Body Found In Water Beside Sengkang Riverside Park; Family Of Victim Had Posted About Him Missing Since Yesterday

A body was found in the water beside Sengkang Riverside Park on Friday (Sept 29) morning.

Reader Elsie Soh told The Straits Times that her husband was passing by the area at 7.20am when he saw some police officers.

When The Straits Times arrived at the scene just before 9.30am, a tent used by police to cover bodies was placed along a cycling and jogging track across the canal from Sengkang Riverside Park, near Sengkang Sports Centre.

A police cordon stretching about 300m had been set up.

Ms Joy Perez, 34, a housewife living nearby, said she was turned away from the cordon while jogging at about 8am and had to make a big detour into the residential areas which are a few hundred metres away.  Other track users were being turned away as well.

On Facebook, it turns out that the family had been searching for the victim since last night. They posted online to appeal for information on the victim who was last seen at about 8pm and was in the vicinity of 281B Sengkang East Avenue.

One James Ang on Facebook wrote, “My brother is missing since yesterday 8pm. Last seen yesterday 8plus @ 281B Sengkang East Avenue wearing black shirt and navy bermudas. Please help to share around and PM if any saw him anywhere.. appreciated all of your help as we are really worried about him.”

  • AMAS Says It Did Not Sanction Celebrity Fight; Professional Fights Not Under Their Purview

AMAS Says It Did Not Sanction Celebrity Fight; Professional Fights Not Under Their Purview

The Amateur Muaythai Association (Singapore), or Amas, said on Monday (Sept 25) that it had not signed off on the celebrity muay thai fight that resulted in the death of bodybuilder Pradip Subramaniam last Saturday.

In a statement to The Straits Times, Amas’ president Mervyn Tan said that professional fights do not come under his organisation’s purview.

“(We have) no authority and did not sanction the event (the Asia Fighting Championship). The event was sanctioned by the World Muaythai Council (WMC), which presides over professional fights worldwide,” Tan stated.

“For us, Amas, (we) only handle amateur fights. I would also like to say we are saddened by the loss for the family.”

He added that from what Amas understood, the celebrity fight was “not a real bout as it was not even programmed by WMC”.

ST understands that Amas’ involvement in the event was limited to providing technical support in the form of judges, facilities and its own fighters for the 13-fight card.

Asia Fighting Championship founder and chief executive officer Sasidharan Unnithan had previously said that standards and safety protocols set by the WMC were followed before the fights, including the provision of WMC-certified referees and a medical team that certified all fighters fit.

A 23-year-old male motorcyclist died in a hit-and-run accident on Seletar Expressway (SLE) on Sunday (Sept 10) afternoon.

Police were alerted to the accident, which occurred in the direction of Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE), at 1.33pm.

The motorcyclist was taken unconscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said he had suffered from traumatic arrest – which meant his heart stopped beating – and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered en route to the hospital.

The hospital was alerted to be on standby to receive him. He later succumbed to his injuries.

The Straits Times understands he suffered a head injury and a fractured left arm.

His pillion rider, a 22-year-old man, was conscious when taken to KTPH, and had abrasions on his left limb.

    Police investigations are ongoing.

At 1.59pm, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) tweeted about the accident, saying there was “congestion” until the Woodlands Avenue 2 exit, and that motorists should avoid the second and third lanes.

There was still heavy traffic as of 4.01pm.
