    50 Aussie-Style BBQs Across The Heartlands On Jun 28

    Come Jun 28, the heartlands — from Jurong to Tampines — will be alight with 50 Aussie-style barbecues, as part of the Australian High Commission’s celebrations to mark Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, as well as 50 years of friendship between the two nations.

    The barbecues will be held at 22 sites across the island, including Toa Payoh Central Community Club, Jem Shopping Mall, Block 516 Tampines Central 7, Punggol East Road and Haji Lane.

    About 500 Australian volunteers will be firing up the grills to serve 10,000 beef and lamb steaks which weigh 1,000kg in total, about the weight of an average car.

    The event will bring Australians and Singaporeans together “to share our mutual love of good food and a chat”, said Australian High Commissioner Philip Green in a statement announcing the barbecue locations.

    The 50 BBQs event is the last of Australia’s 50 Bridges arts and community programme to celebrate SG50. Singaporeans can also take part in the 50 Bridges photo contest where they can submit up to 20 photos of either 50 Walls artworks or a 50 BBQs event, capturing the Australian-Singaporean relationship in a creative way.

    They stand to win a pair of return business class tickets to Melbourne.

    Australian Woman Dead, Fell From 60th Floor Of Swissotel The Stamford

    An Australian woman in her 50s was found dead at the parapet of the second floor of Swissotel The Stamford today (May 30), Channel NewsAsia understands.

    The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a case of fall from height at the hotel at about 2pm. An ambulance and a fire engine were dispatched to the scene, it added.

    According to SCDF, the woman was pronounced dead upon arrival of the paramedics.

    Channel NewsAsia also understands that she fell from the 60th floor of the building. No foul play is suspected.

    Police are currently investigating.

    Australian Mother Abandons Children To Join ISIS In Syria

    Jasmina Milovanov left her two children with a babysitter earlier this month in Sydney, Australia, saying she was on her way to pick up a new car. She never came back.

    The 26-year-old single mother is now believed to be in Syria and to have joined the Islamic State militant group, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday.

    Milovanov’s ex-husband said that he received a text message from her on May 3 while he was in Turkey, telling him to return home to Australia and that she was in Syria, reported The Daily Telegraph. The mother is also believed to have written a now-deleted post on Facebook saying that she was in “Sham,” using an Arabic term for Syria.

    Milovanov’s mother told Australia’s Network 10 television station that her daughter hadn’t mentioned anything about going to Syria, saying, “I even saw her the week before and she was alright. Probably she is brainwashed. She is so young and naive.”

    Milovanov was also friends on Facebook with Zehra Duman, a woman known in Australia to be a recruiter who finds brides for IS extremists,Agence France Presse reported.

    Milovanov’s children are ages 5 and 7. She converted to Islam in her late teens,according to The Daily Telegraph.

    Australia’s counterterrorism minister, Michael Keenan, said Tuesday that authorities are currently monitoring the reports of Milovanov’s recruitment and flight.

    Foreign Minister Julie Bishop commented on Milovanov’s case in Parliament on Tuesday, saying she was “deeply pessimistic about the fate of this apparently troubled young woman.”

    The disappearance of Milovanov comes as Australia is planning to pass a law that would strip citizenship from people suspected of terrorist activities, even if they are not convicted of any crime. The proposed law would only apply to those who possess dual nationality, so as not to leave anyone completely stateless.

    Australia has between 100 to 250 citizens fighting for militant groups in Syria and Iraq, according to a January report from The International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence.

    SAF officer excels in Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) Undergraduate Course.

    LTA Mohamad Fahrul Bin Saaid recently completed the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) Undergraduate Course. The ADFA is a tri-service Australian military academy that provides military and tertiary academic education for officers of the Australian Defence Force. The course consists of a year of military training and four years of tertiary education which is provided by the University of New South Wales.

    Scoring above distinction in Undergraduate Studies as well as obtaining First Class Honours in Civil Engineering, LTA Fahrul was awarded the Commandant’s Academic Commendation.

    “Through the ADFA Undergraduate Course, I was able to experience How our Australian counterparts manage different situations. By understanding their processes, it helps me work better with them in future bilateral engagements, especially since SAF and ADF enjoy good defense relations. I have also learnt that it is of utmost importance to establish, maintain and even strengthen defense relations with other countries.” LTA Fahrul shares his takeaways from the 5-year course.

    Indonesia Prepared To Return Australia Tsunami Aid

    Jakarta. Vice President Jusuf Kalla said on Monday that Indonesia was prepared to return the $1 billion in aid that Australia provided following the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

    The comments were in response to a reminder from Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who last week mentioned the relief when making a plea for two Australian drug traffickers on death row in Indonesia.

    “I have explained that we understood during the tsunami, there was humanitarian aid from 56 countries, including from Australia,” Kalla said on Monday. “If it was not considered humanitarian aid, we will return it.”

    Abbot’s comments have struck a raw nerve with many Indonesians, and in some major cities protests and theatrical coin collections have started.

    Twitter and Facebook have been flooded with messages under the hashtag #CoinsFor Australia — a campaign to repay Australia and a demand its neighbor respect Indonesia’s legal system.

    Since making the comments, Abbot has claimed they were not a threat but instead the aid referred to the strength of the two countries’ bilateral relations.

    Kalla said he had been communicating with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and he had explained that the execution of Australians Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan — ringleaders of the so-called Bali Nine heroin trafficking group — was not a decision made solely by President Joko Widodo.

    “She appreciated the explanation. She understands Indonesian law and I have told her it wasn’t the president who decided on the death penalty but an independent and objective court,” Kalla said.

    Sukumaran, 33, and Chan, 31, were caught trying to smuggle heroin out of Bali in 2005. They are among the next group of inmates to be executed by a firing squad.
