di kalangan wanita Saudi “jika mereka diberi pelulang”, menurut Qasim seperti yang ditukil Arab News.

    Commentary: Imam Fined, Amos Yee Received Jail Term, Pastor Got Warning. Why The Difference?

    Salam admin,

    I am a bit relieved the case of the Imam’s controversial remarks has been resolved in a manner that is amicable to all parties. Everyone should get their just desserts for the mistakes that they have committed, and now they got it.

    But I’m not saying that all were grave mistakes though particularly for the Imam. I don’t think he meant to incite violence against Jews or Christians in general. It probably stemmed from indulgence of religious rhetoric that has become habitual among some unenlightened preachers, and perhaps their environment.

    However in times where the threat of terrorism is consuming the world, what he explicitly said triggered what we least want to happen in Singapore – racial disharmony. Sadly, such incident shows how fragile Singapore’s social cohesion is.

    With that said, how is this case different from what happened to Amos Yee several months ago? Why did he receive a heavier punishment for a similar ‘crime’ he committed? Oh i sure you know what he did to purposely wound the feelings of Muslims and Christian.

    The difference is that Amos was given prison sentence for intending to wound religious feelings whereas the Imam was fined for making offensive remarks against Christians and Jews. Can the government enlighten the people what ‘crime’ constitutes a jail term and what for a fine.

    Additionally, not many people remember this but 7 years ago, a Senior Pastor from the Lighthouse Evangelism independent church made insensitive, disparaging remarks about Buddhism. He was derogatory about Buddhist concepts like karma and nirvana but he wasn’t charged. In fact, all Rony Tan had to do was to apologise for his troubles. What he got in the end was just a warning from the government.

    Now the burning question is why was the imam fined and yet Amos received a jail term and the pastor got a warning?

    I am glad the investigation over this issue is over and MHA had sought the views of MUIS and PERGAS. It is not an easy issue to find an outcome that satisfies everyone. I feel sad that the Imam of mosque, where I do my Friday prayers regularly, is being send back but, as a multiracial community, a strong signal must be given that there is no place for any statement (intended or otherwise) that can sow seeds of doubt in other communities. No doubt this case had evoked strong emotive reaction from many fellow muslims because the complainant is a muslim convert that many disagree (or even hate?) for his controversial views of Islam in the past and there are calls for stronger action to be taken against him for being ‘kurang ajar’ at our revered and beloved Mufti. Despite what he said about the Mufti or MUIS, personally I do not think it is necessary for further action against that person because in this age of social media, anyone can be condemned or ridiculed (just ask any politicians). I think we all can distinguish the truth and let Allah be the judge for his actions and thoughts. I recalled what I was taught that Allah, the Most Gracious and Most Merciful, can forgive your sins with him but not the sins you commit to others. We also have a well-meaning professor who expresses his unhappiness with the convert but unfortunately, not knowing the full context, made some postings which can also be intrepreted as supporting the iman’s view. All involved have apologised and I wish there is closure for all especially for their families that may have been under a lot of stress and for our community that has been partly torn apart. Let’s us heal from this episode.
