Damanhuri Abas: Lee Family Feud Throws Up Questions Over The State Of Democracy And Power In Singapore

The revelation from the public statement released by both Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Lee Wei Ling vindicated what most opposition parties had tirelessly expounded over the last few years. Some had gone to jail or faced severe fines for having the guts to speak the truth to power.

There is something terribly wrong with our democracy when the ruling party abused the system to benefit and perpetuate their hold on power. Freedom of the press and election process are key essentials of democracy. Instead policies were driven to entrench their position advocating the virtue of one party rule and even ideas such as natural aristocracy became currency when it is clearly against the meritocratic principle we cherish as a nation. Transparency for a long while has gone down the drain of convenient excuses for safeguarding commercial interest when it is really about gross conflicts of interest. Cronyism and nepotism have taken over selections and appointments and not the best for the job based on merits, experience and integrity.

The sad truth is that, over the years with almost absolute control on power with overwhelming majority in parliament, no one can stop them anymore and they can make any changes to policies or even the constitution any way they want. Thus the people’s only hope is for an intervention that comes from within to break the absolute control on information. The last straw being the constitutional amendments to the Elected Presidency and the further changes to remove any powers to the Elected President into the hands of non-elected presidential advisory committee.

What just happened is the culmination of years of suppression that the government had full control of with no check and balance on them. Now the people must respond to this development by not ignoring and merely placing this as a family feud. That may have been the trigger but the statement raised much more profound and pertinent gross concerns on our democracy, abuse of power, conflicts of interest and undermining of public institutions.

The people must know the truth.

  • Netizen: Lee Hsien Loong Needs To Be Answerable To Public On Accusations By Siblings

Netizen: Lee Hsien Loong Needs To Be Answerable To Public On Accusations By Siblings

No, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, we need answers/ specific clarifications (if possible, independent inquiry) into these allegations:

    1) that you used your position as prime minister to obtain documents (Deed of Gift) given to the ministry via Lawrence Wong. (abuse of powers)

    2) that your wife, Ho Ching, has ‘pervasive influence’ that ‘extends well beyond her job purview’ despite not being an elected official or govt official. (conflict of interest and overreach of power)

    3) that you made your personal lawyer, Lucien Wong, the Attorney-General in Jan 2017. (favouritism/ nepotism)

    4) that you monitored your two siblings so much that Lee Hsien Yang, your own brother, wants to leave the country. (threatening/ police state)

  • Local Boys Rap To Remind Singaporeans To Stop Abusing Ofo Bikes

Local Boys Rap To Remind Singaporeans To Stop Abusing Ofo Bikes

By now, it is unusual if we do not hear or read about another ofo bike being abused by Singaporeans who cannot seem to fathom the concept of sharing.

Stomp has compiled countless reports of ofo bikes being damaged, dismantled, painted and kept by users in their own homes.

Ofo is one of three companies offering bicycle sharing services for the public here.

Netizens have slammed the selfish behaviour of these users who are not working to make the concept work with others.

Now, a group of boys have come up with a catchy rap about the ofo bike.

Stomper Fauzi alerted us to the video posted on Twitter.

Although they obviously came up with the fun ditty for laughs, the rap has some good points.

Titled, “Mencari ofo” or Looking for ofo, it starts off with how the boy rapping rides the ofo to school.

He says that the yellow hue of the bike is easy to spot but unfortunately, people like to throw it.

He gets a headache from trying to find an ofo bike because they are being kept at staircase landings and even inside homes instead of at accessible public areas.

He then ends by rapping how he searches for the elusive ofo bikes until the break of dawn.

The rap has garnered over 2,100 retweets and 1,100 likes so far.

Cat Gruesomely Murdered At Bukit Batok, Police Report Made

Twitter user harleen shared disturbing photos of her murdered cat along the HDB stair well at Bukit Batok West Ave 7. She claimed that a neighbour could be responsible for this heinous act. The cat allegedly had its head smashed against the wall and threw down the stairs from the trauma at the right side of its head.

“My cat was murdered at Bukit Batok West Avenue 7. We suspect that my cat somehow sneaked out of my house and a neighbor smashed his head and threw him down the stairs. There’s a trauma at the right side of his head where most of the blood is coming from. He’s only 10 months fucking old i swear to god whoever who did this to Dan i hope you fucking rot in hell.

honestly we’re in shock but they never dare to venture out of the house. the furthest they went is always at our shoe rack. my cats aren’t ever a nuisance. they stay in my bloody house and never go around meeting other strays or even disrupting other homes

update: so I’ve met up with the police and ava officer and while the police checks the cctv, we’ve hand over Dan’s body to the awa for post mortem to figure out his cause of death. we’ve ruled out poisoning and falling from my house window as i live on the 10th storey. currently undergoing investigation and I’ve handed over my cat for post mortem to find out cause of death

The police have arrested a 46-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman for an offence of public nuisance.

In a statement issued early Wednesday (April 26) morning, the police said they received reports on Sunday regarding a couple who had allegedly used offensive language and force against a 76-year-old man at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market & Hawker Centre.

The couple’s identities were established and they were arrested on Tuesday. Police investigations are still ongoing.
