  • Khaw Boon Wan: Plans For Buddhist Temple and Commercial Columbarium In Sengkang Will Not Proceed

Khaw Boon Wan: Plans For Buddhist Temple and Commercial Columbarium In Sengkang Will Not Proceed

Singapore’s minister for national development Khaw Boon Wan on Thursday said he would not allow plans for a Buddhist temple and commercial columbarium in Sengkang to proceed. He also said his ministry would “find a way” to deliver the Chinese temple the land was originally earmarked for.

Responding to multiple questions filed by three different MPs, he said in Parliament that it was the first time the government allowed a secular company to win the tender for the plot of land in Sengkang’s Fernvale estate, located near to two upcoming Build-To-Order HDB projects as well as an executive condominium.

The case of the Sengkang Chinese Temple plot raised the ire of Singaporeans who had purchased flats under the project — the company, Eternal Pure Land, opted to build a Buddhist temple with a commercial columbarium on the area, plans that would-be residents said they did not know about before they opted to purchase homes there.

Several requested refunds, expressing concern that the presence of the columbarium would impact the resale value of their flats, while others said they did not want to expose their children to “these things so young in their lives”, according to previous local media reports on the issue. Some 400 disgruntled people also attended a dialogue earlier this month with MP Lam Pin Min, who oversees the area.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Khaw said the tender process, in place since 1991, has always allowed both religious organisations and secular companies to participate, because religious organisations often form companies to engage in such tenders on their behalf.

“The assumption is that only companies affiliated to religious organisations would participate in such tenders,” he said.

The minister explained that the tender was awarded to Eternal Pure Land with the impression that the company was a vehicle for a religious organisation to build a Chinese temple, noting that a commercial columbarium is different from the columbarium services provided by religious organisations alongside temples.

“We now understand that [Eternal Pure Land] is actually a private company without any religious affiliation. From what we know, the plan of the company is to run a commercial columbarium on the site,” he said. “This is not in line with our plan for the Places of Worship site.”

The company had placed a winning bid of $5.2 million for the plot of land in July last year.

“Having reached such a situation, I’ll find a way to try to unwind this,” he continued. “The key point is for that Sengkang site we want the Chinese temple and we will deliver that, for that Sengkang site we do not want a commercial columbarium and we won’t have one.”

Khaw said his ministry is currently reviewing the existing land tender process for places of worship, working with religious groups to tighten eligibility requirements for tenderers.

“The Sengkang temple case has highlighted the necessity for such a review. I will provide more information when the review is completed,” he said.

  • Fernvale Lea Residents Request Refunds From HDB In Light Of Plans For Columbarium

Fernvale Lea Residents Request Refunds From HDB In Light Of Plans For Columbarium

Upset about an upcoming columbarium close to their future flats, some would-be residents of Fernvale Lea have asked the Housing Board for a refund.

Their request came even after Dr Lam Pin Min, MP for Sengkang West, held a dialogue with residents on Sunday and said that there would not be a crematorium or funeral parlour services at the Chinese temple where the columbarium would be housed.

Some residents stood in line to leave their contact details with the HDB after a three-hour dialogue with Dr Lam and representatives from Life Corp, the company developing the temple.

Residents at the dialogue said the HDB should have been more upfront about the Chinese temple housing a columbarium.

News of the columbarium, which is expected to be completed by 2016, had surprised many residents when it was reported last week. An online petition started on Tuesday to stop the development of the columbarium had garnered more than 800 signatures.

Speaking on the sidelines of the dialogue, Dr Lam said the authorities had been upfront, noting that it was indicated in the Fernvale Lea brochure for the new flats that the temple may include a columbarium allowed under the guidelines of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). “There is really nothing to hide,” he added.

Some residents had also asked why the Chinese temple is being developed by a private company.

Dr Lam said URA guidelines did not restrict the type of company that can develop a religious institution and he understood from the URA that it has been done before.

  • 18,000 Commuters Affected in 9-Hour Train Breakdown

18,000 Commuters Affected in 9-Hour Train Breakdown

    nel

SINGAPORE — Train services between Punggol and Sengkang MRT stations were disrupted for nine hours yesterday, in what was the longest breakdown on the North-East Line (NEL) since the record 12-hour delay in March 2012.

Yesterday’s disruption, which took place between 6am and 3pm, affected about 18,000 commuters. Initially, train services between three stations — Punggol, Sengkang and Buangkok — were hit and scores of commuters fanned out of the stations to bus stops and taxi stands. At about 8am, trains were turned around at Sengkang station, enabling service between Sengkang and HarbourFront stations.

NEL operator SBS Transit said the disruption was due to a power fault caused by a dislocation of the cantilever arms holding the contact wire of the power supply line at the tunnels near Punggol station. As a result, power supply to the trains was cut off. This is the first time the arms have dislodged, added SBS Transit.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it would carry out an investigation into the cause and the operator’s management of the incident, which was criticised by some commuters, in contrast to the praise SBS Transit received from commuters and Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew in the aftermath of the March 2012 disruption.

Student Chia Yao Le, 19, was among the commuters who were affected yesterday. She ended up half an hour late for school. She said the service staff deployed did not know where the queues for the free shuttle buses started. “It was confusing with so many people.”

Another commuter, Mr Joke Jong, said he noticed only one sign that was placed outside the train station. The 31-year-old Indonesian said: “There were a lot of people queuing for the shuttle buses … people were asking around for where to start queuing.”

Mr Mohammad Faruq Senin, 23, and Mr Matthew Yeo, 21, both Nanyang Technological University undergraduates, were stuck at Sengkang station for a while before they gave up waiting to board a free shuttle bus. “The queues were very long,” said Mr Yeo.

Addressing commuters’ feedback, SBS Transit’s senior vice-president of corporate communications, Ms Tammy Tan, said when the disruption happened, the operator immediately instructed all its Goodwill Ambassadors to head to affected stations. “It, however, took some time for all our Goodwill Ambassadors to reach the various stations and this might have affected information dissemination on the ground. We deeply apologise to all commuters affected,” she said.

SBS Transit said more than 70 Goodwill Ambassadors and traffic inspectors were sent to assist commuters, while more than 20 engineers were involved in the recovery work.

Checks were also conducted to ensure safe operations before full service resumed, it added. The operator said it is conducting detailed investigations to determine the cause of the fault.

Almost 40 shuttle buses were in operation during the disruption, while commuters were able to board public bus services for free at designated bus stops near the affected stations.

This is the fourth major disruption on the NEL this year. In April, train services towards Punggol station were delayed for almost an hour due to a power fault, while on March 29, a stalled train at Clarke Quay station disrupted services by 40 minutes. Eight days before that, a power fault delayed services for more than half an hour along nine stations.

    Video taken by  Ewan Sarwani

Earlier today 16/5/2014 @ 1310hrs while going for my friday prayers at sengkang mosque, saw an enforcement officer issuing summons to vehicles parking along the road at sengkang almawaddah mosque.

While advising him to give chance and be tolerant for abt 30mins as those drivers are attending to fridays prayers.

The officer told that he cant as its an offense to park along a zigzag white line but i told him that he too park his motorcycle along the zigzag white line while summoning the vehicle. He replied that he is special and able to park to carry out his duties.. i told him why can’t he parked at nearby carpark and walk to the spot to carry out his duties… y a double standard??

Some confrontations happened between him and some other muslim passerbys…

I wont comment much as not to fuse any racial misunderstandings… but how i wish racial and religions tolerance is at its very best… haiz!!!!

    8. Terus-menerus update pengetahun ibubapa mengenai bidang seksualiti insani.

    Dasar Asas Perlaksanaan Dalam keluarga:
    1. Lebih AWAL lebih BAIK
    2. Lebih KERAP lebih ELOK
    3. Rebut TEACHABLE MOMENTS
    4. Jadikan diri sendiri (ibubapa) sebagai ASKABLE
    5. Lebih banyak BERDIALOG dari berleter
    6. Lebih banyak MENDENGAR dari bersyarah
    7. Lebih banyak BERINTERAKSI dari menyendiri

Semoga Allah memberi kita kekuatan untuk menangani cabaran ini demi menjaga kemaslahatan masadepan anak-anak kita semua.

    Allahul Musta’aan
