    Boy With Autism Went Missing At Childcare, My First Skool’s Outing

    Parents, do you have any bad experiences with the child care, My First Skool? It is so scary that the teacher only realized that the autism boy went missing after the boy was found at Yishun MRT station.

    This is what happen in my son school today (24 October 2017). School name is My First Skool (Blk 140 Serangoon North Ave 2).

    10.48am – I received a call from school teacher saying that my son is missing from school.

    10.53am – Yishun mrt staff called up saying that my son is there.

    Thereafter i rushed to Yishun and yes is really my son. Really thanks god he is fine. So after that i went back to school and i hope i can talk to the school principal and teachers nicely. But what they told us is really driving us crazy. Below is what the class teacher told us.

    10.15am – She bought half of the class students which is around 7 students to outside the class to water and clear the plants.

    10.30am – All students back to class.

    10.31am – She found that my son is missing.

    And by this time i go more crazy… I was thinking the timing is not tally. So i question back.

    Me : Yishun mrt called us at 10.53am and told us my son is there so is impossible he can took bus 73 go to Ang Mo Kio mrt then to Yishun mrt.

    Principal : Teacher please think carefully.

    Teacher : I maybe remember the timing wrongly.

    At this point i went really crazy and told them off. Please stop making up story! So you dun really know what time my son went missing?????? If now i cant find my son how??? What you going to do???

    All i ended the conversation with them.

    I know someone will ask why my son will do all this when he is big enough to know this is wrong. But please note he is an autism kid and he been in this school since toddler, principal and all teachers in the school know about his situation.

    And ya as a parents i did ask my son to say sorry to the teachers as it is wrong to run away from school.

    I seriously need thanks AWWA teachers teaching my son to remember my contact number if not i might not be able to find son and i might have lost my son forever.

    Thanks god my son is fine.

    Everyone who read this post please help to like and share. This can happen to my son it can also happen on other kids in the school. This is really unacceptable.

    The Batter Room: Membuat Kek Dan Membantu Golongan Kurang Bernasib Baik Dan Berkeperluan Khas

    Ini bengkel membuat kek yang sangat lain daripada yang lain. Ia ‘istimewa’. Bukan saja anda belajar membuat kek, biskut atau pastri di sini. Malah anda mungkin didampingi, disertai atau dibantu oleh golongan berkeperluan khas.

    Itulah kelainan penuh bermakna yang ditawarkan The Batter Room kendalian Cik Nurhuda Mohd Nor, 36 tahun.

    The Batter Room, yang terletak di Blok 825 Tampines St 81, adalah hasil gabungan dua minat mendalam Cik Nurhuda – membuat kek dan membantu golongan kurang bernasib baik dan berkeperluan khas.

    “Walaupun ia hanya tiga bulan saja sejak Batter Room ditubuhkan, mengadakan studio yang inklusif untuk membuat kek sudah menjadi impian saya sejak usia saya 17 tahun lagi,” cerita Cik Nurhuda kepada BERITAMediacorp.

    Kini, The Batter Room sudah membimbing sekitar 30 anak remaja sekolah rendah dan menengah yang mengalami keadaan seperti autisme, sindrom Down dan ADHD.

    BELUM INKLUSIF LAGIKAH MASYARAKAT KITA?

    Cik Nurhuda mempunyai pengalaman 19 tahun dalam bidang bekerja dengan golongan sedemikian. Beliau memberitahu BERITAMediacorp bahawa golongan berkeperluan khas itu kurang diberi peluang untuk menjadi sebahagian daripada wadah konvensional.

    Beliau yang juga pernah berkhidmat lebih 10 tahun sebagai seorang guru di Sekolah MINDS, memberitahu bahawa daripada pengalaman beliau, ramai bekas pelajarnya menghadapi kesusahan untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan.

    “Ini membuat golongan berkeperluan khas terlepas banyak peluang. Hanya mereka yang dapat berdikari saja dapat diambil kerja. Saya tertanya, bagaimana dengan yang lain? Saya tidak mahu keadaan mereka semakin teruk,” luah beliau.

    Ada yang menganggap golongan tersebut sebagai sukar untuk diambil kerja dan banyak syarikat tidak mahu meluangkan masa untuk menjalankan latihan.

    BERITAMediacorp juga mendapati daripada laporan-laporan sebelum ini bahawa, dalam satu tinjauan dijalankan Yayasan Lien, hanya lima daripada 10 ibu bapa selesa anak mereka berinteraksi dengan golongan berkeperluan khas.

    JADI APAKAH PERANAN THE BATTER ROOM?

    “Saya tahu saya tidak dapat membantu semua orang tetapi sekurang-kurangnya dapatlah menghulurkan bantuan sedikit,” ujar Cik Nurhuda.

    The Batter Room sudah menjalankan beberapa bengkel untuk mereka yang berkeperluan khas dan satu bengkel inklusif di mana ia dihadiri masyarakat umum dan mereka yang berkeperluan khas.

    “Alhamdulillah semuanya berjalan dengan lancar. Mereka juga memberi respons yang memberansangkan,” kata beliau penuh semangat kepada BERITAMediacorp.

    Cik Nurhuda menyifatkan The Batter Room sebagai tempat memberi peluang untuk semua orang. Beliau memberitahu BERITAMediacorp bahawa beliau percaya golongan kurang bernasib baik dan berkeperluan khas hanya mereka yang disalahfahami.

    “Saya ingin Batter Room menjadi ruang di mana tiada masalah untuk anda meluahkan segalanya, tiada masalah untuk anda mengalami ‘breakdown/meltdown’, tiada masalah penerimaan tidak kira kaum, masalah, latar belakang ataupun gangguan yang anda mengalami,” ujar beliau.

    “KITA HIDUP SEKALI”, JADI BANTULAH SESAMA INSAN

    Apabila ditanyakan soalan mengapa Cik Nurhuda memulakan The Batter Room, beliau memberitahu ia bukan sekadar minat dan impian saja.

    Beliau menjelaskan kepada BERITAMediacorp bahawa harapan para ibu bapa yang mempunyai anak berkeperluan khas yang beliau kenali, menjadi antara faktor itu.

    Ini bertambah dengan sokongan padu yang diberi suami Cik Nurhuda. Suaminya bukan saja mendengar dan turut berbincang dengannya tetapi juga memberikan kata-kata semangat untuk beliau memulakan usaha murni ini, kata Cik Nurhuda.

    “Beliau memberitahu saya supaya jangan tunggu lagi. Teruskan. Tiada apa yang menghalang. Kami juga tidak ingin keuntungan. Kita hidup sekali. Kami harap dalam hidup ini dapat kami menyumbang dan membantu sesama insan,”ujar beliau.

    IMPIAN LEBIH BESAR – BANTU LEBIH RAMAI KUMPULAN ‘TERSEPIT’

    Akur dengan kemungkinan perniagaannya tidak memulangkan hasil yang menguntungkan, Cik Nurhuda berkata antara cabaran lain dialami The Batter Room adalah meyakinkan, mengenalkan, dan diterima masyarakat akan misi dan visi The Batter Room.

    Beliau juga menambah bahawa beliau berharap The Batter Room dapat diiktiraf sebagai perusahaan sosial bagi mendapat pendanaan dan sokongan.

    Ini kerana beliau berharap The Batter Room pada masa akan datang dapat membuka pintu kepada pelbagai lapisan masyarakat seperti mereka yang mempunyai masalah kewangan, mental dan juga para bekas banduan.

    Beliau juga berharap dapat menjadikan The Batter Room dilengkapi dengan kemudahan-kemudahan yang mesra kerusi roda.

    “Saya sudah mengadakan perbincangan dengan MINDS untuk menawarkan Batter Room sebagai tempat latihan amali bagi para pelajarnya,” katanya.

    WAJAH THE BATTER ROOM YANG DIINGINKAN

    Sejujurnya, menurut Cik Nurhuda, pada jangka masa panjang beliau berharap The Batter Room dapat menggajikan golongan kurang bernasib baik dan berkeperluan khas dan menjadi pembantu semasa bengkel diadakan.

    “Saya cuma harap orang ramai dapat menerima Batter Room. Lebih daripada itu, saya harap masyarakat dapat menerima satu sama lain tanpa memikirkan kekurangan seseorang,” luah beliau.

    Semestinya, Cik Nurhuda boleh disifatkan sebagai antara usahawan yang berani. Berani untuk tidak meninggalkan di belakang, golongan ‘istimewa’ yang memerlukan sokongan masyarakat. Berani untuk tidak mengejar wang dan keuntungan semata-mata, kerana sifat kemanusiannya.

    Calder Kam, 12, missing since 7.30am. Wearing light blue school shirt (see pix) with his name on it and beige bermudas. Carrying dark blue haversack. Calder is autistic and cannot talk well.

    Life After Graduation: Special Education Students At Work

    “Faiz, can you pack all these things into a box and seal it?” asked Mark Maranan, lead cook at the central kitchen of restaurant chain Han’s central kitchen.

    Faiz Muhsin nodded. “One, two, three…,” the 20-year-old started counting while packing the items.

    The task may seem easy to most people, but for Faiz, who has a moderate to severe intellectual disability, it can be quite daunting.

    Faiz has been working at Han’s central kitchen for almost two years. In his final year at the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (Minds) in 2014, Faiz joined the School-to-Work (S2W) Transition Programme which prepares students with special needs to enter the workforce.

    Under the programme, Faiz was trained for about two months by SG Enable – an agency that helps people with disabilities – before he was deployed to Han’s for a nine-month internship.

    After the internship, he was offered a part-time position as a packer at the food and beverage chain. To help Faiz assimilate into the work environment, his supervisor Mr Maranan informed the team about his condition and they accommodated his working style.

    “He’s a quiet person so we need to adjust the way we communicate with him. We need to talk to him a bit slowly and we need to say it in short sentences so he can easily understand what we want him to do,” said Mr Maranan, who also described Faiz as a hardworking person who would often ask questions about his job.

    “Faiz can communicate quite well. Sometimes we also have lunch together. He’s like an ordinary person to me,” he said.

    Faiz’s job scope has also been expanded: He now helps out at the central kitchen, counting and marinating raw pieces of fish or chicken as part of the food preparation process.

    “I like my job. Free lunch, earn money. They (colleagues) are very fun,” Faiz said with a wide grin on his face.

    Others have not been as fortunate as Faiz. For Grace Cho, who has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) – a condition which hinders communication and interaction with people – there were difficulties in getting along with her co-workers.

    The challenge for the 28-year-old was not about finding for a job, but keeping one.

    After graduating from Mountbatten Vocational School in 2007, Grace took on several jobs before she was referred by an organisation that provides employment services for people with disabilities to work as a vegetable packer at a logistics company.

    Getting along with her co-workers at the company was not easy as she would often be scolded for not being fast enough on her job.

    “There were a lot of vegetables coming in and they (co-workers) started to rush for that. When it got jammed up, the vegetables dropped onto the floor … I was focusing on packing and sealing and I didn’t pick them up. Some of them said to me ‘You didn’t stop and help us pick up, you are not very good’,” Grace recounted.

    “I felt angry. I pushed the boxes and they dropped onto the floor. But they (co-workers) kept repeating that they had enough,” she said.

    Grace eventually left the job after less than a year. Her next job as a packer at a pharmaceutical company did not go well either as she was not clear about the workflow. “I got more things to pack. I don’t have a schedule and I didn’t know which one to do. I got confused,” she said.

    With her mother’s encouragement, Grace sought help from the Autism Resource Centre’s Employability and Employment Centre and she is currently working as a packer at The Green Corridor, where fresh fruits are processed and packaged for the supermarkets in Singapore.

    According to the Ministry of Education (MOE), about 300 students graduate from Special Education (SPED) schools each year. About 1 in 3 from each cohort went on to work in different industries including retail, hospitality, medical services as well as food and beverage.

    To help Singaporeans with special needs find employment, MOE has put in place various measures to prepare students in SPED schools for employment.

    These include having a framework for vocational education that guides SPED schools to develop a structured curriculum to help students with special needs gain employable skills.

    Students who obtained either the ITE Skills Certification at Metta School or Workforce Skills Qualification at Delta Senior School may apply for jobs in the open market or attend further training if they meet the pre-requisites for the courses, said MOE.

    President of the Autism Resource Centre Denise Phua said one of the reasons that adults with autism are not able to hold down a job for long could be because many of them were never exposed to the culture of work and what is expected on the job.

    “It is only in recent years that the quality of early intervention and education of students with autism is raised,” said Ms Phua, who is also a Member of Parliament.

    Another reason could also be due to low awareness among employers to put in place autism-friendly worksites, she added.

    While Ms Phua noted that employers have greater awareness than before and the emergence of more dedicated agencies to support people with special needs, more can be done to improve the current situation.

    “It’s about showing models, systems, possibilities and success that employment and work can be done for people with ASD,” she said.

    “It’s also about educating people and employers that there are different models of employment. For example, part time is one of the viable ways for people with special needs to be employed.”

    For Grace, she has been working at The Green Corridor for more than a year. Besides having a job coach onsite to guide her, there are also visual instructions and communication scripts to help her work independently.

    “The task that I was given I did it independently. I’m also following given schedule without someone telling me what to do next. I’m happy,” she said.

    Desperate Father: Will My Son Ever Get A Place In Autism SPED School When Even My Own MP Cannot Help?

    NOT ASKING FOR THE MOON…Just A Place For My Son In Autism Sped School…!!!

    I rarely post on social media. But today is an exception. Today I can’t help but to post this.

    After much persuasion from my wife… today after work, I accompanied both my wife and son to Eden School / Eden Centres for Adults / Eden Children’s Centres / AAS for Autism, in hopes to plead for a slot this year for Nabil in there.

    After meeting with the in charge for enrollment, to our disappointment we were told that the earliest most possible intake for Nabil is next year in January 2018.

    He’s of a P2 age this year…it’s been 2 lengthy years already..how long more do you expect my son to wait… I can’t help feeling the negative vibes that Nabil is like not being considered for a place at all when being told to go and try for other sped schools or private schools…..this is easier said than done.

    It is beyond my understanding why distance between school and home is not being considered during a sped school enrollment just like how it is being applied in mainstream primary schools.

    Really could not comprehend the system how a student who resides in as far as pasir ris and tampines are prioritized and get a slot in Eden (Bt Batok) while we the apparent west residents (CCK) are left hanging precariously by the hook.

    We as parents are truly exhausted. Have tried numerous means of help…even to the extend of approaching the Member of Parliament of our area Mr Zaqy Mohamad in hopes to expedite the enrollment but till today..we have yet to receive even a reply from him regarding the matter regrettably.

    It is just emotionally tiring and draining to say the least…as a husband, seeing your wife shedding her tears helplessly in public as we step out of Eden School earlier on while hugging my son was the last straw for me!

    Seek help from Ministry of Education, Singapore you say?? How could we when in the first place, they couldn’t even help to issue a student ezlink card for Nabil just because he has yet to get enrolled into a school. Yes. My son all this while has been paying adult fare whenever he took the train since he turns 7. How justifying is this…?! You see how my son has been tossed back and forth all these while….

    The system got to change…someone has got to look into the cases which falls through the cracks…that’s where our unheard voices are being suppressed unfairly….?
