DPP Chief Benjamin Pwee: Leaked Bishan-Toa Payoh Poster ‘One Of Many Drafts’

A mock-up of an election poster for the joint opposition team standing in Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) has prompted talk that the line-up for the ward has finally been confirmed, but Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chief Benjamin Pwee on Thursday (Aug 27) maintained that a final decision has yet to be made.

The poster circulating features two DPP members — Mr Pwee and party chairman Mohamad Hamim Aliyas — and three Singapore People’s Party (SPP) members, Mr Law Kim Hwee, Mr Abdillah Zamzuri and Mr Bryan Long. The SPP logo was also on the poster along with the tagline, “We hear You. We speak for You”.

The three SPP members are new to politics, while Mr Pwee and Mr Hamim contested in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in the 2011 General Election under the SPP umbrella.

Responding to queries from TODAY, Mr Pwee said: “We have many, many different draft posters with different combinations of candidates because SPP hasn’t confirmed their candidates for the five-man team. We will leave it to SPP to officially announce the five-man team under the SPP banner on Nomination Day.”

Asked if the parties agreed on the slate at the Elections Department on Thursday, SPP chairman Lina Chiam said the team has been formed, but declined to elaborate.

“The team will be as strong, if not stronger than the previous one,” she said, referring to the team SPP fielded for the General Election in 2011.

The two parties had agreed to jointly contest the five-member GRC under the SPP banner after each party initially indicated an interest to field their own teams, potentially setting up a three-cornered fight.

Mr Pwee has been introducing potential candidates for the team, while the two parties have put out conflicting messages about the make-up of the combined slate at separate walkabouts they held. Mrs Chiam has expressed preference that the SPP holds three of the five spots on the team, while Mr Pwee has said the best five should fill the positions.

Mr Pwee was part of SPP chief Chiam See Tong’s team in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC in 2011, but left the party one year later with Mr Hamim. The team took 43.07 per cent of the votes in 2011.

The DPP-SPP team will go up against the People’s Action Party’s team made up of incumbents Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and Senior Minister of State for Transport and Finance Josephine Teo, and new faces Mr Chee Hong Tat, Mr Chong Kee Hiong and Mr Saktiandi Supaat.

Nomination Day is on Sep 1.

  • Man Loses Part Of Leg, Lives In Pain After Traffic Accident

Man Loses Part Of Leg, Lives In Pain After Traffic Accident

He was riding home with his girlfriend after picking up some goods for his shop when he suddenly saw a taxi hurtling towards him.

The taxi crashed into his motorcycle and he fell onto the road. The taxi then ran over his right leg and crushed it, leaving him writhing in unbearable pain.

As a result of the accident on July 15 last year, Mr Quek Choon Hock, 61, had to have the lower part of his right leg amputated, and still lives in pain.

He now uses a prosthetic leg and a crutch to get around, but even a short walk can be excruciating.

On Wednesday, the taxi driver, Ishak Ismail, 59, was jailed for two weeks after pleading guilty to one charge of causing grievous hurt by acting negligently as to endanger human life.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years.

But Mr Quek and his girlfriend, Ms Chua Bee Toon, 54, who was also injured in the accident, were still upset with Ishak for putting them in their current situation.

PRC Couple Brings Outside Food To McDonald’s, Creates Ruckus When Confronted

I was at Serangoon Nex McDonald’s with my friends yesterday 26th August. And I saw this PRC couple eating outside food at McDonald’s. When confronted by the manager, they weren’t apologetic or embarrassed about eating outside food. Kudos to the manager who handled the situation calmly when he was shouted by the rude lady! They even challenged the manager to call the police! OMG!

Please share this video to everyone and make them famous. How shameless and arrogant can they be?! These people really bring shame to their people!

Daniel Goh Lodges Police Report Over ‘Poison Pen Letter’

Workers’ Party (WP) candidate Daniel Goh has lodged a police report over the “poison pen letter” that was sent to media on Thursday night (Aug 28).

The e-mail had alleged that Mr Goh, 42, a sociologist, had an affair with one of his ex-students at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

In a Facebook post uploaded Friday morning, Mr Goh said he lodged the report at Serangoon Neighbourhood Police Centre.

Hello everyone, again, I just lodged a police report on the poison pen letter at Serangoon NPC, a short walk down from…

Posted by Daniel Goh 吴佩松 on Thursday, 27 August 2015

Mr Goh, who is married, had already refuted the allegations in a post on Facebook on Thursday night.

In the earlier post, he “question(ed) the timing of the poison pen letter coming immediately after the candidate introduction”.

In a text message on Thursday night, Dr Goh told The New Paper that his wife had told him that such an incident was “bound to happen”, and called it “gutter politics”.

Dr Goh and his 39-year-old wife have a three-year-old son.

In his latest post, he thanked his supporters for rallying around him.

“I am not a singular person anymore, never was, but now I stand on your giant shoulders; you all give me spiritual strength,” he wrote.

“Let’s move on to the issues at hand.”
