    Meet Another Ridzwan Dzafir Community Award Recipient – Suen Johan Bin Mohd Zain

    To me, the Ridzwan Dzafir Community Award not only represents an opportunity to continue my pursuit of academic excellence, it also serves as an inspiring symbol of perseverance, thought leadership, and unwavering dedication towards improving the community as well as the achievement of progressive social development. These values achieved average to below-average results from primary school up until the latter years of my undergraduate studies (in which I had to re-take my ‘A’ levels), I am grateful to have my relentless efforts at upgrading myself to be rewarded with a Master’s degree from the National University of Singapore, and now, an opportunity to complete a PhD at the University of Cambridge.

    I began to take huge interest in the area of ageing and post-retirement age employment after encountering the difficulties experienced by my retired father as well as the retired parents of members of my social circle. As the challenges of an ageing population begin to unravel across various social groups in Singapore, it is imperative to ensure that society develops inclusively and equitably with the guidance and support of empirically-grounded and empathetic thought leaders. I aim to position my role as a social scientist towards filling gaps in knowledge ageing population especially those more neglected segments such as women and ethnic minorities in the workforce.

    With the support of the Ridzwan Dzafir Community Award Scholarship, I am now able to advance in my career as an academic through the doctoral programme in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. My first year in Cambridge has been extremely fruitful both intellectually and socially. I have taken full advantage of the excellent teaching facilities by completing courses and workshops on quantitative research methods. Thus far, the supervision given by my primary and secondary advisors has been of the highest quality and ensures that my research questions address fundamental social and theoretical concerns. I have also been actively involved in cross-disciplinary research groups on labour market issues as well as in the organizing of PhD Research Skills Seminars for the Sociology department. Overall, Cambridge University has been a highly conducive environment for me to develop the necessary skills and networks to produce socially conscious and empirically rigorous scholarship.

    My ambition as an academic and a social scientist is to be a public intellectual that furthers the late Mr Ridzwan Dzafir’s legacy of promoting social change through progressive thinking. I am glad to be on my way to realising my dream of contributing towards building a more meaningful, financially secured, and sustainable future for older adults in Singapore.

    Dzar Ismail: Syukur Dilahir Seorang Muslim Di Singapura

    Kalau di China, orang Islam dilarang berpuasa, sampai ada yg sembunyi sembunyi bershaum. Disini, kita bebas berpuasa, itu pun ada orang tak puasa.

    Kalau di Perancis, keselamatan seseorang yg berhijab itu sering terancam. Siap ada undang-undang lagi melarang orang berhijab. Tidak disini. Sapa nak berhijab silakan, siapa tak nak, takder paksaan. Sendiri jawab.

    Kalau di England, sembahyang kat stadium, orang amek gambar, upload internet, label ‘disgrace’. Tidak disini, ada yg siap berjemaah satu sudut di stadium, sebelum game bermula. Sholat Hari Raya dalam stadium lagi ada.

    Kalau di Jerman, peh susah nak cari makanan halal. Ada bila melancong, siap tarpao biskut dengan Meggi, was was punya pasal. Tidak disini. Senang nak cari makanan halal. Bacon pun halal. Turkey baconlah.

    Kalau di Korea Selatan, peh susah nak cari masjid, Korea Utara jgn cakap lah. Disini, hampir satu masjid di setiap estet perumahan. Sampai belia masjid boleh buat acara touring naik basikal dari masjid ke masjid.

    Aku tinggal di Singapura. Pemerintah sekular, bukan pemerintah Islam. Tapi kadang kadang sifat mereka lebih Islam dari yg sekian ada di merata dunia.

    Penjualan arak diharamkan dibeberapa tempat dan waktu tertentu. Untuk menjaga keamanan dan keselamatan.

    Aktiviti menghisap rokok diharamkan dikebanyakkan tempat. Sampai bawah blok, corridor rumah pun tak boleh.

    Aktiviti hubungan sejenis diharamkan menurut undang-undang.

    Kita bebas berdakwah, nak buat ceramah, forum perdana, kelas agama, maulid, ibadah korban, silakan, asalkan dgn yg bertauliah dan mengikut garis panduan yg disarankan.

    Aku bersyukur dilahirkan seorang Muslim di Singapura. Bebas. Tiada halangan ketara. Hujan emas di negeri orang, hutan batu di negeri sendiri, lebih baik di negeri sini.

    Quite a few Tipah and Tiped (tak tahu nama Tipah lelaki) tried to justify discrimination with “Aku boleh pergi masjid sembahyang…aku boleh puasa”….mana ada diskriminasi.

    As if that is all that is in Islam. Dapat sembahyang dapat puasa…dah cukup. Baik LKY…tengok kita boleh puasa…dia tak paksa kita makan.

    Another group of Tipah pula argue when discussing Kuan Yew… “Our mission is to cleanse our heart”…

    tu pasal lah nothing changes….bukan Kuan Yew je yang tipu Tipah…Tipah tipukan diri sendiri.

    Rasulullah bawa risalah selama 23 tahun….just untuk ajar solat dan puasa? Tu je? Punya lama nak ajar solat dan puasa?

    And our mission in life is just cleanse our heart? Tak kisah lah Kuan Yew buat apa..tak kisah he discriminate our brothers and sisters….tak kisah lah dia kutuk Islam..

    Kita bersihkan hati je cukup…

    Tu pasal lah Rasulullah hari hari cuma duduk….bersihkan hati…puasa dan solat..tu je? He didnt do anything else for Islam?

    A Muslim is not simply someone who prays, fasts and cleanse his heart. The three are parts of the behaviour of the Muslim. But does not encapsulate what being a Muslim means.

    A Muslim is someone who submits fully, totally…with no reservations to Allah’s wills and commands.

    He not only prays, fast and cleanse his heart…he lives in full accordance with what Allah has decreed. And if there are any commands that he is prohibited from applying..he strives to remove the prohibition.

    He speaks and stands against oppression. He applies Islam totally in his life or he strives within himself to apply it.

    Islam is a full, comprehensive way of life, worldview, understanding.

    Let us not reduce Islam to just a couple of rituals.

    Malay and Muslim Organisations Pay Tribute To Lee Kuan Yew

    The Malay and Muslim community came together on Thursday to honour Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

    Yayasan Mendaki was joined by other Malay and Muslim organisations such as the Singapore Muslim Women’s Association or PPIS, and Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League (SKML) in paying tribute to Singapore’s first Prime Minister at Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green Community Centre.

    Ms Rahayu Mohamad, president of PPIS, read a poem titled A Great Man, which described Mr Lee’s dedication to building Singapore as a tribute to him.

    She said Mr Lee’s firmness educated Singaporeans to be pragmatic and to focus on development, which she thinks the younger generation has to continue to learn to ensure stability and progress.

    Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, who started the tribute session, said it is a difficult moment for everyone, especially for him as he had worked closely with Mr Lee.

    “We are indeed very lucky to have someone like Mr Lee who was always on the lookout for things that he could do to help improve the state of the Malay and Muslim community and I think we can point to many of his contributions,” he said.

    “He may have been misunderstood at times; I think that is inevitable. But at the end of the day, I think we have to look at the good of what a man has done.”

  • Don’t Discriminate Filipinos, We Are Malays Too

    I’m getting frustrated being labeled as non-Malay. Why? Here’s my story.

    My mom is a Filipino Catholic and my dad is a Malay Muslim. None of my parents convert, and so I was brought up going to church several times a year. Never been to a mosque because my dad has never cultivate any Islamic values in me or in our family. At this age, I still don’t know what is my religion, and I like it that way. But this topic is not about my religion. Being brought up speaking both Malay and Tagalog, and having experience both cultures, I do have a valid testimony to this confusion. Today I want to share my story about being a Filipino-Malay.

    But first, I think the term Filipino Malay is oxymoronic.

    Filipinos are of Malay stock. I know because I study SEA’s history in uni and this is my area of research.

    People of ASEAN mostly they came from Malay stock that is why our face and skin complexion looks very much the same. Although there are many mixed marriage it didn’t only happen in the Philippines.

    In the Philippines they call it mestizo while in other countries they have their own abbreviation. Please don’t think that Malay people in the Philippines are the only Malay who practice inter-racial marriages. There are many others in Indonesia (Dutch), Malaysia & Singapore (Chinese, Indian, British, Portuguese), Brunei etc.

    Because of different religious background people may forget that Filipinos are actually Malay because predominantly Malays in ASEAN are Muslim while in the Philippines almost all of them are Catholic.

    You don’t lump the race Malay as people who subscribe to the religion Islam, and therefore they are Muslims. Neither do you claim all Filipinos are Catholics.

    Language is a little bit different but they derived from the ancient Malay language. While Indonesians, Malaysians, and Bruneians can understand each other, many find it hard to understand Tagalog because it is completely different language BUT there are words that are similar or sounded similar. I don’t think there is any problem if people from these countries want to learn Tagalog/Bahasa Melayu/Indonesia.

    Tagalog is partly influenced by Spanish language, Malay, Chinese and local language like kapampangan, waray, cebuano.

    Spanish = trabajo is trabaho in tagalog
    Malay = kerbau is carabao in tagalog, mata is same in both language, as of kanan, kambing, anak etc.

    If asked about their race, most Filipinos would identify as being Malay. Filipinos are taught in schools to be proud of their Malay heritage and encouraged to strengthen their ties with other Malays in Southeast Asia.

    But Filipinos wishing to migrate in Singapore have to deny this fundamental identification because the Singapore government rejects the classification of Filipinos as Malay. But if Filipinos are not Malay, what ethnicity are they? Officially, Singapore recognizes immigrants from the neighboring Philippines as part of the racial category referred to as “Other.”

    Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority have clarified that new Singapore citizens of Filipino origin are not classified as Malays. They are typically classified as ‘Others’ under the race category. Indeed, this was affirmed by Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim who wrote on Facebook that Filipinos are classified as “Others” and not as Malays.

    But why refuse the Malay background of Filipinos in the first place? Perhaps it has something to do with the special privileges accorded to the Malay minority in Singapore. Article 152 of the Constitution of Singapore states that the government “shall recognize the special position of the Malays, who are the indigenous people of Singapore, and accordingly it shall be the responsibility of the Government to protect, safeguard, support, foster and promote their political, educational, religious, economic, social and cultural interests and the Malay language.”

    For Filipino immigrants, it must come as a shock for them to be told by Singaporean authorities that they are not Malays. To avoid immigration troubles, perhaps it is more convenient for Filipino workers to shade the “Others” category when filing paperwork than to insist that they are Malays.
