Bazaar Geylang Stallholders Must Stop Monkey-See, Monkey-Do Mentality, Create Fresh Products

How do people expect to succeed when doing business when they are just monkey see, monkey do? I have visited bazaar at Geylang, Tampines and Woodlands, and no guesses what the trend for this year. Drinks (particularly Thai milk tea) served in BIG cups and BIG sotongs. Then one do ondeh-ondeh, all do ondeh-ondeh. So if everyone is selling similar things, how do you make money?

Isn’t the point of business is to sell something that sets you apart from your competitors? The selling point of YOUR product. But it is so typical to see one person doing well, so let’s all sell the same things.

And then you wonder why the watermelon volcano is doing well… and no guesses that it is not Malay owned. Hmmmm.

  • Don’t Complain About Food At Geylang Bazaar

Don’t Complain About Food At Geylang Bazaar

Why are people complaining about the food at Geylang Bazaar? It has never been worth going since the last time I went there in 2010.

The food is getting more expensive but the quality is getting worse. I can’t blame the sellers there because I understand the rental is extortionate, food prices are going up and their profit margins are razor thin these past few years.

If you decide to bother going there, it’s caveat emptor. Those who don’t bother about wanting to be seen there (ie. step handsome or jambu) have already taken to ordering our Hari Raya provisions online.

I pity the sellers there. Just hawk your wares on the Internet. There will still be plenty of customers, believe me. Makcik yang tak pandai pakai Internet ke Facebook, sila belajar. Gi tanya anak ke sedara yang ikut trend anak muda hari ini.

All in all, the bazaars at Geylang, Tampines and Woodlands are hot, cramped, dirty and ridiculously expensive places to shop.

The experience is priceless, for some. For everything else, there’s Mastercard.

Malik is buying stuff for Hari Raya.
Malik knows the bazaars are horrible. He doesn’t go there and complain about the trip once he gets home.

Malik uses the Internet and his Mastercard. Malik knows how to use bank transfers.

Malik is smart. Be like Malik.

  • Recipe For Delicious Homemade Dengdeng

    Recipe For Delicious Homemade Dengdeng

Everytime when it’s Ramadan, people will head to Geylang Serai bazaar to purchase Deng-deng. I find that they’re just expensive and not that great anyways as they’re always thick and soft. So since my family loves Deng-deng so much and requested I made it from scratch for them, I thought why not and here they are… Surprise!!

I want to share my recipe with you all in case you want to try it out yourself. Trust me, it’s worthed it.

I used ground beef -2kg and managed to get 15 packs in total.

    For the record, I do not use any measurements in all my cooking. I just put according to judgement and tasting till I’m satisfied they’re good to go. So be prepared that the ingredients I provided below have no measurements. So for the mix, I used;

    1. Light soya sauce
    2. Fish sauce
    3. Sesame oil
    4. Thai sweet chilli sauce
    5. Ground black pepper
    6. Piri-Piri spices
    7. Honey
    8. Fine granulated sugar
*combine them well and follow the instructions as indicated in the pictures below.

    Step 1

Step 1 – Final mix and marinate for 4 hours in the fridge

    Step 2

Step 2 – Place a scoopful in a plastic bag and using the rolling pin to flatten the meat to the thickness of your desire

    Step 3

Step 3 – This is the final look. Put them in the freezer for a night

    Step 4

Step 4 – Grilled them in the over at 160 degress for a total of 20 mins. Grilled at 10 mins for each side. Spreading a mixture of oil and sugar water to get the gloss. Leave to rest for 10 mins once it’s out of the oven. Here’s the deng-deng ready to be devoured!!

    -sharing is caring-
