Petition To Keep “Pickup Artist” Julian Blanc Out Of Singapore

He was kicked out of Australia with his tail between his legs after an online campaign brought his controversial dating advice to light.

And if netizens here have their way, pickup artist Julien Blanc will not be allowed to set foot in Singapore.

An online petition on change.org has asked Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean to keep Blanc and his US-based group, Real Social Dynamics (RSD), out of Singapore.

The petition was started by Singaporean Charis Mah on Friday (Nov 14), and has attracted more than 600 supporters by 11.20pm on Friday.

On the petition to Mr Teo, Miss Mah writes: “Julien Blanc and his group, RSD (Real Social Dynamics) are a group of sexist and racist ‘pick up artists’, who have made a living by teaching men how to violate women through physical and emotional abuse.

“Julien gives seminars on how to pick up women using a variety of highly abusive techniques, such as economic abuse, isolation, coercion and threats, intimidation, emotional abuse, and ‘male privilege’.

“According to information earlier obtained from the RSD website, he may attempt to enter Singapore in the near future.

“…Do not associate Singapore with a man who chokes women around the world as part of his pick up game. Please help us stand with the women of Australia, Canada, Korea, Japan, Brazil, the UK, and women everywhere, and do not let Singapore play host to events where men are being taught how to violate and harass women.”

You can find the Singapore petition here.

    Controversial

Blanc has come under fire for giving men sexist and racist advice as well as advocating the use of violence in their quest to seduce women.

In one video, Blanc boasts that “you can do as you want” as a white male in Tokyo, with accompanying footage showing him grabbing women and trying to shove their heads towards his crotch. One instance shows him grabbing another woman by the neck and choking her.

Blanc said: “I’m just romping through the streets, just grabbing girls’ heads, just like, head, pfft on the d**k. Head, on the d**k, yelling, ‘Pikachu.’”

A global #TakeDownJulienBlanc campaign started by American Jenn Li persuaded Australian authorities to cancel Blanc’s visa last week.

Speaking to Sky News, Australian immigration minister Scott Morrison said: “This guy wasn’t putting forward political ideas, he was putting forward abuse that was derogatory to women and that’s just something, those are values abhorred in this country.”

Since then, petitions from various countries including Japan, Canada, the UK and Brazil have been set up to keep Blanc from spreading his message on those shores.

    Salam R1C,

Heartbreaking pictures of the killings and the families’ anguish circled the Internet and television news stations. People around the world were outraged, including Singaporeans.

The effects of this war are not just in lost lives.  According to the UN Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 1660 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged since Operation Protective Edge began. It has resulted in the displacement of 9,900 Palestinians.

In this adult war of obsessive revenge and punishment, it is the children who pay the highest price. It is a war where children become parentless, and parents become childless.

There are many parents in Singapore who have been deeply affected by the Israel-Palestine conflict which resulted in the countless killings of innocents children.

I strongly urge R1C to share a petition created by my friend, and please spread the message to all Muslim and non-Muslim parents who wish to adopt children: now they can push the government to offer adoption of Palestinian children to Singaporean families. By signing this petition, there is a glimmer of hope to help these poor, homeless and parentless Palestinian children. Together we can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Please sign the petition –  Singapore to offer adoption of Palestinian children.

  • Academic Freedom in Spotlight

    Associate Professor Reuben Yik-Pern Wong
    1391436_225100154319731_1386440609_n
    Walid Jumblatt Abdullah

THE recent controversy over a National University of Singapore professor’s Facebook posts on homosexuality has thrust the issue of academic freedom to the fore (“Protests over NUS don’s Facebook post”; last Saturday).

Academic freedom extends from the core peer-reviewed activities of research and teaching to include extramural domains of speech – where faculty members speak or write on larger political, social or religious matters outside their institutions.

While academics, who enjoy a privileged position in society, should be held to a high standard of accountability for what they say in or outside academia, society should not curtail them from expressing their ideas. Otherwise, social innovation, knowledge creation and creativity would be seriously hampered.

Clearly, these two imperatives need to be reconciled.

The term “academic freedom” emerged in German universities in the 19th century. The three basic principles were the freedom to teach, the freedom to learn, and the freedom to do research. These principles were adapted to different circumstances in higher education all over the world.

The 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is regularly cited in legal cases involving academic freedom.

An AAUP interpretive comment from the 1970 update of the 1940 statement noted that “controversy is at the heart of the free academic inquiry which the entire statement is designed to foster”.

Academics should be allowed, indeed encouraged, to express alternative or non-conformist opinions, however counter-intuitive these opinions may seem.

Of course, they should do so with tact and respect, and within society’s moral and legal limits. Academics must also protect the intellectual space they so cherish, by allowing others to voice opposing opinions.

How we respond to the latest incident is indicative of how we wish to move as a society. Do we value engaging people and dissonant ideas on a calm and intellectual basis, and respond to dissenting ideas respectfully and via reasoned argumentation?

In a civilised society, ideas should be discussed, debated, developed or demolished at the liberal marketplace of ideas, without fear of being accused of bigotry or thought crimes. Otherwise, we risk slipping into a culture of intolerance and self-censorship, a perpetual pressure to conform to the “politically correct” or “progressive” ideas of the day.

I hope that responses to contentious views can follow the dictum famously ascribed to the thinker Voltaire: “I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

  • Syed Khairudin Aljunied Clarifies Personal View on LGBTQ

    Syed Khairudin Aljunied
    Syed Khairudin Aljunied

    Some Clarifications

    Dear Friends,

There has been coverage in the press about my postings about the LGBT movement in Singapore.

While the media has provided coverage for the LGBT supporters, so far, little coverage has been provided to those that are not for LGBT.

Hence, I would like to take this opportunity to make clear my views on the matter:

    1. My initial posting entitled “Liberal Islam, Lesbianism and the likes of it” is still on my Facebook page. It has not been removed because it reflects my personal conviction on the issue.

    2. I edited the post and removed certain words such as “cancer” and “social diseases” prior to the issue being made public. This change was done in view of the sensitivities on the ground which I am fully aware of.

    3. My position as a Muslim about LGBT remains clear and is in line with the view of Muslims scholars such as the one made by PERGAS that “According to the higher objectives of Islamic Law, the family unit serves to bring in new generation and preserve the existence of humankind. For that reason, Islam gives attention in establishing a family only through the legal marriage of a man and woman. Any form of extra-marital or same-sex relations are hence prohibited in Islam (MEDIA STATEMENT, 11 February 2014,https://www.facebook.com/Pergas.Singapore)

    4. There is no disagreement in Islam on the prohibition of homosexuality. As a Muslim, I fully subscribe to Islam’s guidance and stand firm that homosexuality is a challenge that needs to be addressed through reasoned dialogue and education.

This view is my personal view and I stand by it as a member of a religious community in Singapore.

    Thank you,

    Khairudin Aljunied

  • Homosexuality and Liberal Islam are Dangerous to Singapore

    Mohamed SaiddhinAbdullah
    Mohamed SaiddhinAbdullah
    syed Khairudin
    NUS Professor Syed Khairudin Aljunied

I was recently made aware of the uproar over my dear friend Prof Dr Syed Khairudin Aljunied and his post on the wall of his personal Facebook account.I do not see why is there a need to make a big fuss over his post in the first place. There were some who took offence as they see it as him replying in his official capacity just because the word “prof” appeared. I find it daft really. It was the questioner who addressed him as “prof”. Prof K was replying in his personal capacity and nowhere did he say he is replying in his official capacity. (note that I too personally address him as Prof K)

Next, there are those who took offense at the words “diseases”, “cancerous” and “cleanse”. The ones starting the petition are being mischievous when they took those words out of context. It is literally putting words into his mouth when they angle it the way they are doing it now. The hypocrisy……

And if he edited the post, isn’t it good in some sense as perhaps he did see value in some of the complaints brought forth and corrected it accordingly. Or perhaps he realised it himself. I am just speculating here.

Most seem to fail to note who the post was addressing it to. Prof K was addressing it to the Muslim faithful. A Muslim not adhering to the teachings of Islam can’t be called the faithful can he? Nor can a Non-Muslim be part of the Muslim faithful. He is addressing to the in-house crowd. (though what Prof K is suggesting can be used by the other religions in their own religious context).

    pinkdot2012asmall1

He is replying to a Muslim. How do you expect him to reply then? There is no way we can compromise on the issue. Islam abhors homosexual acts and we can’t condone nor compromise on it. As a scholar, he is obligated to stand up to deviant ideologies and practices. Read below:

“Scholars and religious teachers (asatizahs) must speak up and write against these ideologies and practices. They are obligated to explain to the public the true meaning of what Islam is and sexuality as defined by the Quran and Sunnah. When the scholars and asatizahs are silent about these issues, corruption will spread like wild fire.”

Same goes to Liberal Islam as they bring about a dangerous ideology that runs contrary to the teachings of Islam. They discard 1400++ years of scholarly research, debate and rulings and bring in instead deviant interpretation of the religion claiming that theirs is most up to date. And most of them who are advocating it are not even learned enough in the knowledge of Islam in order to make any new rulings. The ideas and ideals brought forth by the proponents of these ideologies and practices brings about many social ills and it is detrimental to the well being of any society. Any part of the body that is not normally there and brings diseases to it is cancerous. Then there is a need to cleanse it. Cleanse not in the sense of killing them but to do it spiritually in the context put forth by Prof K.

If we do not make a stand, society will degenerate faster that it is now. What next? If the pedophiles decided to form a lobby and lobby for the age of consent to be lowered further, what do we do? Do we let them be coz it is their rights? Freedom to love mah…Some European countries approve of Bestiality and some in fact have animal brothels. If ever we have a bestiality lobby here, do we allow them through also?

Where do we draw the line on the morality of society?

Many too failed to notice the words that come before and after those words mentioned above. They also fail to see the overall meaning he is conveying. Put it in context people! Nowhere is he spouting hatred for a certain group of minorities. It is conveniently angled in such a way by the authors of the petition. He is in fact advocating early detection and seeking early treatment. Read below:

“Parents and school teachers must be made aware of these challenges. They must detect early signs of waywardness from their children and students. Give advice, send them to proper religious classes and seek help from counsellors, if necessary. Win over the hearts of the misled youths and explain to them what’s right with knowledge and wisdom.”

We condemn homosexual acts but we do not condemn those who have homosexual tendencies or those who are transsexuals. We welcome them with open arms, always ready to listen to them and offer them advice if need be. We will accept them as who they are but we will never fail to remind them to return back to the true path. Coz we love ’em.

    Peace.

PS. To all those who support Prof K can like his fan page created by some supporter out there. Haters need not come.
