    Commentary: I’m Indian Muslim And That Defines My Trail Of Thoughts

    The upcoming PE has definitely once again throw the spotlight on Malays and Indian Muslims. In Singapore context, Indian Muslims have always been the sandwich race. We are sandwich between our Malay living lifestyle and our identity. Mendaki double standard is not helping in this matter.

    Malay and Muslim are used interchangeably in Singapore context as and when they feel the need for it (Senang cakap ikut suka hati mak bapak dorang lah).

    I give you a true point in case. Most of my Indian Muslims relatives contributed to both Mendaki and Sinda. When their children applied for the bursary or financial assistance, the favorite quote would be ‘sorry, Mendaki are for Malays. You can try applying to Sinda.”

    But lo and behold, when any of this INDIAN MUSLIMS did well, suddenly they will be invited to Mendaki for whatever not ceremony to pose for pictures with you know who and claim their success under MENDAKI MALAY / MUSLIM banner. And Sinda never does that before. It’s very confusing tau for us! it leads to our own IDENTITY CRISIS…..Sad right?…..

    This has always been our bone of contentions and I don’t think much has changed since.

    As a Mendaki spokesman had declared and confirmed this biases “Malay-Muslim self-help group Yayasan Mendaki has a set of criteria for its financial assistance schemes for students administered on behalf of the Government. Among other things, the recipients “must be of Malay descent” as stated in their identity cards. It spells out a list of what it considers to be “Malay descent”, and this includes 22 ethnicities including Acehnese, Javanese, Boyanese, Sumatran, Sundanese, and Bugis. Students with “double-barrelled” race are eligible if the first race is listed on the identity cards as Malay, said a Mendaki spokesman. For example, a student who is Malay-Arab would qualify for the schemes but an Arab-Malay student would not, he added.”

    CONFUSED HOR!

    P.S – My daughter did not get any financial help from Mendaki after finding out all the stringent rules attached to it. It works out to something like ‘I scratch your back and you have to scratch more of mine’. However, when she did well, she was invited to attend the Mendaki ceremony, giving the impression that she owes her success to Mendaki.

    WHATEVER!

  • [Malaysia] Bersyukurlah Jadi Melayu, Bangsa Dunia Yang Hebat

    [Malaysia] Bersyukurlah Jadi Melayu, Bangsa Dunia Yang Hebat

  • Should Food Delivery Services Here Have 2 Delivery Boxes For Halal And Non-Halal?

    Should Food Delivery Services Here Have 2 Delivery Boxes For Halal And Non-Halal?

    China’s Meituan stirred up controversy online after announcing that it will begin offering separate logistics infrastructure for halal food, causing Chinese netizens to condemn the company for “discriminating against” non-Muslims while also worrying about the “rise of Islam” in their country.

    Meituan couriers on bikes will now be armed with two delivery boxes, a normal one for non-halal food and a smaller one for halal food. Netizens viewed the change as discriminatory and vowed that they will delete the app en masse.

    In Singapore, food delivery services like Ubereats, Foodpanda, Deliveroo and several others are the bike couriers we see day to day on the streets delivering food both (halal and non-halal) to their destinations.

    These couriers store their delivery items inside a bag with their own company name imprinted on it. They do not carry two delivery boxes like what Meituan’s is trying to implement.

    However is not clear though if the bag has compartments inside to separate non-halal from halal food. Or are there dedicated riders to deliver only halal food and only non-halal food? If not, should Singapore follow what Meituan is doing to safeguard the sanctity of minority food?

    We also know that there are Malay riders who do not mind sending orders or food that are not halal. Can we hope for a change to this in the near future?

  • Flashback 1988: Definition of Malay Was Debated In Parliament (In The Context Of GRC System)

    Flashback 1988: Definition of Malay Was Debated In Parliament (In The Context Of GRC System)

    The issue on the definition of Malay was debated earlier in Parliament (in the context of the GRC system) back in 1988.

    It was an exchange involving Goh Chok Tong, Chiam See Tong and Ahmad Mattar.

    Part of the excerpt read;

    Can a Maori be a “Malay” Member of Parliament? Will the day come when five Europeans enter the Singapore Parliament as “Malay” MPs?

    Opposition MP Chiam See Tong posed these questions to his Select Committee colleagues as he questioned the revised definition of a Malay in the Team MP legislation.

    First Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong’s reply: Anyone who feels he is part of the Malay community and is accepted by the community as such can be a “Malay” MP.

    “If indeed five Europeans are accepted by members of the Malay community to be members of the community, they will be so put up by the community as candidates, because they are regarded as members of that community,” he said.

    The same goes for even a Maori, said Mr Goh.

    In another part;

    If the day came when five or seven such Europeans entered Parliament as “Malay” MPs, he asked, where was the minority representation the GRCs were meant to ensure?

    Dr Mattar told him that Malay candidates must first be cleared by the Malay Community Committee.

    “If the Malay community thinks that it is best represented by the Europeans, so be it. I do not think it will happen,” he said.

    Mr Sidek said that while the revised definition embraced other races, the real objectives was to avoid complaints from groups like the Banjaris or Achenese, who were not included in the original definition.

    Also;

    Mr Goh pointed out that the purpose of the GRCs was to ensure Malay representation in Parliament and the definition was crafted to include anyone who believes he is part of the community and is accepted as such by it.

    He said that if Europeans are accepted as members of the Malay community, they are free to stand as “Malay” candidates.

    “If the Malay community is happy, who are we to say they should not represent them? Because they are regarded by the Malay community as members of the Malay community.”
