  • Singapore Murtad Association Pokes Fun at NUS Prof Syed Khairudin Aljunied on LGBTQ Issue

    A friend of mine from NUS alerted me on the post below which was written by a FASS Associate Professor who teaches Malay Studies at her school.

    Please bear in mind that this is an influential person who is supposed to educate students without foisting his religious beliefs on them. However, he has evidently transgressed his boundaries.

    So here is my reply to Mr. Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied:

    Dear Prof, are you aware that lesbianism has existed way before Islam? A religion which only began existing in the 610 AD? In the Code of Hammurabi, written circa 1750 BC, it was mentioned that women who were allowed to marry other women were called the “salzikrum” (“daughter-men”). If you think that this is an isolated case, let me further support it by mentioning that homosexuality has been observed in 1500 species, ranging from large marine animals to insects. It is clear from nature that there is more to sexual behaviour than one that is solely geared towards reproduction.

    However, even if you are still convinced that homosexuality, especially lesbianism, is a choice, how does this relate to it being morally-incorrect? In what way does someone’s sexual preferences harms or infringes upon others’ rights? If I were to prefer asam pedas to curry and eat my food in solitude, while you on the other hand, prefer the latter and forces me to only eat curry because that is what the majority prefer, wouldn’t your action be considered as a form of bullying?

    Yes, you will then proceed to rebuff my points by quoting anti-homosexuality verses from the Quran, but so what? I, as an ex-Muslim, question the book’s credibility since it is rife with incoherent chronological order for historical events (Quran states Virgin Mary as Aaron and Moses’s sister, when in actuality, both of them were born 1500 years apart), scientific inaccuracies (Earth is flat and Sun and Moon orbits around it) and mathematical errors (the calculation for the inheritance law did not amount to a whole number, it resulted in an improper fraction instead).

    Are you sure you want to openly claim that lesbianism is a “wrongful ideology and practice” when your religion, Islam, is in fact, made up of layers upon layers of lies? But then again, in Islam, taqiyyah is totally “halal” and permissible in order to beguile the ignorant from the flaws of Islam. Not only that, your religion, Islam, preaches hate and intolerance in the name of Jihad.

    Can you now see the difference, Prof? Being in a fulfilling relationship with a woman is not harming others but actively persecuting others who don’t agree with your beliefs, is.

    As evident from its violence-inducing scripture, Islam has no place in a multi-religious and secular country such as Singapore. But of course, not many non-Muslims or even Muslims, for that matter, know about their own religion, which is why I find it appalling that even when Muslims themselves are mired in ignorance of the true Islam, they have no qualms dictating others on how they should live. And how they should love.

    Wake up. This is 21st century Singapore, if you prefer to bound your life rigidly to the teachings of the Quran, please time-travel back to 7th Century Saudi Arabia. I’m sure with your parochial mindset and stalwart need to assert what you believe as “morally-correct”, you will definitely “gel well” with the barbaric and tribal Arab men of that epoch.

    Let’s face it: Lesbianism isn’t cancerous, your religion is.

    Dik, anjing ni najis berat. Haram disentuh. Bukan masalah dosa, tapi masalahnya haram. Bila ko sentuh, ko kena sertu tangan ko dan juga segala anggota yg bersentuhan dgn anjing tu. Jika tidak solat ko x sah sbb ko bernajis. Ko xleh baca al Quran. Ko xleh masuk rumah pun kalau ikutkan sbb nnt satu rumah ko bernajis.

    Ini bukan sekadar urusan antara ko dgn Allah, tp soal kebersihan, ibadah dll. Xkan tu pun x reti2?

    Allah mmg letakkan anjing n babi sebagai najis berat, tp dalam masa yg kita dilarang menyakiti dan menyeksa kedua2 haiwan tu. Dan membela anjing pun harus dgn syarat utk keselamatan dan diletakkan jauh dr rumah dan ditambat rapi agar x sesenang lari keluar masuk rumah agar x menajiskan rumah.

    Bukannya boleh bela dok bawak jenjalan gini. Banyak lg menatang ko boleh bela dik.

  • Brunei Prohibits Non-Muslims to Use 19 Islamic words

     

    WORDS such as “Allah“, “mu’min” (believer) and “masjid” (mosque) cannot be used with regards to another religion besides Islam, said a senior syariah officer yesterday.

    Under the Syariah Penal Code Order, there are 19 words which cannot be used with respect to other religions.

    They are azan; baitullah; Al Quran; Allah; fatwa; Firman Allah; hadith; Haji; hukum syara’; ilahi;Ka’bah; kalimah al syahadah; kiblat; masjid; imam; mufti; mu’min; solat; and wali.

    Hj Hardifadhillah Hj Mohd Salleh, a senior syariah legal officer of the Islamic Legal Unit, yesterday briefed staff of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) on key parts of the Order, which will take effect this April.

    Speaking to more than 200 people, the legal officer gave some examples of offences that can apply to non-Muslims such as zina (adultery) with a Muslim partner, drinking alcohol in a public place, andkhalwat (close proximity) with a Muslim partner.

    Khalwat is defined in the Order as a non-married couple who are “living together; cohabiting; in confinement; or isolating oneself in close proximity that can lead to suspicion that they are committing an immoral act.”

    If convicted, the penalty is a fine of up to $4,000 and/or one year in prison.

    For adultery between a married Muslim and a married non-Muslim, both parties can be punished by stoning to death if the offence is proved by confession, or the testimony of four eyewitnesses.

    Hj Hardifadhillah added that any person who instigates any Muslim man or woman to divorce, or neglect their duties towards their partner, can be fined up to $4,000 and/or jailed for a year.

    Additionally, any Muslim parent who surrenders his child into the care of a non-Muslim can be fined up to $20,000 and/or jailed for up to five years.

    Brunei will enforce the Syariah Penal Code Order in three phases.

    Present at the briefing was MIPR Minister Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar and other senior officials from the ministry.

    The briefing was conducted by officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Prime Minister’s Office, Attorney General’s Chambers, and Islamic Da’wah Centre yesterday.

  • Indon Ulamas Accept Bribes in Milions of Rupiah to Issue Halal Licenses

    The Indonesian Council of Ulamas (MUI) has accepted hundreds of millions of rupiah in bribes from Australian halal certification companies, a Tempo investigation has found.

    The owners of several halal certification businesses in Australia have confirmed it is common to pay the MUI for the licenses.

    “It’s common knowledge in Australia that in order to get authorization you have to bribe MUI officials,” Mohamed el-Mouelhy, president of the Sydney-based Halal Certification Authority told Tempo.

    El-Mouelhy gave AUD $26,000 to seven MUI officials during a visit to Australia in 2006, of which “the largest share” went to Amidhan, he said.  He did not, however, receive authorization.

    Australian Halah Food Services (AHFS), a Melbourne-based business, told Tempothey paid bribes to senior officials from MUI to renew their license to certify abattoirs as halal. These bribes range from smaller payments of AUD $3000 (around Rp. 31 million) to AUD $10,000 put directly in the bank account of MUI Chairman Amidhan Shaberah.

    The accreditation process, which Amidhan also does for European halal-certifiers, is a free service, with the MUI expecting money to be put into the local Islamic community as recompense.

    The AFHS was re-issued certification in 2013 after losing it for failing to uphold halal standards at slaughterhouses. When visiting abattoirs in Victoria certified by the AFHS in January, Tempo found halal meat being prepared in the same areas as pork, and beef not killed according to shariah law.

    Denial

    Facing a flood of accusations, MUI officials have denied the charges, asserting that the halal certification should be free of charge.

    “We do not have cash for making the visit,” said LPPOM Director at MUI Lukmanul Hakim.

    Hakim has also refuted profiteering allegations, saying that they “charge the host authority to cover the visit expenses”.

    Meanwhile, Chief of Indonesia Ulema Counsel (MUI), Amidhan Shaberah, noted that “halal certification should be free of charge”.

    Shaberah added that the same term should be applied to all halal certification institutes in other countries.

    Indonesia is the most populous Muslim state where Muslims make up 86.1 percent of Indonesia’s 235 million population.

    The Ulema council, established in 1975, has carved a key role for itself in the Muslim country.

    The accusations have sparked outcry among the Indonesians who slammed MUI monopoly of the halal industry deeming its conduct as “haram”.

  • ‘Halal’ Sex Shop Aims to Sell Halal Sex Devices and Props

    Browsers are directed to different pages for men and women. They are offered a range of condoms, massage oils, sprays, and scents.

    “Despite what outsiders may believe, sexuality is a normal human necessity in Islam,” says the site’s founder, 38-year-old Haluk Demirel.

    “But people, especially women, don’t feel comfortable buying products from pornographic looking web sites. Or they don’t like to go into to Western-style sex shops. So my online shop serves as a comfortable area, where they can easily find something to cater for their natural needs.”

    Mr Demirel describes his business as the first online sex shop in the Muslim world to operate in line with Islamic teaching – the world’s first Halal sex shop is, reportedly, in the Netherlands – a regular home for sexual innovation.

    He does not have a formal Halal certificate (“Halal”, or “Helal” in Turkish, means permissible under Islamic law), so carries out his own unofficial checks to make sure that the products he sells are allowed in Islam.

    “In Islam, masturbation is forbidden therefore I don’t sell vibrators, dolls or other similar toys for self pleasure,” he says.

    In particular, Mr Demirel hopes to attract to his site women who may be put off by the more direct language of traditional sex websites. So far, around 45% of his customers are female.

    “We use words which are delicate, not pornographic,” he explains. “For example, instead of ‘horny’ we use ‘desiring’. These details are important.”

    In Turkey, public discussion of sex is still a delicate subject. Some politicians prefer to avoid the subject altogether.

    During a recent visit to a new Ankara shopping centre, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan faced the potential indignity of walking past a Victoria’s Secret shop, a chain most famous for its lingerie.

    Quietly, the owners of the shop pulled down their shutters before the prime minister walked by – avoiding the possibility of mutual embarrassment.

    Here in Istanbul, in neighbourhoods unlikely to be disturbed by prime-ministerial walkabouts, several dozen sex shops operate. None claims to operate in the name of religion.

    “People come freely to shop here,” says one owner, who preferred not to give his name.

    Does he worry about his customers leaving him for Helal Sex Shop?

    “I haven’t checked their website,” he answers dismissively.

    But many others have. Some accuse the website of taking advantage of a trend for Islamic-approved products.

    “They invented ‘Islamic fashion’,” writes one Turkey’s most-read newspaper columnist, Ahmet Hakan, “Then ‘Islamic hotels’ and ‘Islamic holidays’. Now, finally, they’ve moved into sexual products.”

    On social media in Turkey, Helal Sex Shop is the subject of intense, occasionally mocking and graphic debate – much of it unrepeatable here.

    “Let your Helal shop be for the best… 🙂 The only thing you have not exploited for religion was lubricant,” writes one critic on Twitter.

    “It’s a website that helps people who are having sex with their spouses,” posts another commentator. “Instead of being criticised it deserves to be appreciated.”

    The debate has helped to spread the word. Helal Sex Shop now gets around 50,000 clicks a day.

    The interest has taken Haluk Demirel by surprise. Under the weight of users, his site has now crashed.
